“Mhm, indeed! It would be improper to dress a lovely maiden in a short, indecent maid outfit that reveals ulterior motives. The true purpose of work attire should be faithful to its original intent, modest, and elegant with a long hem…!”

“Um… If it pleases you, then I’m glad!”

“Yes, I’m greatly pleased!”

With a fervor that seemed on the verge of tears of joy, he… Master Nephilim, continued to adjust his position and angles around me, clicking away with the shutter of his magical contraption, a camera he claimed to have crafted himself.

While smiling wryly at him, I brewed tea with the teapot I brought from the kitchen. During various instructions given during my stay at Rolandia Castle, I had been thoroughly trained in the art of tea making, so I had a little confidence in these matters.

It seemed that such gestures were greatly appreciated, as when I served tea to Kirsche-san, who was dressed in a ladylike Lolita costume, there were moments when he took several shots of us together without much change in pose.

Seeing him so delighted, I couldn’t help but recall the movements of the servants working in the castle, and I ended up providing services to enhance the photos.

…This is kind of fun.

Receiving such joy with just my actions made me feel like I had become a model, and it was starting to become a bit addictive.

Thus, we played at having a tea party, I tied Kirsche-san’s hair while she was dressed as a lady, and we mimicked various master-servant roles… eventually, we got a bit carried away, embracing each other for a slightly sensual pose… and the photoshoot came to an end.

After the shoot, Master Nephilim looked up at the sky, covering his large single eye with his hand…

“…Oooooooooooohhhhhhhh…”

…and let out a weird groan. It seems he was overwhelmed with emotion, but now, his request should probably be fulfilled.

“Phew… That was embarrassing…”

“But you seemed to enjoy yourself towards the end, didn’t you?”

“W-Well… maybe… a little…”

Kirsche-san smiled mischievously at me, seemingly quite pleased with herself.

Looking back now, what were we even doing…?!

The mischief we got caught up in during the shoot finally came back to haunt me when things calmed down.

Learning from this bitter lesson, our cooperation with Master Nephilim’s hobbies came to an end… for that day.

Master Nephilim poured tea into a special cup made for him… I could barely hold it with both hands, but when he held it, it looked the size of a cream container for coffee… and the atmosphere turned serious once again as we began discussing matters.

“…You want my permission to make that armor? Very well, go ahead.”

“You would, Master?!”

The first to speak up was Ouka-san.

Her request to make Nii-sama’s armor was easily granted.

“Yes. Until now, you only had the skills but lacked the drive. I didn’t want to entrust my secrets to someone as frivolous as you…”

With that said, he swirled the contents of the cup before looking straight at Ouka-san… and his stern expression softened slightly.

“It seems like you’ve finally got your head on straight, so I’ll give you a passing grade. I’ll lend you the materials, by all means, give it a try.”

“T-Thank you very much!”

Standing up abruptly, Ouka-san bowed her head.

With one problem resolved smoothly, the atmosphere around us relaxed.

“…There’s something I’ve been wanting to ask for a long time.”

“Hmm?”

Next, it was Nii-sama’s turn to raise his hand.

“I’m aware that what I’m about to say sounds absurd. But… do you undoubtedly remember forging the sword Ars Ray for Reiji?”

“Of course. The design of that sword is my original. No one else could forge it…”

“When did it happen, then?”

“…Huh?”

“We disappeared from this world seven years ago. And from what we’ve heard from others, before that, we had no connection to situations that would require weapons.”

…This was something that had bothered us several times before.

Our entire existence here is questionable. Originally, we shouldn’t even be in this world.

However, to the people of this world, a select few people like myself, Nii-sama and the currently absent Scar-san, were treated as if we’d always been a part of it.

Especially him, Master Nephilim… Although we had some interaction with him as an NPC in the game— as Nii-sama just mentioned, chronologically, we should have no connection with him in this world.

“So… when did we meet, then?”

“Hmm… Have I met you before… That’s… huh?”

Master Nephilim pondered over Nii-sama’s question… then quickly furrowed his brows while numerous question marks appeared over his head.

“Now that you mentioned it… it’s true that we shouldn’t even have met…?”

“…But you seemed to know about us from before.”

“Yes. I have memories of meeting you, being commissioned, and forging the sword. It’s strange, but… indeed, we never actually met. However, it’s a fact that we did meet. What does this mean?”

Even among the people we encountered, there were those who remembered our past. But Master Nephilim’s reaction was the first of its kind.

“…Sorry, I truly have no idea. But, some things start to make sense. Like why I was able to create something that shouldn’t have been possible…”

Saying so, he tapped the hilt of the “Ars Ray”, which was placed on the table, with his fingertip.

“This Ars Ray is powered by a Dragon Core, the highest quality material that can only be extracted from a True Dragon… If you hunt for something like that somewhere, the world would be in an uproar.”

The act of slaying a dragon is all but something out of a fairy tale in this world.

In fact, when Walter-san, the Mercenary King, brought to him a single Dragon Core, it caused quite a stir… Master Nephilim reminisced with a distant gaze.

“And yet, something like this exists right here, forged by my own hands, despite there being no stories of a True Dragon being hunted anywhere… This is purely a speculation on my part, but do you mind hearing me out?”

Everyone nodded at Master Nephilim’s words. Seeing this, he continued to speak.

“This world’s very history must have been rewritten somewhere.”

“No… surely not…”

Nii-sama was in total disbelief.

And I’m sure Ouka-san and Kirsche-san, who were probably wearing bewildered expressions like me, did the same.

“I know this sounds ridiculous to you, but bear with me. Although it seems to have been lost among humans, there’s a story that’s been passed down among long-lived species like us.”

Well, listen to this story as if it were just a story… With this preface, Master Nephilim began to speak.

“Before this world took its current form, it was a much broader world. This world was just one continent among many at the time.”

“A continent…?”

“Yes, and at that time, the country that ruled over the entire continent flourished with advanced magic and the use of a certain metal. It was said that civilization thrived by using it— it was hard yet flexible, capable of various processes, and depending on how it was processed, it could store light or manipulate gravity… There was even a characteristic where it could become a fantastic magical furnace or a magic tank. For us blacksmiths, it was a dream-like metal.”

So spoke Master Nephilim.

Certainly, it’s an unbelievable metal, but hearing this story, I couldn’t help but think…

…It’s quite similar. To a certain metal that exists only in the legends of the world we came from.

“Is it a real thing?”

“It exists. I have a little bit of it in my possession.”

With a proud expression, Master Nephilim puffed out his chest, but soon returned to a serious expression and began speaking again.

“…But that country greedily developed civilization and eventually opened the door to the world’s forbidden truth. It’s a place where the memories of all organisms gather, where the world’s information is recorded, and the fate that leads to the past and future is compiled, leading to omniscience…”

“…The collective unconscious, Akashic Records?”

“It’s known as Akasha among us giants. That civilization finally came into contact with it and became able to control it.”

“Something like that… exists?”

Nii-sama remained skeptical.

If that were possible, one would perhaps gain the ability to distort the world as one pleases. It’s unimaginable how much compensation would be needed to correct that distortion.

But then again…

“The magic we use even now is similar. In terms of rewriting the world and manipulating it to your liking.”

“That’s… one way to put it, yes. But the scale seems completely different…”

Certainly, if we look at things in another way, we were casually doing similar things all the time. If such technology were perfected, perhaps it wouldn’t be impossible.

“You can get anything you want. Death no longer becomes something to fear, and there’s no need to work tirelessly anymore. And so, those who laid hands on omniscience and omnipotence quickly reached their zenith…”

“But, such things, in human hands…”

“Well, of course. Such things are beyond the control of humans, let alone those living in the material world. The civilization that happily touched taboos enjoyed prosperity for a while, then suddenly perished overnight. At the same time, this world was cut off from the original world, and the survivors were left to live burdened with sin… and that’s the end of it.”

…In our world, as seen in stories like the Tower of Babel, it’s not uncommon for highly developed civilizations to suddenly disappear.

However, this… this story, although it has a different perspective from what I know, I’d heard of it before.

“That’s about all I know. We tend to lean toward knowledge in our own areas of interest, and I’m just a simple swordsmith.”

“No, it was a very interesting story. Thank you.”

“Besides… if you ask that old man who seems to have been around since forever, perhaps he’d know more about it.”

I think Blanche-sama said something similar when I consulted her about our future direction…

“Is he the Elder Dragon living in the north…?”

“Oh, yes, that’s the one. Well, if you’re interested, why not pay him a visit?”

Master Nephilim nodded as if he understood my intention.

…Yes, once this Great Martial Arts Festival’s over, our next destination should be the royal capital, and then to the Elder Dragon.

With that in mind, I began to plan our future course in my head.

Fortunately, we were currently traveling with His Majesty and the others. If all goes well, we should be able to hitch a ride back to the royal capital.

As I was making these calculations, Ouka-san spoke up next.

“Hey, Master. That metal used in that civilization, is it the super hard one that looks like copper we saw before?”

“…That’s right. But I won’t let you use that. It’s not something to be used lightly.”

“I know! I was just curious about it, that’s all.”

I also had something I wanted to say in response to those words.

Glancing to my side, I saw that Nii-sama was also furrowing his brows, and Kirsche-san, who seemed unfamiliar with such discussions, wore a puzzled expression.

A continent cut off from the world overnight.

A powerful metal used in the civilization that flourished there.

This bears a striking resemblance to the legend of a certain continent in our world…

Leaving Ouka-san and the others in the workshop, Master Nephilim led us to another room for negotiations.

Sitting directly on the floor in a cross-legged position, the Cyclops blacksmith was the first to speak.

“So, the fact that you’ve come all the way to visit an unusual blacksmith like myself must mean you need weapons, right?”

“Yes. We’ve come to have my sword and Iris’ staff forged.”

Nii-sama replied in response to Master Nephilim’s inquiry.

Having lost our weapons except for Reiji-san, who still possessed the “Arventia”, during the battle with Death Serpent, our primary purpose in visiting him this time… was to replace those lost weapons by forging something superior.

Master Nephilim’s expression turned slightly grim when he spoke again.

“I see… If it’s a sword, I can pick a few out for you, but as for the staff… magical devices are outside my expertise, so it might be makeshift.”

“Yes, if you could, please.”

“And don’t say ‘makeshift’ like that. Master Nephilim, your skill in crafting magical devices is splendid. We trust in your abilities, so please.”

As I bowed and spoke, he scratched his cheek in embarrassment, but it seemed he wasn’t entirely displeased.

And what I said wasn’t a lie. Despite not being his specialty, his skills in crafting magical devices were honed for weapon-making.

Regarding magical devices taking the form of weapons, there was no one else comparable. We knew this well, especially considering his creation of the “Ars Rey”, currently in Reiji-san’s possession, albeit sealed.

…Yes, that cursed sword was also one of our main objectives.

“There’s one more thing… no, two.”

Said Nii-sama as he brought out from his bag a pitch-black sword and a white greatsword, both sheathed… Those were the “Ars Ray” and “Arventia” we borrowed from Reiji-san.

“I… recognize this black one. This is one of my creations.”

“Yes… Circumstances have changed, and we no longer possess the same power as when this sword was forged. Therefore, we ask for your pardon in altering your masterpiece. We wish for you to install a limiter to reduce the burden when using it.”

Nii-sama knelt on the ground and bowed his head, and I followed suit.

To ask a master craftsman of the highest order to detune their best work was incredibly disrespectful.

We endured the silence that followed, prepared for the worst, with bated breath, for two, three seconds…

… And then, finally, Master Nephilim’s expression, showing signs of resignation, broke into a wry smile.

“Well… I suppose I may have gone a bit overboard with this series. But… is it really necessary to go through all this trouble to use it?”

While the performance of the “Arventia” with unknown capabilities in its complete state might be excused… as for the “Ars Ray”, a weapon that could even slay dragons, its power is completely overkill for daily use, and the user has to pray a high price to even use it.

And yet…

“Yes… We’re certain that it will be necessary sooner or later.”

In response to Master Nephilim’s skeptical words, I firmly replied.

It was both a premonition and my own conviction.

“I see… It seems that you have your own circumstances. And, what about the white sword here?”

“This one, we simply wish to have it repaired. It was damaged when we obtained it.”

Nii-sama’s gaze shifted toward me as he said that.

With a nod, I withdrew the white sword from its sheath and placed it on the table.

“This… This sword is…?!”

The moment “Arventia” was drawn from its sheath, Master Nephilim lunged towards it, examining its blade with his large single eye.

“…It must be the ‘Save the Queen’ spoken of in legends! If you can draw this sword, Miss Iris, then you’re…!”

I simply nodded in response to his stunned muttering.

It was inappropriate to hide things from him when making a request, so I concentrated on my back, removing the parka I was wearing to reveal the wings.

I had become quite accustomed to it, and at my wish, light emanated from my back, forming wings and illuminating the dim cave interior dazzlingly.

… Lately, I felt like the light from these wings has become slightly whiter.

“Oh… This is, without a doubt, the light of the legendary Lightwing race… To think that I would see this in my lifetime.”

Gazing excitedly at my figure… he soon softened his expression with a hint of pity and spoke.

“I now somewhat understand your situation… but I hope you understand that you can’t hide your true nature forever.”

“…Yes.”

In fact, although no solid evidence has been circulated yet, rumors about the Lightwing race had been gradually becoming more and more common among the rumors in town recently.

Even if a gag order was placed on the soldiers who actually witnessed my true identity, it would be difficult to completely shut out the information. The fact that we’d solved multiple crises still remained, so even if nobody knew what actually went down, speculations of this kind would naturally abound.

“In that case, I’ll keep it a secret. But… be prepared to choose whether to conceal your true nature or follow your beliefs when you get exposed.”

That, I understood perfectly.

The reason we’d been able to keep it hidden so far is due to luck and fortune. But that may not always be the case in the future.

“…There’s still another thing I don’t understand. Why would you go through the trouble of repairing this sword and adding a limiter to Ars Ray for proper use…? Who do you intend to fight against?”

“We…”

…I explained our past battles to him.

The “Wound of the World” that opened.

The monsters behaving completely differently from their natural ecology.

And above all, the incident with Death Serpent.

As I progressed with the story, a serious expression deepened on his face.

“That’s… a lot of hardships you have to overcome. If you need my help, then I’ll gladly lend it to you.”

“…Are you sure?”

“Yes. I sense that this world is about to enter a turbulent period. Even though we craftsmen are a stubborn lot, we aren’t indifferent to the fate of the world. And…”

Pausing his words for a moment, he looked at us with kindness and concern before continuing.

“If a Lightwing person asks for my help in protecting this world, there’s no way I could refuse. I’m willing to offer as much help as I can.”

“S-So, about this matter…”

“Consider it done. I, Nephilim, shall give my all to fulfill your request. There are a few materials lacking, so I’ll need to procure them…”

With a gentle smile that belied his massive physique and stern face, Master Nephilim nodded emphatically. Hearing his response, we, who had come here with a specific purpose, breathed a sigh of relief.

“…And, well, if it’s not too much trouble…”

…Here it comes.

Though I had mentally prepared for it since we arrived, sensing the shift in tone, my shoulders tensed involuntarily.

“I didn’t mean to ask much of you… but would you mind fulfilling a small request of mine…?”

His demeanor as he spoke… was a far cry from the dignity he had displayed before. He looked rather soft and relaxed, almost affectionate.

“*sighs*… That person’s still the same as ever.”

Letting out a deep sigh, the strap of my one-piece dress slipped off, making a dry sound as it hit the floor.

As I stood there in my underwear, the cool air of the cave brushed against my exposed skin, causing me to shiver involuntarily.

I was in the position to ask him a favor, and given that he was very willing to accept our conditions, granting his wish wouldn’t be difficult in comparison. It’s not that I’m reluctant, but…

…We were currently in… an astonishing sight, to say the least—a fancy dress room overflowing with countless garments, especially dresses for young girls and teens. Despite the disbelief, this room is indeed a part of Master Nephilim’s workshop.

When I first accepted his request in the game, it was a shock to see such a hobby from someone with the stern title of “Swordsmith Giant”. Now, whether I should feel relieved that he hasn’t changed, or if I should be disappointed all over again… I’m not entirely sure.

“Um, Princess… Even if it’s summer, it’s quite cool in here. You should change quickly, or you’ll catch a cold, you know?”

“I know, but…”

“It’s alright. He won’t do anything inappropriate.”

Reluctantly, I sat on the provided chair and began putting on the cute, frilled garter belt and stockings that were paired with the dress I chose.

…That Master Nephilim has a strong liking for cute things, or if I may be blunt, he’s a raging lolicon.

However, for him, a cute girl is something to admire from a distance. His “Yes Lolita No Touch” belief is that of a true gentleman.

If what Kirsche-san said was true, it seemed to be the same in this world.

But still, even though I was fine with it during events in the game, now that it’s real life, I can’t help but feel embarrassed.

Yet, regardless of his profession, his passion and dedication to creating a vast array of girl’s clothing, solely out of personal preference, despite its lack of relation to his job, is truly remarkable.

…Milly-san must never come here, at all costs.

With a firm conviction and the certainty that it won’t lead to anything good, I swore it in my heart.

“…Princess, do you happen to know Onee-chan’s master from the Worldgate Online days?”

“Yes, well, he was an important figure in the quest to make the weapon for Reiji-san… I mean, my other companion who’s not here today.”

“Is this Reiji person the other ‘Knight’ protecting the ‘Northern Princess’? I’d heard about him too.”

“…I’d rather you not refer to us with those nicknames again, it’s embarrassing…”

By association with me, Reiji-san was given the nickname “Carnelian Knight”, and that name was a source of embarrassment for both him and me.

Seeing me flustered all over, Kirsche-san happily giggled.

“…Kirsche-san, I didn’t expect you to enjoy this.”

“Is that so? Hmm… maybe.”

She smiled wryly as she put on the frilly petticoat and skirt without much resistance.

…Maybe I should have just looked the other way when she decided to tag along. After all, the request was directed at me alone, so her being here was voluntary.

“If my dreams come true, I might wear clothes like this in the future, so it’s like practice and doesn’t bother me much.”

“…I heard you wanted to become a singer.”

She gives off a calm and reserved impression, so honestly, it’s a surprising dream.

But according to Ouka-san, it seems to be a serious goal rather than just a vague wish.

“Yes… I was sent to a training school, and recently… over the past few months, my singing had improved so much that the trainer was surprised. It was almost coming together, you know?”

Kirsche-san said with a shy smile.

But soon, her expression darkened.

“And then… this happened. Onee-chan seems to always feel guilty about it… but she hasn’t done anything wrong. It’s not her fault that we were sent to this world.”

Ouka-san seemed unable to wield her weapon, perhaps for this very reason.

An awkward silence then filled the room.

But still… I absentmindedly touched my chest and glanced at Kirsche-san, who was changing in front of me.

Why do all the women I meet have such great figures?!

I could barely feel the soft sensation of a modest bulge I can easily cover with one hand.

I stared at a certain part of Kirsche-san’s body, now exposed without reservation—something much more abundant that her petite figure would suggest, beautifully adorned in cute sky-blue underwear, with a surge of negative emotions rising from the depths of my heart.

Lenny-san occasionally checked the sizes and told me that they’re gradually growing… but comparing it to my mother’s figure in my memory, it seems suspicious.

This body was originally an avatar that Ayame created, whose model was based on the most beautiful woman in her memory… that being our mother.

In fact, looking at myself in the mirror, I can see the remnants of my mother’s appearance, and she was a very slender and charming woman, far from looking like the mother of two children.

Considering that this body has inherited those genes, I can’t expect much.

I tried finding hopes in my other mother, whom I’d vaguely seen in my dreams… Nope, there’s no hope there either.

Come to think of it, the books I’d accidentally looked at in the drawer under the bed in Reiji-san’s room… were mostly about “large” women, and my mood sank even lower.

…Is bigger better after all?

“…Um, Princess, why do you get so depressed when looking at me?”

“I-It’s nothing! Please don’t mind it!”

“You shouldn’t stay in your underwear for too long, you know? Please get changed quickly.”

“Yes, you’re right… Ahaha…”

I laughed to hide my true feelings from Kirsche-san, who was looking at me with dread for some reason, and picked up the clothes I’d selected from the costumes lined up in advance.

I was told to pick any costume, so without hesitation I chose the least revealing one possible… an old-fashioned long-skirt maid outfit consisting of a black dress and a clean white apron.

While it’s still embarrassing because it feels like cosplay, at least it’s bearable because of the minimal exposure.

The lined up costumes had literally everything ranging from the tame one like what I’m wearing now, to borderline criminal stuff… I’m going to pretend that the other category didn’t exist.

I’d sooner die than wearing one of those in real life in this body.

By the way, Kirsche-san chose a delicate Lolita fashion adorned with intricate frills, like that of a noble lady.

“Because, you know, even if it’s just roleplaying… isn’t the opportunity to have a real princess take care of me quite precious?”

“…Um, I still identify as a commoner, so it may not be as precious as you think…”

I responded with a wry smile to her cheerful remark.

…At first, I thought she was just a delicate and fragile girl, but she’s actually quite a good-natured person, I couldn’t help but think.

The dishes were brought to the table where everyone gathered: a large flat pan of paella, marlin-like fish in meunière sauce, generously topped with onions and tomatoes, and a large bowl of Caesar salad.

With vibrant colors and the delightful aroma of olive oil and garlic filling the room, everyone’s hunger made itself apparent.

“Please help yourselves… There’s plenty for seconds, so don’t hold back, okay?”

Saying so, Kirsche-san diligently served the paella to everyone.

As plates were distributed, we all said, “Thank you for the meal” and eagerly scooped up the rice with shrimp and other ingredients into our mouths.

…The seafood, properly prepared, lacks any fishy smell and offers a delightful texture and rich flavor.

The perfectly cooked rice absorbs the flavors of the seafood and vegetables, creating a harmonious blend of tastes with each bite…

“…This is so good!”

“R-Really?”

“Yes, I’d love to have the recipe, please.”

Nii-sama also praised the dish highly.

When I asked her for the recipe, Kirsche-san turned bright red and hurriedly entered her room to fetch some papers for notes.

Seeing this, Nii-sama whispered to me.

“Kirsche-san seems to be in a good mood, doesn’t she?”

“Hehe, probably because your and Ouka-san’s conversation earlier was quite loud.”

“Huh? Oh, you heard that?”

I glanced at Ouka-san sitting a bit away, silently eating her portion of paella. However, her flustered voice from the workshop a while ago…

“My sister’s cooking is delicious.”

The moment Kirsche-san heard that, her face lit up with joy.

If she had a tail, I’d imagine it wagging vigorously.

“…If only they could be a little more honest around each other.”

“I agree… but that’s something they must have to work out between themselves.”

Nii-sama and I sighed inwardly.

The meal progressed smoothly, and after all the dishes on the table had been emptied into our stomachs, we were led to a rocky hill behind Ouka-san’s workshop.

Despite its remote location, a well-trodden path led us to a gaping hole in the mountainside.

“Is this… a cave?”

“It used to be a large mineshaft that got abandoned after people dug out all the ores. Master expanded it and made it his home.”

Ouka-san chuckled at the absurdity of that idea.

However, the cave was reinforced with stone and illuminated with magical lights in places. It’s well-ventilated, and the interior, mostly shielded from the sun, is cool and comfortable.

Amidst this, a thin brass plate hung on the outer wall caught our eyes.

“What does it say…’Nephilim’s Forge’?”

It was a sign that one would hang above a shop.

Moreover, the sign was intricately crafted, indicating the high skill of the maker… although it seemed neglected, covered in dust.

“Oh, that. According to Master, he made it as something to kill time, but in my opinion, it’s pointless to put up a sign in a place nobody passes by.”

“To kill time…”

“Well, his sense of time is different.”

Ouka-san shrugged.

After all, Cyclops is a race of giants that can live for hundreds or thousands of years. To him, such a meticulously crafted sign might just be a mere hobby.

While thinking about that, we advanced through the cave for a while, eventually reaching a spacious area.

Not only is the space vast, but everything inside is enormous. From the furnace and anvil to the shelves and tools, everything seems oversized, giving us the illusion of being miniature.

However, what’s particularly strange is the counter, seemingly for humans, placed right near the entrance.

“Ah… That’s where I help him with the shopkeeping.”

“Not like we get many customers, though. If they’re not to my master’s liking, he’ll turn them away immediately.”

“I see…”

“Is your master still not back? I don’t see him around…”

“No, he should be here. Probably… in the supply room. This way.”

Following Ouka-san’s lead, we passed through a small door, seemingly for humans, located at the bottom right of one of the huge doors connected to the workshop. And there…

“Wow…”

“Are all of those… metals?”

On shelves towering high, over ten meters tall each, were neatly arranged ingots of metal.

Not just iron, but various metals shone, some even emanating strong magical power despite being mere ingots.

“Iron, gold, silver, copper, even mithril. He said he has almost every metal available nowadays.”

“Heh…”

As I walked, I noticed a metal with intricate ripple patterns… Looks like a relic from the ancient times… I thought as I glanced at it sideways.

…Just this alone must be a tremendous fortune.

“And then there’s this metal that looks like copper, but it feels like it has an overwhelming magical power inside… He let me touch it for a bit, but no matter how much I scratched, hit, or gnawed on it, it wouldn’t even scratch.”

“Copper…?”

“No, Master said it’s something else, but he didn’t tell me. He took it away right away and stashed it in a place I can’t reach.”

Maybe it’s because you tried to gnaw on it, I thought as another question arose in my mind.

Similar to copper… contains magical power…

“Could it be… Oricha… Ack?!”

Just as I was about to voice my thoughts, I accidentally bumped into Ouka-san, who had suddenly stopped.

“…Y-You alright?!”

“I’m… fine…”

I reply to Kirsche-san, who looked worried as I held back the pain from hitting my nose.

…What was I about to say again?

The vague words dissipated, and I shook my head… It felt important, but I just couldn’t remember. Feeling a bit frustrated, I switched my focus to something else.

“Ah, sorry about that. But hey, Master is over there.”

Ouka-san pointed toward a seated colossal figure, probably ten meters tall if standing. He didn’t turn to us, seemingly absorbed in doing something.

“Ouka-san, what’s he doing?”

“Hmm… Probably refining the ores he collected today.”

“Refining? Without a furnace?”

“You’ll see.”

Between his hands raised at the chest area, there was a lump resembling a black ore.

In the next moment, it was suddenly engulfed in a black flame-like substance… Eventually, it melted down into a red liquid and flowed down to something resembling a sand pedestal placed at the feet.

“That’s the Black Flame, passed down as a secret only to the Cyclops race. With it, Master can manipulate any metal as he pleases.”

“…I’d heard about it in the texts, but this is the first time I’ve seen it for myself.”

“It’s kind of enviable, isn’t it? No matter how well we humans refine metals, we could never match his metallurgy… Well then!”

After making sure that her master had finished his current task, Ouka-san rushed off toward his back, and we hurriedly follow her.

“Master! Hey, M A S T E R !”

“Ah…?”

At the sound of Ouka-san’s voice, the colossal figure rose slowly and turned around.

Dark skin with lush white hair and a chin beard. A formidable visage that would make anyone unfamiliar cower in fear.

In the center of his face, the greatest characteristic of his race, the single eye, fixates on us.

And the moment he opened his mouth, a deep bass, as if thunder resonating in the depths of his abdomen, reverberated so strongly that it seemed to cause ripples in the air.

“What’s up, Ouka? I wonder why you’ve come to this hole even when the festival’s coming… And who might you folks be over there?”

“Ah, they’re customers who wish to see you, so I’ve brought them here…”

“N-Nice to see you…”

I gently pinched the hem of my skirt, bent my knees and bowed my head. Beside me, Nii-sama also bowed his head.

Master Nephilim, the person we were looking for, peered at us with suspicion.

After blinking his large, single eye several times, his stern and rugged face softened with apparent delight.

“Oh… Ohhhh… Are you, perchance… Miss Iris?!”

“Eh…? Long time no… see?”

“Mmm, it’s good to see you in good health. Welcome to my humble forge, young miss.”

With that somewhat overdramatic gesture of welcome, we smiled with a mixture of relief and curiosity.

The relief stemmed from the fact that, without needing Walter-san’s letter of introduction, he seemed willing to hear us out.

As for the curiosity… it seemed that, like some of the people we encountered in this world, Leonhardt-sama and his associates for example, he seemed to be already acquainted with us… I could only wonder why.

Iris

Since then, for a while, the four of us walked while engaging in casual conversations. It’s already midday, and the sun was quite high in the sky. We crossed the bridge leading to the adjacent island and…

“What should I do with these vegetables?”

“Well… we’re making a salad, so just wash and thinly slice them… we still have the dressing I made the other day, so that’s no worry.”

…Kirsche-san and I, in the kitchen of the sisters’ residence, were preparing lunch.

It began when we were discussing what to have for lunch, as it was going to be a long time until Ouka-san’s master returns.

“…If we still have things to discuss, why don’t you guys have lunch at my place and wait for Master while you’re at it?”

At Ouka-san’s suggestion, we were now at the workshop on the outskirts where she and Kirsche-san live.

As soon as Nii-sama and Ouka-san arrived, they immediately went into the workshop together.

Left alone in the living room, I offered to help Kirsche-san out of restlessness…

“Kirsche-san, you’re really skilled at this kind of thing, aren’t you?”

I’d already finished arranging the vegetables for the salad on a plate, and now I’m briskly coating slices of fish resembling marlin with potato starch while watching Kirsche-san work efficiently.

She was supposed to be deveining shrimp earlier, but now she’s cutting garlic, tomatoes, and other ingredients. The sound of her knife is rhythmical and smooth, and before I knew it, the preparations were complete.

“…That’s because I’ve been trained by my mother since I was a child… you too, Princess, you said you were just starting out, but your knifework is pretty good yourself.”

“N-No, I still have much to learn…”

Kirsche-san, for some reason, seemed embarrassed at my words.

I, too, felt a bit flustered when she praised me back.

“…You know, Princess, the cuisine around here is similar to the Mediterranean in our original world…”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. For starters, it uses lots of olive oil, tomatoes and garlic.”

The aroma of garlic wafted through the air as I poured rice into a flat pan, added chopped tomatoes and soup and let the heat simmer.

She continued her explanation as she placed the prepared shrimp and shellfish on top.

“This island has abundant sunlight and a dry climate, so I guess it’s actually similar to the Mediterranean in our world…? I haven’t actually been there, though.”

“I think so. The good thing about this is that we can also apply the recipes from our original world here, so food shouldn’t be a problem.”

While talking, she added the chopped tomatoes she’d left earlier into the onions she was frying in another pan, mixed in some seasonings, and, as if her work had come to a halt, she turned toward me.

“…This may be sudden, but are you going to be alright? It seems like Onee-chan’s master is quite picky about who he chooses to help…”

Kirsche-san looked at me with concern.

As is often the case with skilled craftsmen, the person we were going to meet takes his job really seriously, and it would be difficult for us to earn his service.

However, we couldn’t afford any chance. That’s why we requested a recommendation letter from Walter-san, our acquaintance.

“Yes, I got a letter of introduction from an acquaintance, so it should be alright—”

“I’ve been helping him with some minor tasks lately, but… it seems like it’s piling up now… you know?”

“…”

Her words left me speechless.

Instinctively, my hand, which was about to add the fish slices coated with flour into the hot frying pan, stopped.

I’d been trying not to think about it, but I don’t like where this is going!

“I think he’ll like you just fine Princess… I, um… would also appreciate it very much…”

Kirsche-san suddenly became delighted and smiled cheerfully… I could see “Thank goodness, finally I’ve found someone to share my embarrassment with” written all over her face.

“…I just remembered I have other things to do. Since our work here’s done, I’ll get Nii-sama and we’ll return to our lodging…”

I felt bad for her, but I turned on my heel and tried to leave the scene—only to have my shoulder grabbed as if my actions were anticipated.

Turning around hesitantly, I saw a completely stone-faced Kirsche-san, her usually sweet demeanor nowhere to be found. The strength in her grip was so intense that my shoulder, seemed to be screaming in protest.

“…Sorry, but I can’t let you get away.”

“………….Yes.”

With her intimidating words, I slumped my shoulders in resignation.

I should have seen this coming.

Why would he, who isn’t the type to take on disciples, become Ouka-san’s master?

Don’t tell me he just accepted Ouka-san without thinking after seeing her little sister, whose figure is similar to mine?!

Well, so much for expecting his lolicon tendencies to remain a weird quirk in the game…

Saul

“So, Ouka-san, what do you want to show me?”

“I haven’t gotten permission from Master to make it yet… Um, where did I put it…”

As she said this, Ouka-san rummaged through the back of the shelf.

After searching for a while, she eventually returned with an old-fashioned but sturdy, long narrow box in her hand.

She inserted a small key into the keyhole of the box, and after a click, the lid opened.

Inside the box was…

“…Blueprints?”

A paper rolled up like a scroll, about a meter long.

It seemed to be quite lengthy. When she slightly unrolled it after breaking the seal, it revealed what appeared to be blueprints of something.

“…It’s his so-called secret technique. Master said I could look at it for study.”

“Can I see it?”

“It’s fine, it’s not something you can memorize at a glance anyway.”

Ouka-san said with a slightly smug expression mixed in as she spread out the blueprints on the workbench.

…It’s understandable why she said memorizing it was impossible. The blueprint was densely packed with numerous annotations, depicting a single full-body armor.

“…What’s this?”

“How about it, surprised?”

“I’m more than surprised. This armor… is made of layers of multiple materials, and enchantments for mass preservation are used throughout… Is this a transform mechanism? This horrifyingly complex yet refined design…”

“Master calls it ‘Aegis-series Power Armor’. This design dated back to the old magical civilization, combining the metallurgy of the Cyclops with magical technologies developed during that period.”

Even her words didn’t quite register in my head.

However, I was staring at the blueprint, mesmerized—no, captivated.

“To think something like this existed…”

“Hehe, looks like it caught your interest. This is the best choice I can offer you for what you’re looking for. And…”

Ouka-san closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

When she opened her eyes again, they were looking straight into me.

“If I put everything I have to its limit, including my maxed-out armor crafting skill, I think this should make the strongest armor possible.”

“Maxed-out? So you’re…”

“Haha… Master is always scolding me, saying I can’t master the path… but, yeah.”

Said Ouka-san, who was scratching her head in embarrassment.

Having maxed out her crafting skills meant… despite the difference between clothing and armor… she was on the same level as Miriam in terms of being a production player.

She must have had considerable skills if a Cyclops took her on as disciple… No, she’s the best armor craftsman I could think of now.

To think we could meet such a talent by chance… I’m dumbfounded by the unexpected fortune.

“…So, what do you think?”

“Uh… Honestly, anything beyond this would require miraculous luck…”

The level-capped armor we used just before the reincarnation required enormous amounts of legendary class enemy materials, so there’s probably no way we’re going to replicate that in this world.

However, with this… It seems like a lot of rare metals will be needed, but it should be manageable.

And above all, the presence of a player like her was rare.

The Cyclops Nephilim we were looking for was only a swordsmith, and shouldn’t be as proficient when it comes to armor. It’s extremely unlikely that we’ll find another person like Ouka-san.

“…I’ll do my best to get Master’s permission for this. Your armor… will you let me make it?”

“That’s all I could wish for… Ouka-san, why are you doing so much for us? There’s no reason for you to treat us so well, right?”

“Well… I don’t know why myself. Um, let’s hurry and take measurements now while we can.”

I then let Ouka-san take my limbs, chest and other measurements with a tape measure and jot them down on a paper.

For a while, time passed in silence…

“…All done. You can move freely now.”

Ouka-san softly muttered as she rolled up her tape measure.

“…If I have to say, maybe it’s because I’m envious of you.”

“Envious…?”

“You guys are amazing. I… kind of admire you for that. If I can help you like this… maybe I can regain the confidence to stand up again… Besides…”

“Besides…?”

“I think you might throw away your life for that princess without a second thought… That’s why I can’t leave you alone. Ah, as an armor craftsman of course.”

Embarrassed by her own words, Ouka-san averted her eyes from me and meekly scratched her cheek.

I… before I knew it, I took her hand and spoke.

“…Thank you, Ouka-san. I definitely want to entrust you with this job… I’m really glad I met you.”

“Huh…”

When I told her my honest thoughts, Ouka-san stiffened for some reason…

“The heck you’re talking about, are you an idiot?!”

And she got mad.

Just as I was wondering what was going on, the sound of plates being set up reached my ears from the dining room. At the same time, the pleasant scent of garlic and olive oil hit my nose…it seemed like lunch was ready.

“Um… it seems that they’re ready over there, so let’s go! My sister’s cooking is delicious, it’d be a waste if it got cold!”

“Y-Yeah…”

“We’ll continue with the armor after lunch! Come on, just get a move on already!”

With that, she hustled me back to the dining area. Although her profile seemed to have reddened for some reason—there was a slight lift in her expression, a hint of regained vigor, I felt.

103.Similar, but not quite

Saul

The Cyclops blacksmith we were looking for seemed to own a workshop on the same island where these sisters resided.

Taking them up on their offer to guide us, Iris and I, along with Ouka-san and Kirsche-san, were now walking on the city outskirts, on the road leading to the bridge that crosses over to the adjacent island…

“So, Ouka-san, what did you want to talk about?”

When Ouka-san invited me to a private chat, we hastened our steps to stay a little ahead of the other two.

“Um… I just wanted some reference, really. Why do you guys want to become stronger? Ah, it’s not like I’m suspecting you or anything…”

“…Did something happen?”

“Well…”

She began speaking in a hushed tone, still aware of the slight foot traffic around us.

“I heard it from another former player in this city. Apparently, there’s a group going around forcefully recruiting influential players. They tried approaching him too, but he felt a suspicious vibe about them and refused, yet they kept pestering him since.”

“I see… I have a feeling something like this would happen sooner or later.”

Since we spent most of our time in this world in quite the remote region, where there weren’t many former players around, such rumors didn’t exist. But it’s to be expected that a so-called mutual aid organization would rear its head in this city, where people around the world gathered.

…Not like we’re one to talk, considering one of our goals was to gather as many allies as possible.

“…If you guys really are from that group, then I can’t introduce you to Master. I hope you understand.”

“Thank you for letting us know. We’ll be cautious, too.”

“Yeah, that’s better. Well, it’s just unthinkable for that princess of yours to be in league with those guys, isn’t she?”

“Haha, that’s true.”

We chuckled in agreement.

Indeed, with her status and popularity, gathering the former players would be easy.

However, she seemed to have no ambitions for that… in fact, she might not even be aware of such means.

“…Well, since you asked for it, there’s a reason we’re seeking strong equipment. I’ll keep it short since it’ll be a long story otherwise, but it’s related to recent events…”

With that preface, I briefly explained the events so far.

The “fight” with Death Serpent, so one-sided that it could hardly be called one.

Realizing our powerlessness there, and knowing that it wouldn’t suffice the next time we faced him.

“…So that really happened… and you guys started looking for stronger equipment because of it?”

“Yeah. Of course, we know we need to become stronger ourselves, not just rely on equipment…”

Just focusing on one aspect isn’t enough.

Especially if we want to protect Iris.

That Death Serpent aside… she’s the only remaining Lightwing in this world. Not to mention this whole Sacred Daughter business.

It’s now officially recognized that she has a blood relation to the Nordglacier royal family. With the right of succession to a sovereign state, it would be considerably difficult to lay hands on her.

However, it wouldn’t discount the possibility of somebody targeting her.

Like, for example,… an enemy that sees themselves beyond the scope of nations.

I have a feeling that to protect her from such people, we’ll have to explore every possible means.

“…You guys are amazing.”

“…Huh?”

“That Death Serpent… was incredibly dangerous, wasn’t he? And you guys didn’t even stand a chance against him.”

“That’s right… It was a feeling of having everything we’d built in this world over the past few months, all our confidence and arrogance, swept away at once.”

It was even worse for me than for Iris or Reiji-san, because I literally contributed nothing in that fight.

Being blown away like trash in the very beginning, and waking up afterward on a bed, with everything already over… that frustration still smolders within me.

“Yet, you guys don’t give up, but try to stand up again. I… I just can’t… If I experienced what you went through, I’d never want to leave a safe place again.”

“No… We have an excellent healer with us, so we still have more leeway compared to you or other players…”

“Even so, aren’t you scared? Especially you, a tank? You might be the first to die, you know?”

“That…”

…Of course I was scared.

Even if I suffer a fatal wound, Iris will heal me.

Though, if I die instantly, her protection won’t reach me. I might never wake up again.

But… more than that, watching Onii-chan struggle with disabilities, and now seeing Iris get hurt before my eyes, seems much scarier.

“That might be true… But, if the same thing happens again, and if I couldn’t protect again… that’s scarier for me.”

“…”

At my words, Ouka-san’s expression twisted.

I thought of her as a strong, straightforward girl, but her expression seemed like she was holding back tears.

Uncertain of what to say to her silence, I simply followed a few steps behind her.

After a few minutes… she finally spoke up.

“I don’t get it… Why don’t you guys just run away? What are you fighting so hard for? To return to the original world?”

“…”

I should have answered the question if I thought about it normally, but I couldn’t answer right away.

…To be honest, I hadn’t thought about the old world until she mentioned it.

Returning to my old world?

Is that really what I want?

“…I probably don’t really want to go back to the other world.”

“…Huh?”

“Reiji… one of our companions who also got sent here, I’m not so sure about him. He left his family in the other world, so I guess there’s a part of him that wants to come back. Iris seems to want to send Reiji back there as well.”

And I think those two, whether they return or stay, probably want to be together. Of course, I want the same thing. But there’s one thing different about me from the two of them.

“…But I don’t have that kind of attachment like Reiji. My parents and grandparents passed away long ago, and besides Iris, I have no family. I have a few close friends and acquaintances… but they’re just people I know, nothing more. I think I’m quite callous, honestly.”

“…I’m sorry to hear that.”

“No, don’t worry about it. I might sound like I’m betraying every player who wants to come back… but I don’t have much left in the other world anymore.”

“…In the other world? That sounds a bit…”

She started to say something, but then closed her mouth awkwardly. But… I could somewhat understand what she was trying to say.

I have gotten attached to this world.

In fact, it might be true. Since finding out my mother was from here, I’d been thinking more and more that maybe this is where we belong.

“Well, I don’t know… What I can say is, if Iris wants to go back, I’ll do everything to take her back, and if not, I’ll stay here. Either way… as long as I’m alive, I’ll never leave Iris alone.”

And that’s enough of a reason for me to fight… I chuckled to myself, realizing how messed up I must be.

“…Why are you going so far for that girl?”

“You probably know about Iris’ legs, right?”

“Well, it’s pretty famous that the ‘Princess’ has bad legs.”

“She… wasn’t born with it. It was my fault.”

In the end, no matter how far I go, my starting point has always been the day we lost many things we held dear.

Onii-chan, and now Iris, kept telling me not to worry about it, but I couldn’t help but worry every time.

“I’ve seen her struggle a lot because of that, and every time, I felt frustrated that I couldn’t do much.”

And every time, it tormented me – that it’s my fault she’s like this.

“But… it’s different now. I have the means to protect her, and that makes me happy… At the same time, I feel like I can’t make excuses anymore.”

“…What excuse?”

“Something like… since I can’t do anything, it can’t be helped.

That’s why I want to do what I can.

Training, yes. Seeking stronger equipment, yes.

To avoid having any regrets.

After finishing my story, there was a painful silence between us for a while.

“…When I first saw you, I thought we’re similar, but I’ve never been so wrong.”

In that awkward atmosphere, Ouka-san started speaking.

“I’m just hopeless. If something like that happened, I wouldn’t be able to muster the courage to stand up again.”

Stammering, she began to recount the events just before she was sent to this world.

She’d become disillusioned due to certain circumstances, and lived like a delinquent.

She’d been cold to her suddenly found stepsister.

“I didn’t hate her. She was cute, a model student, loved by everyone unlike me, a really good kid with a great dream… I just thought that she shouldn’t have anything to do with me.”

Saying that much… as if she was vomiting up the overflowing emotions in her chest, she sighed deeply.

“…It was supposed to be that way.”

“What?”

“No, it’s nothing. I… tried to avoid getting her involved in my mess, but the people who have a grudge against me eventually found out about her…”

On the day we were all brought here.

When her kidnapped stepsister was about to be assaulted, before they knew it… they were both sent to this world.

“…And I guess it’s because of that incident, she lost her ability to control her power. If she doesn’t consciously do it, she’d activate her class abilities just by speaking. She’s been practicing a lot to keep it under control even now…”

It must have been about that time when I first heard her voice.

Her self-defense instincts inadvertently exerted the charm effect on the surroundings.

“I… don’t know how to face her anymore. I have no rights to call myself her sister.”

“But you still tried to protect her, right? In that case, you probably don’t lack the qualifications of being a sister…”

“No!”

At her sudden outburst, I stopped and turned around unintentionally.

Trembling like having a fever, she was grabbing her head in an unnatural manner.

“No, that’s just wrong! At that time, seeing that girl almost assaulted in front of me, what I thought first was… No, I was…!!”

Overflowing with tears, Ouka-san’s painful sobs rendered her unable to finish her sentence.

I took out a handkerchief from my pocket and handed it to her, silently walking beside her until she calmed down.

…After walking in silence for a while, she finally wiped her tears and looked up.

“…Sorry, let’s forget what I said. I probably think you’ll despise me if you hear it.”

“Understood. I shouldn’t have made you talk about painful things. But even if you did think that way at the time, I won’t despise you… I think.”

“…Eh?”

“Because you’re still suffering from that, right? Then, that was just a momentary lapse, not your true feelings… I believe.”

“…Why are you saying such embarrassing things all of a sudden?”

With that teary smile, she replied, then fell silent once again.

After another ten minutes of walking… she suddenly muttered.

“…You’re strong, after all.”

“You really think so?”

“Yeah. Hard, sharp, and strong. But…”

Her words faltered. However, the movement of her lips without sound…

—A blade sharpened and hardened for only one purpose is fragile.

Yes, I felt like she said that.

Iris

“…Looks like they’re discussing some heavy stuff over there.”

On the peaceful road leading away from the urban area towards the bridge connecting to the adjacent island, a heavy atmosphere began to envelop the space between Nii-sama and Ouka-san, who were walking a good distance ahead of us, even visible from our position.

“Onee-chan tends to obsess over things once she’s set her mind on them…”

“Ahaha… I get what you’re saying… Nii-sama is like that too.”

Recalling Ayame’s stubborn face, never changing despite me telling her not to worry about my injuries anymore for years, I chuckled inwardly.

Moreover, since she became “Saul”, that obsession of hers had grown even worse.

To be honest, it’s a bit comforting to know that she thinks about us in that way, but… at the same time, I wish she’d think about herself a bit more.

Besides…

“At the plaza, I thought you didn’t get along with your sister, but it seems like… you like her?”

At my question, Kirsche-san became bright red from her face to ears, just like her name.

“Mm… she kept thinking like she’s a delinquent, but she hadn’t actually done anything bad… I knew she wanted to push me away, but still, whenever I was in trouble, she would always appear from somewhere and help me… um, and…”

Ouka-san? You seem to care about your sister a lot, but why do you keep hiding it?

I thought to myself as a blushing, fingers intertwining Kirsche-san continued to gush over her sister in a sickly sweet manner, like a maiden in love.

“And… and…”

Kirsche-san seemed to be happy as she talked about various things… but eventually, her expression turned bitter, and she toned down her voice.

“…Is something bothering you?”

“Yes… Onee-chan didn’t seem to remember, but before we became family through our parents’ remarriage, she saved me once. When I was still in middle school, I was surrounded by some scary high school boys…”

In short, Ouka-san, who was, at that time, still a member of her club. She jumped in to save a younger girl she didn’t know, brandishing the naginata she carries around to drive the boys away.

But because of that incident, she got into a fight with a boy from another school… Turns out he was from a prestigious sports school… and the rumor got exaggerated by a member of the same club who was competing with her for a regular spot. She was pushed out of the club because of it… Kirsche-san only heard about it later, after they became family.

“I wanted to apologize for what happened, but by then, it seemed like it was too late, and I couldn’t bring myself to say it… and then, things turned out like this.”

“I see… I hope you can reconcile soon and apologize properly.”

“Yeah… I’ll do my best!”

With flushed cheeks and clenched fists, Kirsche-san resolved to reconcile with her sister. Her demeanor reminded me of a determined puppy, which brought a smile to my face despite myself.

“And… it wasn’t just the trauma that made you quiet when we first met, right?”

“Yeah… I’m definitely scared, but it’s not like it’s affecting my daily life. It’s just that I have to be conscious and careful when I talk, or else I might accidentally use my power… That’s all.”

While it’s more evident with people she meets for the first time, it’s considerably better with those she’s used to.

Seeing how she’s become more talkative compared to when we first met, it seems she’s accepted me too.

Speaking of her ability… it must belong to her tertiary class gained after reincarnation. If so, then her class should be…

“Are you in the Bard grouping? To think someone actually reached reincarnation with it…”

“I don’t want to hear that from the pure healer Princess.”

“…You’re right.”

I replied with a wry smile to her slightly sulky expression.

However… a tertiary class in the Bard series is truly astonishing.

The Bard grouping she belonged to was tough, but in a different sense compared to a healer like me.

However, that doesn’t mean they’re at a disadvantage in terms of ability; they have the specs that allow them to be one of the best among all classes, provided they’re able to master their abilities.

I must emphasize again, provided they’re able to master their abilities.

The magic used by us magician-type involved combining multiple “words of power” that were systemized during the late period of the old magical civilization. The longer the phrases become, the more powerful the combination of “words of power” and the greater the efficacy and magical power consumption.

Its structure is as follows: first, the command word “Sest” initiates the chanting. By uttering this word, our intentions and magical powers are connected to the world, entering a state of incantation readiness.

Next, the selection of the magic’s form. This varies by profession; in my case, it corresponds to “Purify”.

Then comes the rank of the magic, which roughly indicates how much magical power will be consumed. This ranges from “1” to, in the case of players with secondary class, a maximum of “11”.

Finally, by weaving the chant, which consists of a series of “words of power” predetermined for each magic, the magic is finally activated.

On that note, my exclusive magic of the Lightwing race is handled differently, resembling a prayer more than the organized system described above, so I cannot explain it well myself.

And… the magic used by Kirsche-san’s Bard grouping, called “Curses Song”, possesses a similar nature.

Unlike other magics that combine “words of power,” it weaves power directly into the song itself.

While its range and effect control are vastly superior to other types of magic, there’s a drawback: the effects aren’t stable across different users of the same song.

It was said that this depended not only on the accuracy of pitch and singing ability but also on the emotions infused into the song.

Many scoffed at the idea of emotions being involved in the game system, but with numerous inexplicable occurrences, such objections couldn’t be upheld.

Naturally, there were very few players who could handle such professions properly. Moreover, given the high hurdles of relying heavily on user qualifications and the difficulty of singing in public, the player base was extremely small.

However, there’s another ability that only those who could fully master their class abilities could use, aside from the “Curses Song”. Many people entered the game world dreaming of becoming singers like those in games and anime, only to give up halfway.

“…Onee-chan told me to keep it a secret until I can control it and defend myself.”

“Well, that’s understandable… I truly believe that’s what you should do. Seriously. Yeah.”

“Um, Princess…?”

Surprised by my sudden firm grip on her shoulders, Kirsche-san was taken aback, but I fully agreed with Ouka-san’s words. It’s not unreasonable for her to say that.

If Kirsche-san’s abilities were exposed, she would undoubtedly become a target for various individuals… something I know firsthand.

Because… the Bard grouping, despite many restrictions on its use, is the only grouping aside from my Priest that possesses proper area-of-effect healing magic.

102.Holiday in Ares Isle 2

Iris

After that, we left the handling of the pickpocket boy to the woman who helped us and made our way across the bridge, avoiding public attention along the way.

In a plaza adjacent to the bridge, there were various stalls lining up, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of people. The main festival was still several days away, but this place already had the appearance of one.

Amidst this scene, we sat on a bench beside the ice cream stall designated as our meeting place.

After settling in, I took out the sewing kit I had been carrying and began to mend the torn pouch with makeshift stitches.

“How’s it going with that? Should I take over for you?”

“Mm… It’s a pretty clean cut. I think I can manage.”

Just to be sure, I patched it up with some scrap fabric, prioritizing sturdiness. Since I had been proactive with tasks that could be done while sitting, I could handle this kind of work while humming a tune.

While sewing, I glanced intermittently at the ice cream stall nearby, listening to the rhythmic sound of the spatula.

Despite it being still early in the day, a small queue had already formed at the stall, which seemed to be a peculiar ice cream vendor.

It appeared that they poured soft cream onto polished stones cooled to extremely low temperatures with magical instruments, mixed in fruits or cookies with a spatula, spread it thinly, drizzled some kind of sauce over it, then rolled it into swirls using the spatula before filling them into cups and topping them with fruits and cream.

As I was fascinated by the efficiency with which this peculiar ice cream was being prepared…

“…Something like this existed in our old world.”

“I-Is that so?”

“Yeah, I went to a shop like this once, with friends. But it’s surprising to see the exact same thing here…”

“Heh… What’s the texture like?”

“It’s…”

As I eagerly inquired, Nii-sama began to explain…

“Ah, finally found you guys. Is everything else alright?”

We were interrupted by the voice of the woman who helped us earlier from the direction of the bridge we came from.

Looking over, we saw her walking towards us with another girl.

“Yes, everything’s fine on our end. Thank you very much.”

“That’s good to hear. I handed over that little runt to the guards, so… well, he shouldn’t cause any more trouble for a few days.”

“Sorry for burdening you with everything…”

“Don’t sweat it. We were all told by his old man to keep an eye on him in case he’s up to something.”

With a wave of her hand, she reassured us not to worry, but suddenly, her expression turned serious.

“Are you guys… the Princess and Prince of the North?”

“…So you knew about us all along?”

“Well, you’re quite famous. I wouldn’t be surprised if you got sent to this world too.”

“Are you a player like us?”

“Yes, my name’s Ouka, as you may have guessed, a former player of Worldgate Online. And this is… come on, say hi.”

Standing beside her, hidden in Ouka-san’s shadow, was a girl with silvery hair mixed with pale pink, bearing white wings. She must be Ouka-san’s companion who had just called the guards.

At a glance, she seemed to be in middle or high school age.

She appeared slightly taller than me with a petite figure, but her dainty figure was evident even under a long skirt that a typical city girl would wear.

She seemed to dislike standing out, as she wore a summer coat over her clothes. However… the face peeking from beneath the hood… to put it mildly, she was an incredibly cute girl with a fragile aura.

And when she opened her mouth to speak…

“Um… Hello…”

The moment her meek voice reached my ears, the atmosphere around us seemed to change.

What a beautiful voice.

In a moment, it was hard for us to recognize what was happening.

It was like the sound of a bell, permeating the ears of the listener with a refreshing, light touch, causing one’s thoughts to melt away just by listening.

Caught up in such a voice, we found ourselves dazed.

“U-Um… Are you okay?”

“…Eh? W-We’re fine!”

“…Sorry, I was out of it for a bit there…”

“……I’m really sorry, I did it again… I’m really sorry…”

As we hastily responded to the timid voice, she lowered her head even further apologetically.

Though her voice remained as beautiful as ever, this time it didn’t captivate us as before, allowing us to listen normally. However, she had tears in her eyes, repeatedly bowing and apologizing.

…Clearly, there was some kind of power in her voice earlier.

“Stop it, don’t keep bowing like that.”

“Y-Yes, I’m sorry… I mean, um…”

At Ouka-san’s slightly stern words, the girl looked around hesitantly, then ultimately couldn’t say anything and just bowed her head.

Ouka-san sighed in exasperation.

“*sighs*… It’s my fault for making you do the introductions, so just let me do it. Don’t be too hard on yourself.”

“I’m sorry, Onee-chan…”

The girl looked even more ashamed after Ouka-san apologized to us.

Those two… seemed somewhat awkward around each other.

They were clearly concerned about each other and trying to bridge the gap between them. However… it felt like they were afraid of hurting each other, a bit like the hedgehog’s dilemma.

“She’s Kirsche, my… stepsister. As you can see, she’s having problems controlling her class’s power, so please forgive her if she doesn’t talk much.”

“O-Of course we wouldn’t mind…”

Was that the feeling of being captivated with just a few words earlier?

I’m aware of classes that have the ability to influence their surroundings just by speaking, but… I’ve never heard of anything so powerful.

“…Anyway! We helped you get your wallet back, right?”

“Um, Onee-chan…?”

Trying to dispel the heavy atmosphere, Ouka-san suddenly brought up such a thing, prompting Kirsche-san to hastily intervene… I see, I understand now.

“Well, it’s true that you helped, so we definitely want to thank you.”

“Alright, thanks for being quick about it. Don’t worry, I won’t ask for ten percent of all your money or anything like that.”

Ouka-san stopped Nii-sama, who was about to take out a pouch of coins, and gestured with her thumb towards the stall.

“Just… buy us a little treat. With this, we’re even, what do you think?”

With a wink, she not only dispelled the heavy atmosphere but also signaled that it was time to end the discussion about debts of gratitude. Both of us couldn’t help but relax our expressions.

“It’s a deal, then.”

“I want to try that ice cream too, so let’s eat together.”

“Now we’re talking… Well then, thanks for the treat.”

Ouka-san then nudged us forward, urging us to join the waiting line in front of the stall.

“Come on, Onee-chan…”

Kirsche-san, despite her troubled looks… seemed curious. With her wings fluttering happily, she followed us along.

“Here’s your chocolate mint!”

“Wow… It’s adorable.”

“Haha, I’m adding extra toppings for cute young ladies like you.”

“Well… I’m grateful for your generosity. You’re really skilled at this, aren’t you?”

I smiled and gave a slight nod as I accepted the cup filled with ice cream.

The chocolate mint I ordered consisted of light green rolled ice cream adorned with plenty of chocolate chips, topped with generous amounts of whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and crushed cookies, creating an adorable appearance that made it enjoyable just to look at.

Scooping up a piece of the rolled ice cream along with the whipped cream, I brought it to my mouth with a spoon.

Instantly, the refreshing scent of mint passed through my nostrils, followed by the smoothly melting layers of ice cream, spreading the smooth sensation of cream throughout my mouth…

“Mhm…!”

It’s just delicious as it looks. Unable to resist, I took another bite… and suddenly, a question crossed my mind.

“Oops, that’s a trade secret… or that’s what I wanted to say.”

As the uncle who owns the stall finished mixing the next order and waited for it to solidify, he spoke with a slightly embarrassed look.

“We don’t really know who came up with it.”

“…You don’t know?”

“Yeah. Just one day, a shop showed up in front of the Western Trade Federation’s headquarters… It spread around due to its novelty, and then shops and stalls started popping up everywhere.”

And thus, people who had originally been business rivals were added to their umbrella one after another. In fact, it seemed that this uncle used to work for another shop that sells frozen treat.

It wasn’t through coercions either. The pay and conditions were much better than before, and those actually engaged in business were satisfied.

As I kept listening to the stall owner’s story…

“…Looks like various new things are spreading in the West these days. They say it’s because of a newcomer who recently became a high-ranking member of the Merchant’s Guild…”

Ouka-san added.

It seems that new businesses like this are welcomed in the Western Trade Federation, since they’re mostly profitable and help invigorate the market, which is what a country of merchants should be.

“But… you know, like this ice cream and all, there’re lots of things here that’s similar to our old world.”

Ouka-san concluded with a frown. It seems Kirsche-san also shared the same concern, nodding in agreement behind her.

Could it be that players from Japan are involved?

…As we pondered, the ice creams ordered by others were completed one after another.

Ouka-san opted for vanilla and chocolate, while Kirsche-san went for strawberry. Both were generously topped with whipped cream.

And lastly, Nii-sama took…

“Wow, just vanilla, huh?

It was a simple white rolled ice cream with condensed milk sauce and chocolate sauce drizzled over it.

Seeing this, Ouka-san remarked, but Nii-sama wordlessly began to eat his portion with a slightly sulking demeanor.

It wasn’t that he was unhappy… he was just a bit particular about his tastes.

“Nii-sama, you only eat vanilla ice cream, don’t you?”

“It’s not like that. I just want to enjoy the texture and mouthfeel of the ice cream, so I prefer not to mix in unnecessary things.”

He turned away and savored a spoonful from his cup.

Though he seemed displeased, at his current pace, it seemed that this ice cream suited his taste. With a wry smile, I scooped up a spoonful and offered it to him.

“Instead of saying that, how about trying a different flavor once in a while? Would you like a taste of mine?”

“…Fine.”

He obediently accepted the spoon I offered.

“…How’s it?”

“………Mm, it’s not bad. I can see myself trying it sometimes.”

“I see, that’s good… Guh?!”

“Hehe, it’s payback.”

All of a sudden, a cold lump was thrown into my mouth as if in retaliation. Immediately, the rich taste of milk and the aroma of vanilla essence spread throughout my mouth.

That was a big mouthful! Surely it’s the right amount for him, but couldn’t he have considered my smaller size?!

While protesting with a glare at Nii-sama, whose shoulders were shaking from laughter, I struggled to reduce the amount of sweet ice cream in my mouth.

“……You siblings seem to get along well.”

I heard Ouka-san’s astonished voice.

Looking at her, I saw her looking our way with a bitter expression.

“You two are like lovers…”

“…Is that so?”

“…Really?”

For some reason, Kirsche-san’s face turned bright red as she said that. Isn’t this normal siblings behavior?, thought both of us as we tilted our heads.

“…Onee-chan, is that normal?”

“No way. These two just seem to get along a little too well, that’s all…”

They stared at us in complete disbelief… Is it really that strange?

We’re family, so sharing like this should be normal… With a question mark floating in my mind, I took another spoonful of my ice cream.

“So, uh… I saw you guys hanging around that big armor shop earlier, did something happen?”

“Ah… if you’re living here, there’s something I’d like to ask…”

Since they’d been living here for several months, they might know something. So, I explained to them that we are currently looking for powerful armor.

“I see… So you guys found that shop lacking, right? That place is a directly operated by the city’s guild, and most of the skilled artisans around here are contracted to supply there, so finding something better than that will be quite challenging, you know?”

Ouka-san concluded by saying that we’ll have to tailor something unique regardless of the cost.

As expected,… or ultimately, it was the same conclusion we reached earlier.

“…We still have to find that person after all.”

“Yes… He might be able to introduce us to something good.”

“You guys are looking for someone?”

“Yes, we’re looking for a blacksmith NPC who helped us in the game. We heard he’s also in this world.”

We also received a letter of introduction from Walter-san, who told us he’s living in this city, so he must be around somewhere… as we pondered about that…

“…Ah.”

“…Hmm? Do you know something?”

“I don’t just know about him. Is the blacksmith you’re looking for… by any chance, really, really huge?”

“Eh? Yes, he’s as large as a mountain…”

“Onee-chan, that’s…”

“Right… if it’s that person, I probably know where he is.”

““Really?!””

We spontaneously drew closer to Ouka-san.

“Y-Yeah… but he might be out for a bit… Expect him to get back by late afternoon or so.”

The information came surprisingly quickly, despite us expecting it to take a few days. We began to question Ouka-san, who seemed to know a lot about his movements.

“Um, who exactly are you…”

“Well, that blacksmith you guys are looking for…”

Shocked by our eager inquiries, she swallowed the ice cream she had scooped up with her spoon, gathered herself, and spoke.

“…He’s my master, The Cyclops Swordsmith, Nephilim… I’m his disciple, of sorts.”

Ouka-san scratched her cheek awkwardly.

We were left dumbfounded by this sudden turn of events, which brought us unexpectedly close to our goal…

101.Holiday in Ares Isle 1

Iris

Five days until the Great Martial Arts Festival.

With considerable leeway, the ship carrying us departed from Nordglacier and arrived at our destination, the Isle of Battles, Ares, in about three days.

I’d thought we were heading to the port on the main island with the largest cityscape, but in reality, the ship advanced towards its neighboring island, underneath the grand arena where the Great Martial Arts Festival takes place, which occupies the entirety of said island.

Diving through the tunnel that opened towards the sea at one corner of the arena, what greeted us was a wide dock, hidden away like a secret base.

In that open space, there was only our ship for now, but it was said that in a few more days, it would be filled with ships carrying invited guests.

“It’s amazing… to dock in a place like this.”

“Mm. This is a dedicated dock to the dignitaries, leading directly to the accommodation facilities. It’s not open to the public for security reasons.”

His Majesty Alfgard explained to me… I felt a bit down calling him His Majesty all the time, so I’ll refer to him as Uncle from now on… He gestured for Nii-sama and me to disembark first.

With the help of the attendants, we cautiously set foot on the luxurious crimson carpet laid on the ground…

BOOOOOOOM!

The moment our feet touched the carpet, a thunderous explosion erupted nearby, ringing out multiple times just above our heads, causing us to instinctively flinch.

We ended up huddling together, Nii-sama apparently trying to shield me from the explosion. Looking up fearfully at the sky through the open ceiling… I saw a great deal of fireworks decorating the sky.

“Looks like Irisria is the first to arrive, hahaha.”

Laughing heartily, Uncle descended the gangway.

“Please don’t worry, these fireworks are released to signify the start of guest reception when dignitaries arrive at this dock for the first time. It’s a tradition.”

Lenny-san, who followed suit, whispered to me from behind.

Uncle was looking at us with an amused face. Beside him, Leonhardt-sama was holding his head in his hand, seemingly exasperated.

The surrounding attendants were looking at us with warm eyes for some reason…

“…You planned this, didn’t you, Uncle?!”

“Hahaha, since it’s your first time experiencing such an event, I thought I would let you two take the first step.”

With a light tap on my sulking head, Uncle descended. Following him, everyone else who had been on the same ship disembarked.

Among those accompanying us were the guards brought by His Majesty, along with a few attendants who looked after his affairs.

Aside from them, there were Aini-san and Lenny-san, our personal physician and attendant respectively.

Milly-san, who had been permitted to accompany us as a friend of Nii-sama and me.

Titilia-san, who, after Leonhardt-sama finally relented, now stood behind him in the guise of a maid.

And finally…

“Oh god… It finally stopped…”

With a voice and complexion that seemed on the verge of death, Reiji-san, completely down with seasickness from the voyage, staggered down last.

“Good grief… really, Uncle?”

“Haha, he seemed genuinely happy because he looks out for us a lot.”

Since we met, His Majesty had become quite the amiable relative, always paying attention to us in one way or another.

…Now that I knew he’s actually my blood relative, I didn’t feel bad about it, although it did feel a bit complicated.

“Come on, we have business to attend to here, but this is supposed to be a festival. Let’s enjoy it without sulking, okay?”

“…You’re right.”

We were currently standing outside the arena, which also housed the accommodation facilities.

Since we have the chance to explore the city, I take a deep breath and switch my mood, realizing there’s no point in sulking forever.

Our current outfits for incognito traveling… I’m wearing a fluttery white dress reminiscent of what a young lady might wear at a summer resort, topped with a light hoodie.

Nii-sama, aside from the sword at his waist, was dressed much more casually than usual, wearing a shirt and slacks.

Having disembarked from the ship, we were led to a room that looked incredibly luxurious—something akin to the highest-grade suite rooms we’d only see on TV in our old world. I couldn’t even begin to imagine how much it would cost to stay there.

After dropping off our belongings in the room and consulting with everyone about our plans for the day, Nii-sama and I, having obtained permission to leave, headed straight out to the city…

“But… It’s so crowded here.”

“Well, that’s a once-every-four-year festival for you.”

People, people and people as far as the eye could see.

The scene reminded me of the bustling streets of Tokyo, where I lived during my childhood when my parents were still alive.

On the other hand, there were guards stationed all around the city, seemingly patrolling, which is fortunate as it suggests that the security isn’t too bad.

“I wish Reiji-san could have come too…”

“Yeah… Who knew he’d be so seasick…”

Said Reiji-san had completely succumbed to seasickness and had to retire to bed. Aini-san said she would bring him medicine later, so I think he’ll be okay…

“…Come to think of it, it’s our first time walking around the city together, just Nii-sama and I.”

“Now that I think about it… I’d always left this kind of stuff to Reiji-san.”

“…Eh?”

“No, nevermind. Well then, would you grace me with your company today, my princess?”

“Yes, please escort me today, my prince?”

With a playful tone, Nii-sama extended his hand, and I responded with a composed face, but soon we both burst out laughing and I took his hand.

Lately, he seemed even more troubled than Reiji-san… I was relieved to see him relax in the atmosphere of the festival, as we started walking through the crowded city.

“Still… this city is amazing, isn’t it? We haven’t even entered the urban area yet.”

“Is this supposed to be a bridge…?”

We were currently strolling along what seems, at first glance, to be the main street of the city, but it’s actually a large bridge connecting the grand arena to the main island, tens of meters wide and over a kilometer long.

Shops lined both ends of it like a shopping district, bustling with not only tourists but also people carrying weapons and gear, apparently intending to participate in the Great Martial Arts Festival.

As we started to feel dizzy from the speed and volume of the crowd…

“Hey, there’s a frozen sweets stall at the plaza over there.”

Suddenly, I overheard the conversation of some boys who seemed a bit younger than me as they pass by.

Now that’s something I couldn’t ignore… At the same time, I realized that I haven’t had any ice cream since coming to this world.

It’s currently summer. While it’s not as hot and humid as Japan, Ares Isle is considerably warmer than Nordglacier.

Because of that, I’d just developed a craving for ice cream… I checked the weight of the pouch at my waist.

Since we were expecting some significant purchases, we’d prepared a decent amount of money.

Naturally, this small pouch only contained a small portion of it, put aside for enjoying the festival.

Most of the sum was kept in Nii-sama’s magic bag… It would be awkward for the stall owners if we suddenly handed them gold coins, wouldn’t it?

This money came from Leonhardt-sama, as a reward for saving his city and treating his subjects.

In this world, people whose healing capabilities comparable to mine, able to heal back even lost limbs, were few and far between, mostly limited to the Church of Eirene’s Saints… Under normal circumstances, requesting their service required paying a large sum of donation.

And I just handed out those divine miracles for free.

Since we considered ourselves indebted to Leonhardt-sama, we refused the payments… initially.

However, if rumors spread that treatment is available for free in the Roland territory, it could potentially create friction with the Church… We couldn’t decline after he seriously and earnestly explained the consequences.

And for this occasion, we needed funds urgently, so in the end, we relented and graciously accepted it.

As I recalled these things…

“Iris, let’s check out this shop for a moment.”

“Ah, I’m coming.”

The shop Nii-sama pointed to a little ahead… located midway across the bridge, seems to be the largest arms dealer in the area.

It was the first store mentioned when we asked about reputable places. I quickly caught up to Nii-sama who’s calling out to the shop from its storefront.

The reason we traveled the city incognito this time… was to find someone who could make new armor to replace the damaged equipment.

And also, to look for a certain swordsmith who used to be an NPC in the game.

We looked around the shop for about an hour, and achieved neither of our goal.

The shopkeeper was kind, the atmosphere inside the store was pleasant, and the armor crafted by the artisans lined up neatly was visibly of high quality. There was no dissatisfaction to speak of.

However…

“…It seems it’s no good after all. Not that their skills are lacking; the quality is top-notch, but…”

“It’s not good enough?”

“Yeah… The best they’ve got was more or less equal to our previous gears. That’s about what I expected from this Isle of Battles.”

Our previous equipment… was makeshift that was considerably lower in grade compared to the one just before the reincarnation, due to the level reset… but that’s a story from the game.

In this world, it’s a masterpiece made with materials generally considered rare, and not something we can easily find substitutes for.

Nevertheless, even with my amateur eyes, I could see armor that seemed to rival those.

That’s how impressive this shop is. However… our current demands were simply higher.

“…It simply wouldn’t do if it’s the same as before.”

“Yes…”

I nodded in agreement with Nii-sama’s bitter words, feeling the same discomfort.

In order to even stand a chance against the Death Serpent, we need equipment that could surpass our previous one.

“Perhaps we should find a craftsman and commission armor from them, or…”

“Find it somewhere, right?”

Items like those found deep in ancient ruins, guarded by legendary enemies, relics crafted in the past with the pinnacle of technology and magic.

However, in this world, we can’t expect that kind of game-like dungeons with treasures inside guarded by raid bosses.

In that case, we need to find a skilled craftsman… someone like Milly-san, who’s at the top level of her chosen profession.

I wished I had the contents of the player warehouse from the game… but since I didn’t, there’s nothing I can do about it.

Sighing deeply, just as I did… at that moment, a strong impact from behind.

“Kyah?!”

“Watch out!”

Suddenly, someone collided with us with considerable force, and Nii-sama caught me as I stumbled.

“Oops, sorry sis!”

Saying so, a boy who seemed to be in his early teens ran away.

“Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, thanks for helping, Nii-sama.”

“No… More importantly, that boy just now…”

I suddenly realized what Nii-sama murmured.

Huh? His outfit and voice seem familiar…?

Yes, as I watched his back disappear with suspicion…

“I see, that damn kid…!”

Nii-sama, who put together what happened and was about to act, then…

“…Woah?!”

Ahead of us, the boy running away suddenly flew unnaturally through the air and rolled on the ground, as if someone had tripped him.

“Ouch… What are you doing?!”

“That’s my line. Doing something like this at a festival could affect our reputation, you know?”

Saying so, a tall woman with long, glossy black hair tied in a ponytail stepped on the boy’s back as he laid face down, immobilizing him.

Although she had a somewhat stern impression, she seemed like someone who would be described as a Japanese beauty.

Without hesitation, she searched the boy’s jacket pockets and pulled out a familiar coin purse. After confirming its contents, she finally turned back towards us, who had just caught up.

“I’m sorry, thanks for the help!”

“Don’t worry about it. Is this your purse? Your waist pouch is torn.”

“Huh… Oh, it really is…”

Upon hearing her, I hurriedly checked the pouch… there was a slit in it as if it had been cut with a sharp blade… So the boy was a pickpocket?

“I knew it… Did you just check your wallet a while ago or something?”

“Ah… Y-Yes, I did!”

Just a moment ago, when we heard about the shaved ice, I checked the contents of the pouch. Come to think of it, the boy being trampled and immobilized by her was the same person as the boy talking about sweets from earlier.

“And that’s why this kid targeted you. Well-bred but airheaded kids like young miss here are easy prey, so be careful.”

“A-Airheaded…”

“…You’re absolutely correct, it’s our fault for letting our guard down.”

Although I was shocked by the sudden dissing and Nii-sama’s lack of follow-up, I couldn’t complain since I did let myself be pickpocketed.

“So, what are you going to do with him? If you don’t have anything against it, I’m going to hand him over to the guards-”

“W-Wait! Anyone but the guards! My little brother is hungry and waiting… Ack?!”

Despite the boy’s desperate pleas, she ruthlessly applied even stronger force into her step.

My eyes widened at the harsh treatment… but when she opened her mouth again, she looked utterly disgusted.

“…Cut the crap, will you? You’re just old man Gerald’s little runt. He specifically told me to tie you up without reservation any time you cause trouble, you know.”

“Shit… You’re Dad’s acquaintance…”

“And you have no brother, you just want some pocket money to play in the festival, so you go stealing from some tourist girl. Well, let’s just say your choice of target is absolutely horrible.”

While saying that, she looked at me and pointed to the vicinity of my head… apparently, the hood of my hoodie had come off while I was running, and I hurriedly fixed it.

What are you going to do with him?

Her questioning gaze seemed to understand our circumstances and position.

Our current position here is as invited guests from another country.

The boy, who now seemed completely resigned and drooped his head dejectedly, had, albeit unknowingly, reached into my wallet.

Even though he was just a boy, if the matter was reported to the proper authorities, he would likely be detained for a while, at least until the end of this Grand Martial Arts Festival… That would be the most lenient measure considering what he did.

However… not out of pity for the boy, but for our own self-interest… getting involved any further might also get us detained for questioning, which would make this entire trip to the city pointless. So…

“Rather than making a big deal out of it, we’d prefer to leave it to the guards as normal. We still have things we want to do in the city.”

It would be better if this incident taught him a lesson and he stopped pickpocketing… before he got involved in even more dangerous situations by targeting the wrong people.

“You’re being too soft… Well, if that’s fine by you. My companion has already gone to get the guards, so I’ll leave the rest to her. Oh, by the way… there’s an ice cream stand ahead in the plaza, let’s meet up there.”

“…Yeah, let’s do that. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

“Thank you very much for your help.”

Expressing our gratitude, we took advantage of her kindness to prompt us to leave, and the two of us quickly left the scene…

???

“…Hnn?”

My consciousness vaguely resurfaced, and I slowly raised my head.

What greeted the eyes were bundles of scattered drawing papers and patterns strewn all over the desk.

…Apparently, it seemed I got too engrossed in sketching the design plans for the commissioned armor, and ended up falling asleep while still seated as soon as I finished drawing.

“Wait, the blueprints!”

Hastily, fearing that the meticulously drawn blueprints might become unreadable due to drool, I scrambled to sit up… and heard a light rustling sound from behind.

Picking up what had fallen behind me, it turned out to be…

“…A blanket?”

Someone must have draped it over me while I was asleep.

There’s no need to ponder over who did it… Only one person could have done it.

Absentmindedly, I glanced at the spear hanging on the shelf at the edge of my field of vision.

In the game, it was a partner I entrusted with my life. However, since coming to this world and settling into my current life… I hadn’t touched it once.

Yet, the fact that its tip was clean and free of dust clearly indicated that someone had been taking care of it.

And it was clear who that someone was.

In this workshop halfway turned into my living quarters, with even a bunk for taking naps, I hadn’t let anyone else in.

Not even my own master, who had been looking after me… though, it’s more like it’s too small for him to enter even if he wants to.

Except for one person… my stepsister, who had been living with me.

For no reason in particular, I took down the beloved spear from its shelf and inspected its blade.

The meticulously polished blade seemed to reflect the personality of the one who had taken care of it… my stepsister, with whom I share my living space. A faint smile escaped me—

What’s with the big sister act?

The words echoed in my mind, causing my body to tense up.

Several past scenes flashed back in my mind…

“Oh, Onee-chan, you’re up early today, should we-”

“Don’t follow me. I never accepted you as my sister.”

My ugly self, coldly treating the girl who desperately tried to follow me like a puppy.

I don’t think I truly hated that girl who became part of the new family with my father’s remarriage a year ago…

It’s just that back then, I had just quit my club unfairly due to a conflict and was living a rough life… like a delinquent.

I only pushed her away because I thought having such a helpless little thing around me, amidst the grudges I held, would be troublesome and I’d feel sorry for involving her in my mess.

At least, that’s how it was supposed to be…

“Hey, guys, looks like the Queen Bitch here has quite the cute little sister!”

“She isn’t… I don’t think of her that way, so please, leave her out of this!”

“Damn, what a lame-ass response. So you won’t mind if we do THIS, right?”

“No?! Onee-chan! Onee-chan!!”

“Don’t do it! STOP!!!!”

My heart creaked like it was about to break at the sight of brutality before me, as several rough and savage boys pushed the little girl to the ground and were about to tear off her clothes. And it was all my fault.

…I thought I had become stronger.

I had been practicing martial arts since I was a child, especially the naginata, to the point I was confident that I was good enough to subdue even a male opponent with a decent stick.

In addition, one day, my physical ability and reflexes suddenly improved, and I no longer felt like I was going to lose, no matter if it’s a male or even an adult, even in a head-on fight.

Even so, I never should have laid a hand on anyone myself. However, whenever I found someone doing bad things, I’d end up knocking them around one by one.

It felt like becoming a hero of justice, and it felt good.

Those I had previously beaten down started to hold a grudge against me… if they couldn’t beat me, they would target people close to me, and the girl who’d been living under the same roof as me over the past year was their perfect target.

Although our parents remarried and she suddenly became part of my family, she and I couldn’t be any more different. I’d always been told that I was too boyish, while she was a lovely but shy girl.

She wanted to be by my side during my rough time, but I didn’t want to put her into danger, so I thought I’d push her away.

But in the end, I was half-hearted in either letting her stay or pushing her away, those who harbored resentment against me took notice.

I ended up dragging her into the worst possible situation and hurting her.

It’s your fault.

It’s your fault.

It’syourfault It’syourfault It’syourfault It’syourfault It’syourfault It’syourfault It’syourfault It’syourfault It’syourfault It’syourfault

Yeah, it was all my fault.

“Ugh…”

Like a curse, the voice of self-blame entwined itself around my entire body.

With a sour sensation rising from the depths of my throat, I hastily returned the spear to the shelf, covering my mouth with both hands and desperately trying not to vomit.

“*pant*…*pant*”

After enduring for a while, the nausea finally subsided. Shaking my head, I stood up, looking around for my stepsister who was nowhere to be found.

In the end… just as her dignity was about to be shattered before my eyes, a saving grace arrived.

Surrounded by a strange magic circle beneath our feet, we were sent to this world… which just happened to be the VRMMO we reluctantly played together.

But since then… I hadn’t been able to wield this spear properly.

If such a thing hadn’t happened right before I was thrown here… Would I still have been swinging this spear around, flaunting my self-righteousness even in this world, fearlessly?

Or perhaps, consumed by arrogance, I’d drag in the girl I wanted to keep safe, just like back then… Perhaps there would have been no salvation this time, and we would have met an even worse fate.

Fortunately, during the idle years before the level cap was lifted, I had spent time honing my crafting skills on a side project out of boredom. Strangely enough, those skills proved useful here as well.

Last night, as I drew blueprints and cut out patterns, it was the same. While I have no experience doing such work in reality, here, I can perform tasks as if my body instinctively understands what needs to be done.

Thanks to that, the person who helped me when I was at my wit’s end, whom I now regard as my master—though I’m not sure if “person” is the right term, given his race—saw the armor crafting skill I possessed. He facilitated renting this house, which doubles as a workshop and residence, and also arranged several jobs for me.

It’s been three months since I came here.

Initially, it was just repairs and adjustments, but eventually, new crafting requests started coming in. Now, I’ve gained a decent reputation, and with my stepsister, we can make a sufficient living day by day.

However… it seemed that I’d forgotten what courage is all about since that time.

I found myself unable to pick up the spear again, or take a single step forward from the day I was thrown into this Isle of Battles, Ares.

“So bright…”

Stepping out of the workshop, the sun was already high, its strong rays piercing my eyes. It seemed I had overslept considerably.

My stepsister was easy to find.

Every morning, as part of her routine, she would practice voice training and singing… all I had to do was follow the sound of her singing carried by the wind.

Back in our old world, I once noticed that she was sometimes recording something and sending it somewhere, and when I asked her, she shyly told me that her dream was to become a singer.

A little walk led me to the hill overlooking this island city’s center, and there she was.

A fleeting atmosphere.

Quiet and graceful demeanor.

With white wings of a Highborn on her back, she looked just like a true angel.

My stepsister, not at all related to me by blood, couldn’t look any more different from myself.

One might argue that her delicate appearance might be attributed to her avatar… But even discounting the perspective of familial bias from being my stepsister, she was naturally quite a beauty.

Apart from changing her hair color to a silver with a hint of pale red and adjusting her skin tone to match her hair, she had hardly been altered from herself on Earth.

At first, I felt a twinge of jealousy at her cuteness… but quickly realized that she and I were from different worlds from the start. I, swinging my naginata fiercely in club activities and at the dojo, while she aspired to be an entertainer—it was obvious the paths we chose were different.

However, her figure, singing and gazing into the distance, bathed in the morning sun, exuded a fantastical atmosphere… I couldn’t help but feel a fleeting sense of fear that she might vanish into thin air at any moment.

“Um…”

Was that why? Despite wanting to watch her a little longer, a blunt voice escaped my lips.

“Oh, Onee-chan, good morning…”

“I’m hungry.”

To my stepsister, who turned around with a bright expression, those words slipped out.

“…I’m sorry, I’ve already prepared breakfast, so I’ll reheat it for you.”

As soon as she turned to me, her face, previously lit up with joy, stiffened, and she quickly clouded her expression, looking down.

A prick of guilt surfaced at her reaction… but I still couldn’t figure out how to face my sister at this point.

I have to wonder what she even sees in me if she still decides to live with me even after all that happened.

Watching her back as she hurried back towards the house… I let out a sigh.

“I did it again… I’m such an idiot.”

Even though she was trying her best to reach out in her own reserved way, why am I like this? I really hate myself for not being able to be straightforward.

Driven by self-loathing, as I tried to go back after my stepsister… at that moment, flowers bloomed in the distant sky.

“That’s… right, the festival is starting soon, isn’t it?”

I remember, those fireworks announce the arrival of distinguished guests—the representatives from various countries coming to the island.

It’s still a few days before the main festival begins, but it seems some eager royals have already arrived.

“…The festival, huh? Well, since it’s happening, maybe I should invite her to see it.”

It might be a good opportunity to bridge the gap that still exists between me and my stepsister.

But how should I invite her…? While pondering over such matters, the inviting scent of breakfast wafted through the air, leading me back to the house.

As I walked, perhaps because it was the beginning of the festival, my steps felt a bit lighter.

(Author’s Notes)

This was a bit of an interlude.

Among those transported, there are some who weren’t logged in when it happened and got sent straight from the real world, and others who couldn’t venture into dangerous places and quietly earned a living in the city… These two happen to be both, and they’ll be recurring characters in this arc.

99.King’s Visit

Iris

When we returned to Rolandia Castle, Lenny-san informed me that Leonhardt-sama had requested my appearance in his office.

So it’s about that person after all… I thought as I strolled through the castle where I already knew every nook and cranny.

Amidst the bustling servants, as I approach the area where the guest rooms are located, the number of people dwindles. However, the tension among those we pass by grows stronger as we proceed.

“…Hey, is it fine for me to come with you?”

“I don’t think they’d mind…”

Reiji-san, who seemed suddenly anxious about the atmosphere within the castle, followed along tentatively.

But I understood his feelings. Thinking about what awaits us ahead, I mentally reviewed the etiquette I’ve learned since coming here, over and over again.

And so, we reached our destination, Leonhardt-sama’s office.

Suppressing the pounding of my heart due to nervousness, I knock on the door…

“Please, come in.”

At the sound of Leonhardt-sama’s voice from inside, I steal a glance at Reiji-san. Confirming his nod, I turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.

“Oh, you’re here at last!”

A booming voice greeted us as soon as we stepped into the room.

Inside the room, a middle-aged man clad in a robe of unmistakable quality welcomed us with a wholly delighted expression.

Behind me, I could hear Reiji-san muttering “Hey, isn’t that…?”.

Hiding the tremor of nervousness within me, I still managed to delicately lift the hem of my skirt and bend my knees slightly, bowing my head. Following suit, Reiji-san attempted to bow as well…

“Haha, there’s no need for that. Please, raise your heads. After all, we aren’t in a formal meeting; I want you to feel relaxed… We’re a long way from that stuffy royal castle, aren’t we?”

He said with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.

Relieved, I raise my head and smile at his lighthearted remark.

“It’s been a while… Uncle.”

“Mm. I’m truly glad that I’m able to see you again, safe and sound, Irisria.”

“We did meet earlier though, didn’t we?”

“Sorry, could you keep that from Leonhardt?”

We exchanged glances with each other.

His name was Alfgard Nordglacier.

He was our uncle in this world, the younger brother of the previous king, Aureolus… and the reigning king of this country.

This middle-aged man with a sturdy build didn’t quite fit the image of a ruler of a magical kingdom.

And here he was, brimming with joy at my safety by patting my head with his large hand.

While his predecessor, Aureolus, ruled with wisdom and decisiveness, His Majesty Alfgard was well known for his benevolence and dedication to the people, as befitting his name “gard”, meaning “protector”.

“Saulquez, too, has become more expressive indeed. I couldn’t have wished for more.”

As His Majesty happily nodded, Nii-sama, who had seated himself on the sofa earlier, smiled awkwardly.

“We’re really sorry. Although you cared about me and my sister so much back then, we weren’t able to remember it…”

“Considering how you both acted at the time, I could hardly fault you.”

“Is that so?”

I tilted my head upon hearing the king’s sympathetic remark.

“It really was… Seven years ago, you two always seemed absent-minded, to the point where I thought of you as dolls…”

His Majesty suddenly cut off his words.

Clearing his throat, feeling uneasy about what he just said, he once again flashed a warm smile, then resumed speaking.

“But now that both of you have grown up quite splendidly, I’d say we should leave that past behind us… Welcome back, you two.”

Rather than a king, he seems more like a kindhearted uncle.

Feeling somewhat ticklish from this impression of His Majesty, Nii-sama and I exchanged a glance and smiled.

It’s exactly teatime when we were all gathered, so the servants quickly moved out and prepared… soon enough, it became a tea party in here.

His Majesty was seated at the head of the table, with Nii-sama and I on his left and right, and Lenny-san diligently attending to our needs behind us.

Reiji-san, too, was graciously permitted to join, and now sat nervously next to Leonhardt-sama.

“…By the way, why has Your Majesty come here?”

After taking a sip of tea, I finally voiced the question I’d been wondering about.

I had intended to visit him someday, but I thought he would be in the royal capital, so seeing him all the way out here was unexpected…

However, as soon as I asked, everyone gave me a strange look.

“…I did try to inform you about His Majesty’s arrival ahead of time.”

“Eh…?”

“There was a messenger about a month ago, just a few days after the stampede incident… From the looks of it, that must have slipped from your mind.”

“Ah… I’m really sorry, I didn’t pay much attention to it at all…”

It was around the time when I buried myself in work, and Reiji-san went crazy with his training.

We simply didn’t pay attention to it… On the other hand, Nii-sama seemed to be aware of the news all along.

“Then I’m also to blame. I should have made sure to talk to you again after things settled down.”

“That’s not true at all! Leonhardt-sama was already busy as is…”

He had been handling duties far beyond what I could imagine, there’s no way I could fault him for that.

I panicked and tried to reassure him not to worry about it as he bowed his head in apology.

“About His Majesty’s purpose… He’s to make a guest appearance at the ‘Great Martial Arts Festival’ held on the Isle of Battles, Ares this summer.”

“…Great Martial Arts Festival?”

“Allow me to explain. As much as I’d like to say that this visit to Roland was to see my adorable niece and nephew in person… truthfully, that’s only an afterthought. I only stopped by this area since it’s our westernmost territory, from which we can travel to the isle, which is located near the western continent.”

“Your Highness Irisria, are you familiar with Great Martial Arts Festival?”

“Um…”

To Leonhardt-sama’s question, I try to recall the description that should have been part of my studies about this world.

Taking place once every four years, the Great Martial Arts Festival wasn’t just a big fighting tournament… it also had strong elements of a harvest prayer.

In this world, there are two main deities that people worshipped, Eirene, the Goddess of Peace, and Ares, the God of War.

Eirene presides over spring and autumn, while Ares presides over summer and winter.

In spring, Eirene sows the seeds of life.

In summer, Ares bestows vitality.

In autumn, Eirene harvests the grown crops.

And in winter, Ares guards the resting earth.

Thus, while taking turns in their roles, they watch over the people in this world, as told in the religion practiced here.

Every year, a grand festival corresponding to the four seasons was held in rotation, and this year, it was summer… thus, the Great Martial Arts Festival.

While thinking about it, I suddenly realized that something’s off.

There’re four seasons… which means, in this world, the axis should be slightly tilted toward the sun if it’s another planet like Earth.

But the fact that Nordglacier in the far north and Flamberge in the far south have the same seasons as everywhere else… does put how this world works into question.

“…Irisria?”

“Ah… I’m sorry, I got lost in thought for a moment.”

His Majesty cast a puzzled glance at me as I fell silent. Clearing my throat, I switched gears.

“Well… I did learn about the grand festivals during my studies, so I think I know a thing or two. It’s a custom for all countries to have their important figures attending to the festivals as guests, am I correct?”

It’s not necessary for them to be heads of state or monarchs, but as far as I remember, it’s a Nordglacier tradition for several members of the royal family, including the king, to attend each year.

Similar to us, Flamberge, which was ruled by a monarchy, also had members of the royal family attending. The Western Trade Federation, whose rulers are elected, would send its top political leaders.

As for the Eastern Islands, which don’t have a royal family or an elected leader, their revered “Shrine Maidens”, who usually rarely appear in public, would attend the festival.

“Yes. This year, not only myself but also the queen and my son are scheduled to attend, but I have some business to attend to. I’m stopping here by myself first, and plan to meet up with them later.”

“Thank you for taking your time to come here.”

Even with the magical trains connecting the royal capital to the Central Business District, and then taking ships, it took about a week to get here from the capital.

While appreciating his journey, I considered if there’s any way I can accompany him after hearing his purpose.

…To be honest, I wasn’t particularly fond of a big fighting tournament. It’s something else…

“So… What do you think, Saulquez, Irisria? If you’re both willing, you’re welcome to join…”

““I’m coming as well!””

Nii-sama and I eagerly responded to His Majesty’s proposal.

While Reiji-san had been hanging back due to the atmosphere, it’s evident that he’s been restless since this topic came up.

Surprised by our sudden enthusiasm, His Majesty blinked his eyes.

“It’s settled, then. I’m going to arrange for your participations. If you, especially Irisria, are coming along, it’ll surely motivate our participants…”

Because there’s no other princess in this country right now, His Majesty smiled wryly.

“Also, if there’s anyone else you want to bring, let me know in advance.”

“Is that okay? In that case… I have an acquaintance who is an excellent artisan. I’d like to invite her as well.”

“Oh… certainly. If she’s such a person, the island would undoubtedly be a good learning opportunity. Bring her along, by all means.”

Nii-sama had already begun negotiations regarding who’s accompanying us. He’s always reliable in this regard.

By the way, it’s already confirmed that Reiji-san would join as Leonhardt-sama’s bodyguard, which made me happy that the three of us could go together again.

The reason why we’re so eager was because of the location where the Great Martial Arts Festival will be held.

The Isle of Battles, Ares.

It’s a group of islands located between the northern and western continents, the largest of which was basically a city centered around its main attraction, the grand arena.

During the Great Martial Arts Festival, people express gratitude to Ares for the vitality he bestows during summer… by showcasing their fighting skills in a tournament, with strong competitors from various countries naturally gathering there.

However, disrespectful as it may be, what piqued our interest was something else entirely.

As much as the tournament’s about people’s martial arts, it’s also a way for artisans to showcase their product, namely weapons and armors.

For that reason, during the time of the festival, the venue where it’s held become a bustling trading hub where skilled artisans everywhere, regardless of race, gathered.

Having most of our equipment damaged from the previous battles… for us, it’s logical that it should be our next destination.

(TL’s Note)

I finally did my homework on Greek mythology and changed the goddess’ name from Ailene to Eirene.

Iris

“…Return to your original self… Restoration!

I pressed the brilliant light in my palm against the chest         of the patient in front of me, a man who’d lost an arm.

As the light enveloped him, the stump where his missing arm had been gradually grew back to a healthy arm, just as it was before the injury.

“Good, no external injuries, no abnormalities in the internal organs…”

After thoroughly checking his condition and being satisfied with the results, I swiftly packed up my belongings and left the room, leaving the man, still asleep under the effect of dreamgrass’ nectar, on his sickbed.

This was a building located slightly off from the central square, akin to a citizens’ hall in Japan.

Currently, it was being used as a temporary clinic by Leonhardt-sama’s arrangement. However, the majority of the occupants had already recovered and returned home.

Compared to a month ago when the injured and sick crowded the place, the number of patients walking through the building was sparse.

Nevertheless, many eyes still watched. I covered my head with the hood of my thin, white summer robe, avoiding the gaze of others as I stepped outside.

Immediately, I was met by the glaring sunlight.

My purple irises seemed to lack resistance to intense light. Squinting against the brightness, I adjusted my robe to cover my eyes.

The season had transitioned from early summer to midsummer.

Despite it being midsummer, this area, located at a relatively high altitude, was considerably cooler compared to Japan’s own summer climate, with a crisp and refreshing breeze flowing.

Inhaling deeply of the pleasant air, I stretched my entire body in relaxation.

Though using Restoration had been quite taxing in the past, it was now much less burdensome.

…Still, healing five people in succession did leave me somewhat fatigued.

While I was confident that I could go for more, Leonhardt-sama’s ironclad “Five people per day only. No exception.” rule left me with no room for protest.

“…Looks like you’re done here as well.”

A voice came from beside me.

It was Reiji-san, who had been accompanying me as an escort today.

…He still got along quite badly with the Sirius cub, without any sign of improvement.

It seemed that they had been fighting the whole time while waiting for me outside the building.

“What am I ever going to do with you two…?”

“You can’t blame me, she started it.”

“Yes, yes… Come here, Snow.”

Hearing my voice, Snow happily rushed over to me.

At first, I named her “Snowdrop”. Then people started shortening it to just “Snow”. After a while, everyone, including me, had grown to accept this new name.

I lifted Snow up and enjoyed her fluffy fur, then turned to Reiji-san.

“How’s your body feeling, Reiji-san? You’re not pushing yourself too hard, aren’t you?”

For the past month, I’d heard him spend all his time either aiding in the reconstruction or indulging in rigorous training, with little breaks in-between.

“Told you I’m fine. See, I’m even taking a break from today’s training.”

“Lies. You were forbidden from entering the training ground by Leonhardt-sama for the entire day, weren’t you?”

“Uh…”

“Good grief… Training is important, but overexertion is not good for you at all. You know I can tell just by looking, right?”

Though Reiji-san only had a wet compress on his cheek visible above his clothes, it was evident that underneath, he was dealing with bruises, abrasions, and muscle soreness.

This was a new ability I’d gained since the capital’s defense.

I was now able to see the outline, albeit vague, of people’s injuries and other conditions.

“…Sorry.”

“Alright, let me fix you up. Please stay still for a moment.”

I reached my hand toward Reiji-san.

With just a touch, his wounds disappeared from his body. However, I left his muscle pain untreated on purpose.

This was another newly gained ability of mine. I could now perform something similar to my Heal spell by simply laying my hand on a target, without the need of chanting. Moreover, depending on my visualization, I could apply it quite flexibly, such as only focusing on surface wounds.

In fact, it’d become so natural for me that I’d been inadvertently doing it until someone else pointed it out to me.

“Why didn’t you treat my muscle pain too…”

“It’s a no-no. Since you didn’t actually injure the muscles, I think you should rely on your own healing abilities for that.”

That, and if I simply healed him fully, he would, without a doubt, start another round of intense training.

“…You’re right. Thanks.”

“It’s my pleasure. But from now on, try to say it properly.”

I tried sounding a little angry as I said that, but for some reason, Reiji-san was looking flustered and scratching his cheek awkwardly… Did I tease him too much?

“…U-Understood.”

“Now that’s better. Can you make it a promise?”

Though he seemed bewildered, Reiji-san nodded.

Thus, we continued walking through the city side by side.

It’d been a long time since we’d gone out together like this…

Almost like a date, I thought before hurriedly shaking my head to dispel the notion.

“…What’s up?”

“I-It’s nothin’!”

Did I just bite my tongue?!

I quickly covered my aching mouth.

“…Pfft, did you just… Woah?!”

Before Reiji-san could burst into laughter, Snow slammed herself into the back of his knee.

That staggered Reiji-san a little, but he managed to keep himself from falling over. It’s actually kind of impressive.

“Laughing at people’s mistake is bad, you know. Thank you, Snow.”

Snow replied with a proud bark.

“You… Well, whatever, as long as you feel better.”

“Ahaha… Thank you for your concern. But I’ve already made up my mind on that. There’s no use worrying about things you can’t change, right?”

I recalled the few days when my life hit rock bottom. It was still awful when I think about it.

With a wry smile, I began walking leisurely again.

“What could I even do anyway… if it’s about my own birth?”

It was one month ago… the day after I dispelled the curse on Reiji-san and Saul-niisama.

“I’m really sorry. As the tank, I shouldn’t have been the first one to be incapacitated in battle…”

“Can you please stop blaming yourself for that? None of us could have expected fighting such a strong opponent.”

As soon as Saul-niisama woke up, he kept saying things that sounded like self-blame while lying on the bed.

Reiji-san, on the other hand, was already up and sitting by the window, looking out while lost in thought, his expression grim.

Seeing those two like that… I merely sighed while peeling an apple at the bedside.

Suddenly, there was a light knock on the door.

“Come in,” I said, representing our voice, and the door opened.

“Yo, pardon my intrusion.”

There appeared a young man with bright red hair, who had taken off the flashy coat he usually wore and was now dressed comfortably.

“Ah, Higami-san.”

“Long time no see, Higami-san. I heard you lent Onii… Iris a hand this time, thank you so much for your help.”

Saul-niisama bowed deeply.

As for Reiji-san… he seemed somewhat displeased and turned away.

“There, there, Ayame-chan and friend, it’s good to see both of you making a recovery.”

“How have things been on your side, Higami-san?”

“Well… Things have been oddly busy in the castle lately. I came here so that I wouldn’t get in their way.”

“Is that so? I’ve been here the whole time, so I don’t really know what’s going on outside.”

“Hmm… from the bits of conversation I overheard, it seems they’re expecting a scheduled visit or something. I don’t know the details.”

It was true that after treating those two, I’d been staying in their room since. I wondered about what happened.

“…There’s another thing I want to discuss.”

“Oh, right. Higami-san, were you at the company when we were sent here?”

“Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m here for. How much do you guys currently know about this situation?”

“Um, we…”

We listed the limited amount of information we’d gathered so far.

About the “White Book” that appeared in the game.

The speculation that the CEO of Arks VR Technologies in our old world, Aureo Uber, might be someone in this world.

“…Wow. Didn’t expect you to know this much already.”

“Does that mean…”

“That’s correct, Aureo is indeed the former king of this nation, Aureolus… I heard it directly from his mouth just before I was teleported.”

“I see…”

Although I thought of that person as my benefactor, I felt like there’s something else to him…

Besides, we had more important things to ask before worrying about it.

“Do you know how he ended up in our world? If so… Is there a way for us to come back?”

“…Sorry, I can’t fulfill your expectations. It wasn’t like he teleported himself to Earth… Someone or something must have done that to him, along with his sister who was with him at the time, apparently…”

Saying that, he flipped through the book he had in his hand.

He had borrowed it with Leonhardt-sama’s permission. It seemed to be a royal family almanac containing portraits and photographs of the royal family of this country.

Why would he have something like that… as I was wondering, his hand stopped, and he placed it on the table to show it to us.

“This woman… Do you recognize her?”

Saying that, he pointed to a photo in the book, and what was reflected there was…

““…What?!””

Nii-sama’s and my voice of astonishment overlapped.

There was Aureo-san with the signature pure white wings of the Highborn race… or rather, the previous king Aureolus in his twenties.

And smiling next to him, appearing to be in her mid-teens, a woman without wings… someone very familiar, someone unforgettable…

“……Mom?”

The only difference was her hairstyle… Aside from that, she was my mother in my old world without a doubt.

“…So she was really your mother. Aureo did speculate that might be the case when I confronted him about it.”

“Are you saying that…”

“…I’m a child born in this world all along?”

I hadn’t paid much attention to the family tree stuff since I thought it was just a piece of the game’s settings. But, if it’s true…

“Exactly. By the way, Iris-chan… Yanagi-kun was originally your mother’s stepchild, right?”

“Yeah… we’re stepsiblings.”

Even though our father in our world treated me no differently from Ayame, who was his actual child, the fact that we weren’t related by blood was mostly forgotten unless it’s brought up…

“Yanagi-kun. Your mother was sent to this world when she was pregnant with you… in other words, you’re completely a native of this world.”

So not only that I wasn’t related by blood to my father… but the world I’d lived for more than twenty years in wasn’t even my own.

“So, uh… Do you wish to know who your birth father, by any chance?”

“That’s…”

Scar-san, without a word, looked away from me, and just for a moment, his gaze shifted toward the photo… toward the previous king, and I didn’t miss it.

I see. So that’s how it was all along.

“…If that’s all for this discussion. I’ll take a walk outside for a bit… I need some time to process all this.”

“Yeah, let’s call it a day here. Sorry if I was a bit too hasty.”

“It’s not… Sooner or later, I’d have to know.”

With that, when I stood up, Reiji-san, who had been silently listening to the conversation, also got up from the window side.

“…Let me come with you. You need an escort, right?”

“…………Yes, please.”

I almost broke into a run when I left the now deathly silent room.

Just for a little while, I didn’t want to think about this multiple worlds stuff, or my family at all.

That’s why… I felt relieved that Reiji-san, who wasn’t part of my family, decided to come with me…

The person I thought was my benefactor… turned out to be my real father.

Moreover, he was the mastermind behind this incident.

When I found out, I felt like my entire world had collapsed, and I was in some extreme depression since.

But soon, I became too busy with my duty to treat patients, and it completely slipped from my mind.

No, that’s the wrong way to put it. At that time, I threw myself into work to cope with the depression.

Until I was on the verge of mana depletion, I was busy treating patients, barely eating at night before jumping into bed, and sleeping like a log until morning due to fatigue.

For a few days, everyone was thoroughly appalled by my sudden change in lifestyle. It was so bad that Leonhardt-sama had to personally step in and enforced a new schedule because he couldn’t bear it anymore.

But because I was working my butt off, I didn’t have to think about stuff.

As time passed and I gradually moved on from the depression, I realized that it’s pointless to dwell on the truth of my birth.

One thing remained clear, however.

When I said, “I’ve already made up my mind”, I meant “absolutely find a way to come back and confront him”.

And when I do, I WILL slap him. Not once, but twice, one for me, and one for Mom.

I clenched my fist tightly and reaffirmed my determination. That much is non-negotiable.

“…Hey, stop emitting such an ominous aura.”

“…Sorry, I let it slip a bit.”

I hastily coughed and calmed myself down.

“So… What’s on the schedule today?”

“Let me see… There’s no more work today, so maybe I’ll… Is it okay here?”

I took out my sketchbook from my bag.

“In that case, I’ll go get some drinks or something. Snow, I’ll leave Iris to you.”

At Reiji-san’s words, Snow merely snorted.

I could see veins popping on Reiji-san’s temple.

But since Snow snuggled closer to me, it seemed like she didn’t object to it.

…Geez, I wonder if I’d seen this kind of dynamic before. She must have taken after her mother more than I thought.

Sighing at that, I sat on a bench in the central square, where there was some shade, and the sunlight was milder.

It’s been a month since that stampede.

Only a week had passed since I spread my sketchbook here in the central square, but the scenery had changed again compared to when I last drew.

For example… the cafe across the square had a corner destroyed in that commotion, and last week it was still covered with sheets.

However, now it has been cleaned and repaired, and it seems they didn’t just restore the damaged part but turned it into a cafe terrace.

Despite it being mid-afternoon, there were already several customers in the seemingly reopened store, chatting away.

A month ago, everyone was lined up at the soup kitchen with gloomy expressions, anxious about their future. But now, daily life had largely returned, though I couldn’t help but notice that the soldiers seemed unusually busy today.

No one in this bustling city paid attention to me, sitting on the bench with my hood low.

…Actually, a small girl who was talking happily to a troubled-looking young soldier noticed me.

With a bright face, she waved her hand energetically, and I responded with a small wave.

She was carrying a paper bag with something that looked like a baguette… perhaps she was running an errand for her mother?

Seeing this scene somehow lifted my mood, and I eagerly opened the sketchbook.

Flipping through the pages, I found the drawing I was looking for.

There, the scenery I had drawn here a week ago spread across the entire paper.

“Hehe… Guess I need to redraw it again.”

Erasing the parts that had changed in the past week, I started drawing the current scenery in their place.

Having done this several times, the paper was quite worn out.

However, thinking that the ever-changing drawing was testament to the city’s recovery made me feel happy, and a small giggle escaped me.

While enjoying the tranquility in this way, tracing the traces of my redraw, suddenly…

“…Young lady, you’re quite skilled at this, aren’t you?”

“Eh… Kyah?!”

Startled by the voice that suddenly came from behind, I hurriedly hugged my sketchbook.

Looking to the side, the first thing I saw was white wings.

A well-built Highborn man who somehow popped out behind the bench was peering my way.

“Please excuse me, young lady, I didn’t mean to frighten you.”

“*pants*…”

The man quickly held up his hands in apology.

…Snow, after briefly glancing at the situation, immediately returned to basking in the sun.

So, it seemed this person who appeared behind me wasn’t someone requiring special caution. Snow is sensitive to malice, so if there were any issues, she wouldn’t be quiet like this.

With my heart, which had been beating violently, calming down, I raised my head to have a better look at the man’s face…

“………Huh?”

I froze at the sight.

It was a face I’d seen before.

Though there wasn’t direct acquaintance, during the game era… due to my position, I had many chances to see this face up close, more than other players.

“Trouble seems to have happened a little while ago, but the recovery work has progressed considerably. It seems the ruler and residents of this city are quite spirited and capable.”

“Y-Yeah, I think so too…”

While giving a half-hearted reply, my head was in chaos.

Why is he here of all places…?!

Looking around, there was no one else accompanying him.

It was at this time that Reiji-san returned, and he immediately rushed over to my side.

“Hey, what do you think you’re doing-”

“Reiji-san, don’t!”

I hurriedly stopped him from pushing the man’s shoulders.

His hand stiffened as if he was surprised by the look I was giving him, so I gently wrapped it with both my hands and lowered it.

“This person meant no harm… Please, trust me on this.”

“…If you say so.”

He reluctantly stepped back, and I heaved a sigh of relief.

If he actually got physical, who knew what could happen next…

The man, seemingly unperturbed, gave me a smile.

With a “shhh” gesture at his mouth.

Okay, I kind of get what’s happening now.

He must have slipped away from his entourage. Come to think of it, he was certainly capable of doing that, I smiled wryly at the thought.

It made sense why no one else was around.

“Uh-oh, if I stay here too long, Leonhardt won’t be happy when he finds out. Allow me to excuse myself.”

“Ah… T-Take care of yourself!”

“Thank you… It’s my pleasure to see you full of life like this, Irisria. Until we meet again.”

He said that casually and left.

If the castle was turning upside down with preparations for receiving visitors for a month now… Considering who it’s for, everything makes sense when put together.

“…Who the hell is that, anyway?”

“Aha… Ahahahaha…”

I could only let out a dry laugh in response to an utterly unamused Reiji-san.
