35.My true identity, revealed in the noisy bath

Iris

The evening after speaking to Weiss-san.

As the victory banquet went on and everyone was getting more and more drunk, Captain Walter, out of concern for us, kindly allowed the women in the company to leave the banquet early, namely me, Milly-san and Philias-san, who had apparently hit it off with each other, and another girl, who I had seen together with Philias-san before.

And so the four of us were free to do anything tonight.

Though, saying that I’m free right now was kind of a stretch.

With my right arm being held by Milly-san, and my left being held by Philias-san, I was completely at their mercy as they hauled me off like some rare creature to the women’s changing room of our rented accommodation.

It was only when the other three were already in their underwear around me that I realized the situation that was now in progress.

Sure, I got used to seeing my body in the hot spring before, but only because it was my own, I still felt intensely guilty about looking at another woman’s naked body, as if I were a peeper, and I hurriedly closed my eyes at the haunting sight and tried to leave before coming back later when I was alone…

“Um, can I come back after everyone’s finished…”

“Sorry, but no. If you fall and hit your head, we would be in big trouble. Your brother requested us to take care of you, so don’t struggle.”

Nii-sama, you plotted all of this?!

Philias-san, with her hair undone and let down naturally, really had the air of a neat and proper lady, when I had the chance to take a closer look at her like this… if it hadn’t been ruined by the wriggly hand gesture she was currently making as she approached me.

“Come on, just give in, nya. As a fellow woman, I just can’t overlook the fact that that you haven’t had a bath in three days, nya. Not to mention, you aren’t able to use magic to cleanse yourself, are you, nya?”

I couldn’t find any counterargument to Milly-san’s follow-up words… By now, she’d already in her birthday suit.

Bathing was something I’d been concerned about for a long time. I had been wiping myself with a wet towel for the past few days when I was about to sleep, but as a Japanese who bathed every day without fail, I felt a little uncomfortable and was concerned about the smell.

“I’ll do my best to take care of you.”

The last person who could have saved me from this predicament… one of the wizards I had seen before in the second squad during the battle, a petite girl with black hair cut around her shoulders, bowing her head in a heartless, apologetic manner, but with a hand basket full of hair and skin care products already down in her hand, her whole body insisting that she has no intention of letting me go as well.

Enemies. All of them were enemies.

One against three, one of whom was Philias-san, who was as strong as Reiji-san and Saul-niisama. It was an impossible battle.

In the blink of an eye, I was stripped down to my underwear and taken to the bathroom, where I found myself sitting in the washing area.

Why does this always have to happen…?!

There was a shower-like magical tool for three people and a bathtub that could hold four or five. In such a cozy atmosphere of a public bathhouse, I was desperately throwing my gaze to a place where I could see nothing… because if I dared to shift my eyes even a little, I would be caught in that “heavenly hellscape”. The sight of three beautiful girls, all of them of different types, unabashedly exposing their skin was too stimulating even for the previous “me”, no matter how little sexual passion “I” might have had.

“Ah! You’re getting split ends, nya…”

Milly-san’s sad voice leaked out from behind me. She was shampooing my hair, softly wrapping it in foam, one scoop at a time. We were spending twice as much time in the washing area as the others because of how carefully she was washing my hair. Why did she have to sound so sad about my hair getting split ends anyway…

“Well… this is troublesome indeed. Lenny, maybe tomorrow you could trim the ends of her hair for her.”

“Understood, Mistress.”

Troublesome… That word made me think of the events that had transcribed since I arrived here. Indeed, it was trouble after trouble, the latest of which being the explosion I was caught in the other day, so my body was starting to show signs of wear and tear…

“Um, if my hair gets in the way, I can just have it shortened…”

“”“Overruled (nya).”””

“Why…”

A unanimous rejection. It’s my own hair, and I didn’t have a choice…

Well, when I was still a “he”… uh, anyway, objectively speaking, if a girl with such beautiful long hair said that she was going to shorten her hair, people would disagree with that… Even though this waist-length hair was gorgeous to see in the game, in the real world, it got in the way of my daily life quite a bit, what a shame…

“Next, I’ll be washing your legs, milady. Please lift them a little… yes, place them on my lap. Let me know if it tickles.”

I was dazed and at the mercy of the comfort of being washed by others. Behind me, Milly-san was carefully rinsing off the foam from my long hair with lukewarm water stored in her hands, so that as little as possible fell on my body.

Philias-san was washing herself nearby, and just a few minutes ago, Milly-san was there, having her hair combed by Philias-san. For some reason, we were taking turns washing each other.

The dark-haired girl… She looked older than I am now, but probably younger than the previous “me”… Lenny-san was polishing my body with her fingers and a soft cloth, also with great care. I tried to tell her that I could wash my own body, but she insisted that “I shouldn’t take over what’s supposed to be her job”. I felt guilty for letting someone else serve me like that, but I was feeling incredible right now… Even though it was a shame play where I wasn’t allowed to do anything until my front was being washed… it was as if the fatigue that had been endured over the past few days was being washed away…

……

………

…………Funyaa~

……Wait, what?! I can feel my soul leaving my body!

Oh no, if this kept up, I was going to turn into a no-good person…

In any case…

“Philias-san, may I ask?”

“What’s the matter?”

“…It’s about Lenny-san…”

“Oh… Ehehe, how do you feel? She’s got such good hands, hasn’t she?”

“Yeah, totally…”

At my words, Lenny-san, who was polishing between my toes with her slender fingers, blushed and bowed lightly, saying, “Thank you very much”.

“This girl has been my attendant for a long time, you know. We’ve known each other since I was a kid, before I was a mercenary. When we lost our status and were forced to leave our home, she and a butler named Diaz were the only ones who followed us.”

“My mistress used to be really annoying, but she got better before I knew it.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?”

The easygoing manner they talked to each other exuded more trust than words could express. So that’s how it is. I did hear that Zeltis-san and Philias-san used to come from a noble family. As their attendant, it’s likely that Lenny-san came from some well-off family, too.

“Somehow… it feels really embarrassing to be treated like this, it’s not like I’m an aristocrat or a princess or anything…”

““…What?””

“…Eh?”

To my casually muttered words, Philias-san and Lenny-san turned to me with a look of surprise on their faces… like “What on earth is she talking about?”. Well, the atmosphere was much softer than that, but I shrank away from being stared at with such an expression.

“…Did I say something weird?”

Fearfully, I looked up and asked if I had misbehaved in any way.

“Well, that was pretty weird…”

“…Uh, Iris-chan, you aren’t just some aristocrat, you’re the legitimate princess of this country, don’t you know?”

“Yes. ‘Her Highness Irisria Nordglacier’… am I correct? It has been an honor to serve you in this way.”

The words slid through my brain, after a good few dozen seconds had passed.

“……………………Pardon?”

The only thing that came out of my mouth was such a silly sound.

“Princess of the Northern Magical Kingdom”, or “Northern Princess” for short. Such a title did exist in the game. However…

“I certainly didn’t expect that to be the case here as well…”

“Uh, give me a moment, nya, I’m getting a little confused, nya…”

The two reincarnated people a.k.a Milly-san and I were scratching our heads. How was it possible that my official position in the game carry over to this world?

“Loss of memories… so the Captain’s words are true. You’ve been missing for several years now, and it’s well known among the higher-ups. I’m sure a lot must have happened to you to look the same after all these years except changing your race.”

“I’m sorry for your loss, Her Highness… If you need anything at all, just ask me, okay?”

With tears in the corner of her eyes, Lenny-san spoke to me in a quiet but firm tone.

“Well, I suppose it’s a bit late to say this but, I’m going to leave Lenny in Her Highness Irisria’s care as her personal attendant, so you can use her as you like. I hope you don’t mind if she isn’t at the level of a qualified court maid.”

“Eh, EHH?!”

“You see, for the time being, we’re supposed to conceal your identity. As long as we are working together, if your identity is discovered in any way, we can’t afford to build a reputation of having treated you badly. So aside from protecting you like we’ve been doing, we have to at least keep up appearances. I’ll join your escort as much as I can whenever I have time. And more than anything, it’s a bad idea to leave you alone among a bunch of men, isn’t it?”

Since my position was publicly known, should something happen to me, it’d be a big problem. Worst case scenario, they could be all executed…

“Y-You’re right, but that’s just…”

“There’s no need to worry. She’s fully on board.”

“Yes. It’s a pleasure to be able to serve you once again… This time, I’ll use this second chance with utmost sincerity, Her Highness.”

…Uh, what did she mean by “once again”?

I felt something tugging at my heart, but I couldn’t say no to her when she was looking at me with a serious expression on her face.

“O-Okay then… I’m pleased to work with you, hope we’ll get along…?”

“Your wish is my command.”

The look of obvious delight on her calm face made it impossible to pursue the matter further.

“By the way, I’m having a bit of a hard time deciding whether to treat you as Her Highness or as Iris-chan. Which do you prefer?”

“Um, the latter, please… Princess’s still a bit…”

I answered Philias-san’s question on reflex. I didn’t want others to treat me like a princess, as it’s going to be taxing for both parties.

“Mmm, if you say so. Alright Iris-chan, I’m washing the foam off, so close your eyes~”

“Yes, please do.”

With a splash of hot water, the foam left on my body was rinsed away. As I shook my head and tried to let the water escape, my wet hair was quickly and lightly wrung out by Milly-san and put up in an updo, and a cloth was immediately wrapped around it.

When my body was finally fully washed, I looked into the mirror once again and saw my dainty body, regaining the glow that had dulled after a few days of bedridden life… I think I’ve lost a little weight. When I pinched my stomach, it felt even thinner than before. I was too skinny to begin with, I guess I had to eat a little harder…

“Look, the shadows have disappeared. I’m so glad that you’re doing well again.”

“Uh, I still have to recover mentally… Sorry for the inconvenience.”

As Philias-san, who had her hand on my shoulder from behind and was peering into the mirror, said, the painful shadows that had covered the area around my eyes from fatigue over the past few days had completely disappeared. In this way, I seemed to have outwardly recovered completely.

“Iris-chan, lemme carry you into the bath, okay? Lenny, you’ve done well enough, so wash yourself and come over here. I’ll take over from here.”

“Yes, thank you for the kind offer.”

“Um, if it’s this close by, I can do it myself… Wah?!”

In the blink of an eye, I was picked up lightly, and my legs flapped in surprise, but I was carried to the bathtub without a flinch, perhaps because of the difference in our physical abilities.

“Oh no you don’t. I can’t let a girl with lame legs like you walk around on this wet and slippery floor without support. Just leave it to your big sister here.”

“…”

Come to think of it, I hadn’t even walked on my own feet since I entered the changing room. Philias-san, who had soaked only her feet in the bathtub before me, gently soaked only my toes in the hot water.

“How’s the water? Is it too hot?”

“It’s okay…”

As someone who was used to hot baths in Japan, I think it was a bit lukewarm. I preferred it to be as hot as the hot spring I was in the other day…

“I’m going to put you down, then.”

Slowly, slowly, I was submerged in the bathtub. Then, once the water reached slightly below my shoulders, I finally expressed the question I had been feeling up to this point.

“…Why am I sitting on your lap?!”

I turned bright red and yelled.

Yes, I was somehow completely wrapped up in the arms of Philias-san, who came in with me when she soaked me in the bathtub. The feeling of naked bodies in close proximity could not be better. My extra sensitive back was coming back to bite me, pun unintended.

“It’s alright, we’re both girls, aren’t we? Besides, I’m just afraid you’ll sink if I let go of you.”

She had a point there. This bathtub was a little deep for my body, and with my current crippled body, I would sink if I got distracted. I was ashamed that I doubted her concern and reluctantly withdrew…

“Ah… Just the perfect size… The texture is fine, smooth, and great to the touch… It’s so nice to be young…”

“I know right, nya?! Swap with me after you have your fill, nya.”

“That’s your goal all along, isn’t it?!”

I took all of it back. Her only concern was her own self-interest!

Philias-san hugged me from behind and pressed her body against me… Her chest, CHEST!!

Chest, now that I think about it…

My gaze was guided to that side of Milly-san. Her slender yet glamorous chest attacked my vision with its overwhelming mass.

I looked down at my own chest… so “plain”. If I felt generous enough, I could call it a gentle hilly region.

“What’s wrong?”

I looked at Lenny-san, who had finally finished washing herself and moved into the tub, noticing the petrified me and called out to me with concern. This petite girl should be the closest to me in stature, right…?

Two mountains firmly asserted themselves.

I see, so this is what they called “shortstack”.

“W-Why are you staring at me with such tearful eyes, did I do something to offend you?”

She asked me a question with a frightened look on her face, and I suddenly come back to my senses… No, you didn’t do anything wrong, I didn’t mind your size at all!

“Aww, don’t be so pessimistic, Iris-chan. There’s still room for growth in the future. I’d seen your mother’s portrait before, and she had a little… a little…”

Why was she cutting off her sentence at the end there?! Certainly, my “mother” in my memories looked very young!

…No, I should calm down. My memories as a man told me being small had a lot of advantages. There’s no need to beat myself up by comparing to others. If I looked at it calmly, there’s nothing to fuss about at all.

“…Well, we’ll figure something out.”

“I SAID I DIDN’T MIND!!”

My exclamations echoed through the bathroom as sympathetic eyes looked at me and tears came to my eyes…

(Author’s Note)

The title “Northern Princess”, which had been mentioned several times, finally reached the person herself.

People wouldn’t probably treat her like a princess that much… probably.

As a side note, The reason why Iris’ name was extended this time is that the royal family of Nordglacier in this world is a magical nation, and the words used in the chanting in the work, the words used in the magic of the attribute that the person symbolizes, are supposed to be attached to the back of the name.

For example:

  • “Ria” in “Irisria” means “Light”.
  • “Lus” in “Aureolus” means “World”.
  • The older brother who doesn’t appear in this chapter is supposed to be “Saulques”, with “Ques” meaning “Thunder”.

Iris

My consciousness resurfaced. What was I doing just now…?

My thoughts were hazy, and I couldn’t remember as quickly as I’d like.

My vision was blocked by something, and I could hardly move my body, as if I was stuck in a closed space.

The cracked “Protection” disappeared, leaving behind a pale light.

“…!”

I realized that something heavy was pressing against my body. The feeling of warm body heat and hard, solid muscles. Why was there a man on top of me…?

“Eep…!”

In an instant, I was terrified to the point of being on the verge of panic, and I quickly tried to push the person on top of me away.

Squish

My hand slipped off his body, leaving a damp sensation behind as I grasped into the void.

The most recent memories I could remember started to replay in my brain as it finally rebooted properly.

A flash of light.

An explosion.

Two people blown away like paper by the shockwave that came after, engulfed in flames…

It was me, and…

“……Hey… you’re… finally awake…”

A voice came from overhead.

It was a voice I’d only started to hear since this morning… Weiss-san.

Just as I came to that realization, the weight that had been pressing down on me rolled over, and the light of sunset pierced my eyes.

“…Kid, why are you… so scrawny anyway… it was like hugging a pile of bones… (coughs)”

“Weiss-san!!”

When I finally grasped the situation and jumped up, I saw a man with severe burns all over his body, his clothes torn and tattered, his bare skin burnt reddish-black in places, and blood oozing from everywhere… Weiss-san looked nothing like he did just moments ago.

I, on the other hand, didn’t feel anything unusual anywhere… I didn’t think my “Protection” alone could do this. In fact, Weiss-san, who had been in the same situation as me, was left in such a cruel state.

No.

I was only able to get away relatively unscathed… because he used his own body to shield me from the blast!

“Y-You need treatment now- Ouch!”

My hand that reached out in haste was knocked away with a thud.

“No need to… Frankly, I don’t give a damn… Go, you’ve got other things to do…”

“But I can’t leave you like this…!”

“Shut, up! My role is to protect you…! Your role… is over there, get going already!”

With a blood-curling voice, he pointed to where the battle was still ongoing, which made me turn my eyes involuntarily.

The Goblin General was still trying to shake off Saul-niisama and Reiji-san, who were desperately holding it back. It seemed that the enemy had no more card left to play. Perhaps the only way it could turn the situation around… was to kidnap me and escape. But that plan had fallen through, and as long as I could get everyone back on their feet, the enemy was as good as finished.

But…

Saul-niisama, who somehow managed to remain on the frontline… was holding his shield with only one arm. His other arm was slumped, unable to hold the sword, and pointing in a strange direction. Reiji-san, who was trying to cover for Saul-niisama as much as he could, suddenly held his chest and coughed up blood. The rest of the mercenaries had wounds all over their bodies… that’s our current situation.

Gingerly, I bit my lip and stood up. Yes, I must do something about this. As the person in charge of everyone’s life here, I had a duty to make a choice.

Who should I prioritize?

It’s settled. Objectively speaking, Weiss-san alone didn’t have that high of a priority. I should be focusing on supporting those who were still fighting on the frontline. Because if they collapsed, that would be the end for all of us. It’s a fact that I understood too well. It’s something I’d been doing all the time back when it was still a game.

But…

11th Purification Mantra: Light of Compassion, Light of Rebirth…

I knew what was at stake here. With this, my magic power would be completely depleted. There was no more left over to spare. This is highest-ranking area-of-effect recovery magic of my secondary class “Bishop”. It was a heavy burden for this weakened body, but the only way to overcome the current situation at once was to use it. The area-of-effect magic that I had used so many times was ingrained in my brain. With only a few seconds left to complete the chanting, I desperately searched for a way to contain us all within the spell’s coverage.

…However, the distance between us was simply too great. My mouth kept on chanting while this futile wish of mine lingered in my mind.

I’m sorry.

I’m sorry, I’m sorry!

I’msorryI’msorryI’msorryI’msorry!

“…Embrace the Goddess’ blessings! ‘Divine Embrace’!!”

Trails of light ran across the desolate land. They formed a three-dimensional magic circle, spreading out in a hemispherical shape and enveloping the wounded in a warm embrace. The burnt earth began to sprout green, melting away all injuries and ailments.

…Except for me and Weiss-san.

All the magic in my body was mercilessly sucked up by this magic to the last drop.

The whole body rapidly lost its strength, and I fell to my knees. I was barely able to hold on using my staff as support. I couldn’t fall yet. I had lost most of my five senses, and the only sound I could hear was the weak, snatching sound of air being sucked into my lungs. It’s clear that I had already exceeded my limit, and I could no longer feel my limbs. Still, I must see it through. In order to save everyone, I had to cut down on one person.

It can’t be helped, can it…? I’ve already worked myself to the limits…

In my hazy vision, the scene of battle had changed. Reiji-san and his Saul-niisama, who had released their race characteristics before I knew it, were fighting at full force, with none of the earlier struggle. Behind them, the mercenaries, who had regained their original capabilities, were sweeping the surroundings under the direction of Philias-san and providing support to the two of them.

I did my best.

Despite everything, I did my best.

Is it time… to give up?

Even if a life’s going to disappear before my eyes… am I going to give up?

…No. I hate giving up.

…I won’t give up.

…Absolutely never!

There must still be some left! Desperately, I gathered up the squeezed magical power from my extremities. Not enough… still not enough! But I had to do it! I will not give up, I never want to give up, I can’t let myself give up!

A faint, fleeting light lit up in my hand. Not enough, this still didn’t seem to work properly. Please, my body, lend me more power!

“…I beg you… let me hold on for a bit longer!!”

I think I managed to squeeze out enough power to show signs of activating “Heal”. Almost there!

“UUUUUAAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHH!!”

I didn’t care if it ripped my throat out, the light of “Heal” that was forcibly activated with such a cry reached Weiss-san, vaguely out of the corner of my eyes.

That was the last thing I saw before my consciousness sank deeper and deeper into the darkness…

“…You’re awake… thank god…”

Someone sighed deeply in relief at my side… Reiji-san?

Against the backdrop of the ceiling of my borrowed room, which I had grown accustomed to seeing, I could vaguely see Saul-niisama’s worried face. Milly-san’s teary, angry expression. And the feeling of touch all over my body… was that Philias-san’s stern face I saw?

“I’m touching your hand right now, can you tell? Now it’s the ankle… Okay, now look over here, how many fingers are there?… Looks like your visibility hasn’t recovered yet.”

One by one, I gave answers to Philias-san’s questions.

My sensation was still there, but my vision was blurred, and I couldn’t see anything clearly. And then there was the intense weariness that entangled my entire body. I didn’t feel like I can move a finger.

“That’s magic depletion for you. As long as the body is in a state of self-preservation, the body will not accept any act that consumes magical power outside it. You won’t be able to use magic for a few days until you’re back to normal physical condition.”

Someone spoke from a distance… Walter-san?

“The battle was over since yesterday. You’ve been asleep ever since, young lady.”

“But what about…?!”

Yes, I couldn’t stay like this, I have to treat my injuries. I tried to move my immobile body, but Philias-san held me back.

“Rest easy, Weiss-kun is safe at the moment. It might leave some scars, but it’s not life-threatening. Everyone else came back in one piece. Except for you.”

I could finally relax at those words. Thank goodness…

“I have to let you know that it’s just too risky to completely use up all your magic. You could have died… I guess it was lucky that I prepared that many potions. But don’t do anything like this ever again.”

Philias-san reprimanded me strongly.

“You’re just exaggerating-”

“YOU ALMOST KILLED YOURSELF, DAMMIT!!”

“Yeah… how can you be so reckless?!”

A hand slammed beside my head, startling me… not that I could react much in this condition, though. But the sight of Reiji-san staring at me in tears, and Milly-san glaring at me like a mother scolding her child was enough to make me tremble.

“Calm down, you two. We aren’t here to intimidate her.”

“…Sorry, I overreacted.”

“…I just couldn’t hold back…”

After chiding the two of them, Saul-niisama turned toward me. From the look in his eyes, he seemed even more furious than anyone else.

“That said, I, too, am really angry about this whole thing. Do not, for a moment, think that we’re exaggerating what we said.”

With a deep sigh, Saul-niisama continued in a tired voice.

“They’re correct, you know. Your heart had actually stopped beating, several times in fact.”

I gasped at what he just said. I really did come close to never waking up again. At the time, I had no idea it was that dangerous. I turned pale, realizing what I had done.

“..…Sorry…”

“No, it is rather we who should apologize. You shouldn’t have gone through this.”

“For now, get some rest. You look terrible right now.”

“…Yes.”

I closed my eyes as everyone looked on, and my body, craving for rest, was soon overcome by sleep and my consciousness sank into darkness again.

It took another two days before I was able to get myself up.

Finally allowed to go out in the vicinity, and using a staff to support my unstable feet due to the lack of enhancement magic, it didn’t take long for me to go to my first stop… the person I was looking for was by the town’s well.

“Um…”

“Ah, you’re awake. Nice to see you.”

Without looking up from the vegetable he was peeling… Weiss-san curtly greeted me.

“I thought you were exempted from peeling vegetables.”

“Well, since I have nothing to do after being forced to take a vacation, might as well volunteer for this… Take a seat somewhere.”

I did as he said and sat down with difficulty on a stone staircase of a reasonable height around here.

“…Magic depletion, hmm? Sucks to be you.”

“I’ll get used to it.”

We sat in silence for a while.

“…So it really did leave scars.”

The left half of his face had keloid-like burn scars in places. I heard that the fatal injury was mostly cured by my “Heal” at that time, but it was not perfect and had to be treated with a large amount of potions.

If that’s the case, then there must be more scars beneath his clothes, too…

“Don’t sweat it. These hands can still fire a bow… If anything, I’m just lucky that my life was saved, you have my thanks for that.”

I immediately shook my head. I didn’t deserve any thanks, because at that time, I…

“…I’m sorry, I…!”

I thought I had resolved not to cry. Tears were flowing down my cheeks.

“I… at that time… I didn’t choose you…!”

I had only accounted for lives by the number. And I put his life at the bottom of the list. He had risked his life to save me, even though he had been injured to that point. I felt so guilty that I couldn’t even look directly at him, and my unstoppable tears started to trickle down to the ground.

“Ah… Darn it, that’s why kids are a headache to deal with.”

My vision suddenly darkened.

“(sniffs) Eh…?”

He was forming a circle with his middle finger and this thumb… and placed them in front of my eyes…?

“Eep?!”

Suddenly, I felt a slight shock and a sharp pain on my forehead. Did he just… flick my forehead?

While I was still confused by the sudden event, a sharp finger was thrust in front of me.

You saved the entire company. That’s your job, and only you can do it. And I’m still alive and kicking right now. If I’m mad at you, it’s because of the way I heard about it later, but, well, you’re alive, too. Is that not enough for you?”

“But that’s only hindsight…”

“Hindsight or whatever doesn’t mean jack. Both you and I are alive and preparing for the banquet. That’s all what matters, isn’t it?”

Still sounding annoyed, he continued his story, scratching his head.

“Captain Walter told me that I should be proud of myself, that any scar I got after protecting a girl was a medal. That’s why I’m going to hold my head high and live with these scars. So how about you giving me something more positive than an apology?”

He then pushed a basket of vegetables toward me.

“You’re learning to cook, right?”

“Y-Yes! I’m still starting with the easy dishes. But why?”

“Make something for the banquet, since tonight is the celebration of our victory, which was delayed because a certain crazy kid couldn’t wake up, and I’m sure all those guys will be happy if you make them even one dish.”

“…U-Understood!”

Wiping away my tears and staggering under the weight of the basket, I stood up, propping myself up with one hand on my staff to support my weight. If there was anything I can do, I wouldn’t stay idle.

“I don’t think I can make much of anything, but I’ll do my best!”

With that said, I hurried back the way I came.

“…I took that back, you aren’t crazy, kid, you’re a goddamn lunatic.”

I heard a venomous voice behind me and chuckled. While we didn’t exactly get off to a nice start, he wasn’t as bad of a person I thought he was. I turned around and said in a loud voice so that the thoughts that poked out of my chest would be heard properly.

“I’m sorry for the for the horrible things I said to you the other day! You are much nicer than I thought!”

“(chokes) W-What…?!”

For some reason, the basket of vegetables slipped out of his hands and made a loud noise.

I turned on my heel with a smile on my face. My steps were much, much lighter.

Well, now that I’ve made a promise, what shall I make? I should talk to Mrs. Miranda about it. I headed home with a few ideas in my mind of what I could make with the vegetables I had on hand.

And so the heaping pile of potato salad I made for dinner was received much better than expected and disappeared into everyone’s stomachs with great success.

A little ahead of me, the two of them kept on cutting through the goblin horde. Perhaps frightened by the difference in strength, the goblins gradually, gradually retreated, opening the distance between them and me, who was waiting somewhat behind them.

Mumbling, I chanted in my mouth a whisper.

Done. Waiting for my chance… Now!

“’Consecrated Field’!”

I struck the small figures that jumped at me from behind with the magic I had just completed.

The goblins had penetrated deep into the area of effect and fell to the ground, unable to raise their voices and groaning in pain and discomfort.

“Don’t let them get away!”

“Of course!”

Immediately, Reiji-san, who should have been at the frontline, slipped in between me and them… the goblins, and slaughtered them one after another.

The goblins, after confirming that the surprise attack had failed, immediately turned around and fled, with Saul-niisama in hot pursuit, sometimes sending out restraining magic as he ripped them apart.

We couldn’t afford to miss this chance. They were aiming to kidnap me, a “female”… and we were going to turn the table on them.

Using myself as a bait, we dared to create an opening and annihilate those who were lured out. The strategy we took worked, and we were steadily increasing our results.

Well, actually…

A little while ago.

““No way!””

The two of them firmly rejected my proposal.

“B-But we can probably deal with them in one go with this…”

“I know, but I can’t afford to put you in danger.”

“Agreed, it’s the last thing I want to happen.”

My proposal was simple… using me as a bait.

From the engagements with the goblins so far, I knew for a fact that they were targeting me… in other words, a female. I didn’t want to know the reason for that, though.

The mercenary company we were working with consisted of mostly men, and the only woman we saw was Philias-san. And the goblins, under their advanced leadership, were cleverly concealing themselves and launching surprise attacks, and I thought that if this continued, they would eventually wear down our allies. The longer this went on, the worse it’d become for us.

More than anything else, the sun was slowly setting now… soon the goblins would be at their active time of day, and that’s why I made that proposal…

It was immediately met with strong opposition from both of them, and here we are.

“I admit that’s a good plan, but…”

“Isn’t it going to be terrifying to you?”

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry.”

Yes, I was remarkably free of anxiety right now. Because.

“I trust you two will protect me no matter what happens, am I right?”

I smiled with unquestioning trust at the two, who were now back in their element.

“…You know, I’m never going to be fully on board with this plan.”

Nii-sama, still slumped over, blurted out as he added something onto the paper.

“Neither do I… But it’s frustrating that there’s no doubt it worked.”

Reiji-san looked at the addition with a difficult expression on his face. What we were looking at is a copy of a map of this neighborhood that was borrowed from the mayor.

“Here, here, and here. These are the locations of the prior engagements…”

“And this is the direction they’re running off to.”

The map, on which we had written down the results of several previous attempts, indicated each time where we had been engaged and the direction in which the goblins had attempted to flee after their failed surprise attack. After several iterations of gathering information, we were able to confirm the direction.

“…This must be the place.”

“I think so too.”

“It’s probably right.”

Three fingers pointed to the same single spot. Their escape route led them to… one of the pioneer villages in the area, now abandoned with no inhabitants. There was also a small mine site there where ore could be mined for a time, although everything soon dried up, so they should have no trouble finding a place to hide.

“Curses! It REEKS of gob smell in here… Ack?!”

On the way to the objective location, the sound of people’s angry voices drifted in on the wind. At the same time, there was the sound of something hard crashing against each other and the noise of a struggle.

“Did you hear that?”

“Yeah, looks like they’re already engaged… at a great disadvantage, too.”

…We were supposed to scout the main camp over there and wait until the rest of our forces arrived, but this changed things a lot.

As a battle broke out in the abandoned village, Saul-niisama, who’s quick-footed, carried me, who didn’t have much in term of mobility, as we rushed to the front.

We hid behind a tree so as not to be noticed by those who were engaged in battle. Ahead of us, we saw a mercenary with a bow, who seemed to be protecting his two sword-wielding wounded comrades.

“…That guy looks familiar.”

Saul-niisama muttered grumpily.

Yes, the archer with ash-gray hair was the very person who had grabbed me by the chest back in the mess hall. And ahead of him were goblins with bows camped out on the roof, and…

“What the hell… that’s a High Goblin.”

“It must be the leader…”

They were not just dealing with goblins. A higher species of goblin… enhanced by witchcraft, with blood-red shading all over its body and a steel-colored muscular body, probably larger than Reiji-san’s.

The two of them turned to look at me, a “What should we do?” question visible in their eyes.

To be honest, we didn’t exactly have the nicest start with them that morning. But the way the archer protects his comrades with his back to them, desperately shooting arrows to the bitter end, it’s…

“Let’s save them. We’re allies.”

Without hesitation, I said it out loud.

“…Gotcha. What’s the plan?”

I’m sure that they had no doubt that I’d answer that way, and so we immediately began discussing strategy.

“I’ll take the archers on the roof.”

“Need some help?”

“Not really, it’s not that big of a deal.”

Saul-niisama smiled wryly. He unsheathed his sword, flapping the wings on his back and releasing himself from the yoke of gravity.

“I’m already used to it. Even with the system assist, I’ve moved my body around a lot. Once I get the hang of it, it’s easy. I’ll leave the High Goblin to you.”

He didn’t ask whether we could do it or not.

With a swing of the wings on his back, he soared high into the sky.

“…That guy never ceases to amaze me. Alright, let’s go, Iris. I’ve got your back.”

“Yes!”

We, too, jumped out from behind the trees where we had been hiding. Reiji-san was quickly getting ahead of me at an unbelievable speed. And Saul-niisama had already reached the top of the first building.

…He’s really wonderful. Saul-niisama was completely different from the one crying into my chest on that night, freely flying through the air and attacking the goblins on the roof.

The goblins, unprepared for the sudden and unexpected attack, were kicked to the ground before they could react.

I looked back down and saw that Reiji-san had already reached the abnormal form of the High Goblin and had begun to engage it.

Reiji-san deflected the blow from the High Goblin’s giant sword just in time, causing it to bounce off its original trajectory, slamming into the empty ground beside him.

“?!?!?!?!?!”

The leader’s eyes were black and white at the presence of Reiji-san, who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.

“Yo, looks like ‘mere goblins’ are what’s kicking your ass right now. Mind if I lent you a hand?”

“You! You’re the brats from earlier…!”

The mercenaries grew agitated for a moment, but then they remembered their current situation and dropped back, dragging the injured men with them. And I’d finally caught up.

“Let me heal you, ‘Area Heal’!”

As soon as the staff touched the ground, a soft light enveloped their injured bodies, quickly erasing their injuries.

“Woah…”

“Amazing…”

In fact, the wounds were closing so fast that they were at a loss for words… I suppose I should learn some common sense about the healing arts in this world after all of this calms down. But now it’s not the time for that.

“If any of you can stand up, please do. Reiji-san will hold back the enemy leader… so please, protect me.”

Enemy shadows were pouring out from the surrounding area. With Saul-niisama and Reiji-san having their hands full, I was not capable of defending myself. So I asked the mercenaries to do it.

They were amused, though, because they didn’t expect me to bow to them that honestly.

“…Tch. I’m just doing this for the job, not you.”

The archer from this morning was the first to make his move. He fired an arrow at the closest opponent. Then he fired his next arrow without even checking that the first one that went straight between its eyes. I couldn’t help but gawk at his archery skills.

“…Thank you very much!”

“Now you’re just noisy, kid! It’s common sense to protect the healer on the battlefield, stupid!”

The arrow that was released with his angry voice shot through another goblin’s brow again.

“Power”. “Haste”. “Concentrate”. “Regenerate”.

Loaded with every conceivable enhancement magic I could think of, they promptly eliminated the enemies approaching me, amazed at their own increased abilities.

I was out of breath from the continuous support, and a small bottle was quickly offered to me.

“It’s a nuisance when a healer runs out of magic. Drink it up.”

He bluntly shoved it to me, then quickly readied another arrow and shot down another goblin closing on us.

…They must be pretty good at their job, I thought, as I drank from something that looked like a magic potion.

He opened his mouth to speak again as he continued to shoot arrows next to me.

“We’re the new recruits in this company.”

I was a little surprised at his words. Walter-san and the others must have some pretty high standards if even the recruits were this skilled.

“I was pretty cocky back in my hometown, you know. No one there could match me in hunting. I thought I could beat anyone with a bow. But when I got carried away and enlisted in this company, I found that I was just as good as anyone else here. Somehow I passed the entrance exam, but inside I was rotting the whole time.”

He continued his monologue as he nonchalantly fired his arrows.

“…Sorry for badmouthing your companions earlier. And also for scaring you. You are afraid of men, aren’t you?”

Just like that, he blurted out an apology. I looked at him with a pout.

“The name’s Weiss.”

After telling me this, he moved away from me without a second thought.

“Hey, where did you run off to, bastard?!”

“Just shut up and focus!”

Noisily, they returned to the line of battle. Even from behind, I could see his ears turning reddish, and I couldn’t help but smile despite being in a place like this. I felt something warm filling my heart.

Reiji-san, on the other hand, was showing no danger in the fight.

The high goblin seemed to have the advantage in physical ability, especially in strength and instantaneous force, but Reiji-san, on the other hand, was completely outmaneuvering his opponent.

Reiji-san, who was originally the heir to a sword dojo, received a lot of training when he was still a kid, so much that he often came to me complaining about it. Back in Japan, I could follow his movements with my eyes, but after coming here, it’s impossible for me to do that after he gained a new body with extraordinary physical capabilities.

The High Goblin, too, was hardly able to keep up with him, and Reiji-san continued to attack it almost unilaterally.

“Damn, this asshole is nothing but tanky as shit!”

Reiji-san swore. The sword he’s currently using, which is an intermediate-level piece of equipment, couldn’t cut through the iron-like skin of the High Goblin. He could always have used the “Sword of Destruction Arsley”, but he’s hesitant because of the side effects.

At the very least, his attack managed to leave cracks on the skin of the High Goblin, and when he switched to repeatedly stabbing at the crack, the “Consecrated Weapon” enchant sent shock through it, making a violent sound and staggering the huge body of the High Goblin.

After a good dozen or so of those stabs, the wound on the High Goblin’s abdomen cracked open, and blood gushed from it.

A fierce look appeared on Reiji-san’s face. The High Goblin took an unsteady stance and hastily swung down its huge sword, while Reiji-san prepared to deflect the blow.

CLANG!

With an inhumanly loud sound of metal crashing against each other, the High Goblin’s sword flew upward. An opening, albeit momentary, was created.

A bluish-white light illuminated Reiji-san’s sword as he took a stance for a stabbing attack.

But the High Goblin was starting to move again. Its sword, which had somehow managed to regain its stance, was brought down from a great height…

Now!

“Solid Ray!!”

Its swing was blocked by my barrier of light, and with its arm stuck in that position, the High Goblin was now effectively defenseless.

“You’re already dead!!”

Reiji-san pierced his sword, which was covered with a blue, shining fighting spirit, deeply into the High Goblin’s body at godlike speed. The enormous amount of fighting energy from the sword rushed into its soft interior, and no matter how hard the surface skin is, there is no way to resist the explosion that bursts from within. Its huge body convulsed, blood streamed from its eyes and nose, and it collapsed to the ground with a resounding thud.

Just before it did, Reiji-san made a quick swing of his sword to shake off the blood and gore, and Saul-niisama, who had just swept away all the archers on the roof, swooped down beside him. I ran up to them and held up my hands, each hand on either side of mine, and our hands overlapped with a clatter.

“Alright boys, all that’s left is cleaning up the stragglers, let’s go!”

Weiss-san and the others, who said they were new recruits, had already begun chasing the fleeing enemies, hoping to take down the remaining goblins. Yes, our job here isn’t over yet. We, too, began to follow them.

…Something felt off.

Even though their leader was no more, their escape did not seem at all to be desperate… no way!

“Wait a moment!”

A chill ran down my spine. I activated “Eagle Eye”, a vision enhancement magic.

…There it was.

Somehow, I managed to see something in the distance, something very huge that had not been there a moment ago. It looked familiar. I think it’s a raid boss that’d been around since the very first level cap… Around it, in the trees, on the cliffs, small figures are stirring that should not have been there a moment ago. It’s like…

“…A feigned retreat?!”

The name of the tactics in my memory came out of my mouth.

“What?!”

“Holy shit, back off…!”

Two of the mercenaries had also noticed the new enemy presences and started panicking.

A trap that is completed when the decoy draws the opponent into harm’s way. The goblins could even devise such a tactic?!

But we’re one step too late, and even those of us in the rear had already stepped into range…!

“Ruuuuuuun!!”

My cries echoed in vain.

A gigantic goblin, four meters in height… which was actually a raid boss back in the game, the “Goblin General”… as soon as it swung its hand down, all of the goblins around it made some kind of wind noise all at once.

We looked up at the sky and saw countless little shadows… countless arrows raining down on us.

Instantly, Saul-niisama held me close and thrust his shield onto the ground. Likewise, Reiji-san held up his greatsword like a shield to hide me.

…A few steps ahead of us, the mercenaries were about to expose themselves to the rain of arrows, with nothing to protect them.

…Once again, lives were about to disappear before my eyes. But this time, it’s not even the enemies’, they were people, one of whom I finally had a decent conversation with a while ago…

Before I could think, my body, my mouth, was moving.

Until now, we had been saving “Protection”, which had a long recast time, only for me, and “Wide Protection” wasn’t used. Reiji-san and Saul-niisama had been fighting without any cover this whole time.

But now…

That which rejects all malice, the light protecting us all, manifest yourself…”

The chanting, different from that of the system normally used in this world, flowed easily out of my mouth.

“……Huh?!”

“Stop, don’t use ‘that’!”

“…’Wide Protection’!”

The chanting was completed entirely by reflex, as a result of my usual habit of memorizing it in my body so that I could use it on the spur of the moment. Immediately after, countless arrows rained down on us. Under normal circumstances, it is a saturation attack that one would not expect to survive so well.

But not a single one of us was injured by the arrows. Because a thin film of glowing white light covered all of us.

The world was enveloped in a shining golden glimmer. Countless feathers fluttered in the air in a blessed light enveloping all living things.

Yes… this is the Lightwing’s special magic, which only I could use, and only when I had my wings out.

“What the?!”

With shocked expressions and voices, the mercenaries turned around to look at the light behind them.

At last, I’d exposed myself to the public.

I felt uneasy at the thought of having done something irreversible.

“Are you kidding me…”

“The Lightwing…?!”

Their gazes were directed at the dazzling, shining wings on my back.

Part 2

Iris

Despite being exposed to a hail of arrows, everyone was unharmed.

It was only a matter of time before they turned toward me and saw the unusual light on my back.

“What the hell are those wings?!”

“I’ll… I’ll explain later, now come with me if you want to live… Hurry!”

They finally came to their senses and rushed toward me awkwardly at the sound of my half screamed voice, which I barely managed to squeeze out while being impatient with the wings of light I had exposed to the surroundings.

“Frankly, I don’t feel comfortable helping you guys… ‘Force Field’!”

Starting from Nii-sama’s shield, a barrier appeared around us. Immediately afterward…

“Kyah?!”

“Kuh… This is really scary up close, isn’t it…?”

Countless arrows rained down on the barrier violently. The sight of the arrows bouncing off one after another just a dozen or so centimeters from the tip of my nose was irresistibly terrifying.

While we were able to defend against the arrows at the moment, my and Saul-niisama’s magical power couldn’t last forever, and it would run out in the not-too-distant future. It’s still more than a minute until I could use “Wide Protection” again, and I’m not sure Nii-sama’s magical power, which was rapidly decreasing due to the intense attack, will last until then. Not to mention…

Our fears were soon realized. The leader-type High Goblins, who had been standing by the General’s side, began to walk toward us. Of course, there was no way they would wait for us to run out of magic, and their hardened and reinforced skin probably wouldn’t be affected by the rain of arrows, unlike ours.

“After the next rain of arrows stops, it’s all or nothing time. Saul, take Iris and retreat first.”

“Reiji-san?!”

“…Understood.”

“Nii-sama, why?!”

I couldn’t stand it any longer, so I raised my voice, but their eyes did not waver.

“Don’t worry, I’m not going to die. As long as you’re safe, you can always put me back together, right?”

“But…!”

Reiji-san patted my head, perhaps trying to reassure me. I looked around and see Weiss-san and the other two nodding their heads in agreement with him, though with a hint of sadness in their eyes.

This is the right choice,

Painfully, I tried to nod… but that moment never came.

“Second squad, open fire on the enemy right flank!”

Suddenly, a female voice reached my ears. From the forest behind me… Philias-san gave the order to the mercenaries dressed like magicians accompanying her, and several fireballs were released into the group of archers on the right.

They landed with a thunderous roar.

If I recall correctly, they were “Lava Bomb”, an intermediate-level magic. Some of them landed right in the middle of the enemy line on the right side of the cliff, turning the dozens of goblin archers into cinders, and melt the surrounding bright red from the high heat. It was soon followed by a volley of fire arrows, further disrupting the enemy formation, and starting fires one after another.

“First squad, ready to charge down the enemy left flank! Everyone on me, we have a princess to rescue!!”

The confusion hadn’t abated when a group of six armed men, led by Zeltis-san, carrying two long swords, drove deep and deep into the enemy position on the left flank like a sharp wedge. All the goblins trying to intercept were mowed down by the onrushing tide, and even those who escaped were quickly exterminated by the second squad, who was closely following the first from behind.

One of the enemy vanguards had been annihilated.

“Awesome… so this is the strength of the real-deal mercenaries who make a living by fighting, huh…”

The situation was reversed in the blink of an eye, and Reiji-san, who was in a posture to protect me, muttered to me in dismay. Before I knew it, the rain of arrows aiming at us had become sparse.

“…Alright, we’ve caused enough of a ruckus here. The enemy leader should be coming here soon enough. Everyone, fall back and regroup!”

At the sound of Zeltis-san, who returned with ease after cutting and clawing his way through the spearheads of the enemy, Saul-niisama, Reiji-san and everyone else, including the mercenary recruits, came to their senses and retreated, with me still being held by Saul-niisama.

“Off you go then, brother. Lenny, Diaz, prepare your flashiest magic. The rest of you are authorized to use explosive arrows… There’s no need to aim properly, we just have to intimidate and distract them! Now get ready!”

The three mercenaries with bows behind Philias-san then fired arrows, each with bulging tip. The arrows flew in an irregular trajectory, barely reaching the enemy lines, right in front of the archer goblins…

Once again, there was a thunderous roar.

The arrows exploded upon impact, spewing flames everywhere, and the normal goblins, who were by nature cowardly, began fleeing in confusion. The rain of arrows aiming at us stopped completely.

As we were about to leave, fireballs exploded again behind us, swallowing the field of vision between us and the goblins in flame and dust. Philias-san, already escaped using the dust as a smokescreen, waved her hand toward us, her tied up blue hair wagging like a tail.

“It’s good to see you alright, Iris-chan and the two handsome companions! Ah, almost forgot about you, brother!”

“You totally did it on purpose… Well, thanks for covering me anyway, Philias, bye!”

“Hey, wait for me, idiot!”

As usual, we were left with a stormy pair who seemed to have no tension in their banters even in such a situation.

“My beautiful princess, I’ve come to save you from this crisis as promised, if you could give me the honor of- Ouch!!”

Zeltis-san took my hand (I was still in Saul-niisama’s arms, by the way) and tried to put his lips on the back of it again, but Reiji-san, for some reason, slapped his hand away with a grim expression on his face.

In the midst of this somehow awkward atmosphere, a carefree voice could be heard.

“Hello there. Looks like you’ve been doing much better in the short time I’ve been away. When I was still a new recruit like you, I broke out in cold sweat all the time.”

The person who said that… Walter-san turned his gaze toward our back.

“I think I can guess what happened. Did these new recruits carelessly started the battle by going where they weren’t supposed to go?”

Weiss-san and the other recruits, who had not said a word since a few minutes ago, stare at Walter-san and clenched their fists in frustration.

“In your haste after success, you broke off and charged in on your own. If you did end up putting your allies in danger, you’re going to be heavily punished…”

“…We have no objection. It was all our own fault.”

As if driven by remorse, Weiss-san spoke up on behalf of them.

“Um, they…”

As I fearfully tried to vouch for them, my head was suddenly rubbed by a large hand.

“I know what you’re trying to say. By the looks on these guys’ face, it looks like they’ve had a valuable setback, so they’ll live to see another. Don’t worry, I ain’t kicking them out of the company just yet.”

Everyone around me was relieved to hear him say that with a broad grin on his face.

“But I’m not letting them off that easily either. Your punishment shall be peeling vegetables for a week! Got it?!”

“Guh?!”

“Oh, no…”

They immediately became teary-eyed. When it comes to the meals of a mercenary company, the amount of work involved must be very hard.

I’m sorry for your loss.

“Well then… That leaves us the matter of ‘these things’ on your back.”

“Ah.”

Uh oh, I could feel Saul-niisama and Reiji-san seething with anger beside me.

“Just let me handle it. I’ve got a promise to keep with an acquaintance of mine, after all. Trust me, I won’t do anything to hurt you.”

“Acquaintance?”

“Easy there. You’ll know the answer in time.”

He gave me a vague smile in response to my question, tapped me lightly on the head, and turned to the mercenaries who had slipped past me and were watching the developments behind me.

“Listen up! These young people have been entrusted to me by a friend of mine, therefore they’re our guests! Especially, this adorable young lady is to be protected at all costs! Naturally, treat this information with the highest confidentiality, you hear?!”

Walter-san’s booming voice echoed throughout the battlefield. The volume of his voice was so loud that I involuntarily covered my ears.

“Anyone dissatisfied with this decision is hereby dismissed from the company after signing a Geas with me that you can’t speak of this matter! Effective immediately!”

Philias-san followed in a matter-of-fact manner.

A Geas is a type of magical contract used for important matter, and if the contents of the contract are violated, a painful punishment will be imposed, depending on the caster’s ability.

In the game era, this magic was not available to players and only appeared by name in the lore.

…No one raised an objection.

They were just checking the condition of their weapons and waiting for the moment when they would clash with the enemy.

“Haha, of course no one would refuse the honor of protecting such a beautiful flower in this sordid place, am I right?!”

“Nice motivation speech there, chief!”

“I mean, who wouldn’t want to fight to protect such a pretty girl at least once?!”

“That’s just how we are! I wouldn’t want such a cute girl being scared of me all the time, you know!”

Zeltis-san’s loud speech was met with equally loud cheer and approval from the mercenaries around us. Saul-niisama, who was still holding me in his arms, and Reiji-san, who was standing as if protecting me from the surroundings, both gawked at the harmonious atmosphere.

These people, they’re going to fight to protect me… protect us.

This made me feel warm in my heart. Everyone in the town had been so kind to me. I couldn’t thank Mrs. Miranda and the mayor enough. But this was the first time people are pledging to protect us. It was like a light that I, no, we, who had spent our lives in this world tormented by anxieties that weighed much heavier than we were aware of, could finally see.

I was moved to tears, and soon Saul-niisama and Reiji-san followed suit.

Walter-san looked at the three of us with kind eyes, as if he was watching over a relative’s child.

After meeting up with the third squad, led by Walter-san, the three of us, Weiss-san and his two comrades formed a squad of our own. Now there’re four squads in total, numbering twenty four people. As we regrouped, a group of goblins led by the Goblin General, who had also regrouped after the chaos, reappeared in front of us. The difference in strength, in terms of simple numbers, was probably five times greater.

“Don’t be too hard on yourself.”

“Yeah, just leave it to us. We ain’t gonna lose.”

The mercenaries passed me from behind as I was assigned to the tail of the formation as a full-time healer and support, each of them verbally encouraged us and headed for the frontline. So let me do all I can to repay them. Fortunately, there was no longer anything that needed to be covered up here.

Six golden wings appeared on my back as I renewed my resolve.

Everyone around me gasped in awe.

The all-encompassing light, bestowing knowledge… Manifest yourself!

A halo appeared with a shimmering geometric pattern, centered on my wrists.

“’Spell Extension’! Now, everyone!”

Spells flowed from my mouth one after another.

“Strength Enhancement”

“Instantaneous Force”

“Accelerated Reflexes”

“Heroic Fortitude”

And finally “Consecrated Weapon”.

The strengthened support spells I activated one after another, as they passed through the halo of my hands, were diffused as if looking through a kaleidoscope and spread throughout the battlefield, increasing the mercenaries’ physical strength.

“Oh, this feels great!”

“With you by my side, I don’t think I will lose!”

One after another, the mercenaries rushed out with reliable smiles on their faces and light steps.

“O Princess, this sword shall bring you victory! Please watch after me!”

“Just forget what this idiot says already! But rest easy… and leave it to your big sis, alright?”

Especially these twins, who ran off with such vigor that they left everyone else behind. They were really strong, as I felt earlier. Both their current leg strength and dexterity were on par with Reiji-san and Saul-niisama…!

The leader-type High Goblins had entered combat with Zeltis-san and Philias-san, who were leading the charge. Following them, the crony High Goblins and the rest of the mercenaries were about to engage each other.

And as expected, arrows started raining down from above them. The goblins were willing to shoot even their own allies, thinking that the High Goblins would only get itchy at most.

That which rejects all malice, the light protecting us all, manifest yourself… Wide Protection!!

The light that spread like a ripple across the battlefield centered on me envelops my surrounding allies as a protective coating of light. The next instant, arrows came down upon us in a downpour, however…

It’s the goblins who’s going to bleed.

The goblins had expected to see us lying on the ground covered in blood, but there were none. On the contrary, several High Goblins were pierced by the blades of the mercenaries, who took advantage of their carelessness to charge through the rain of arrows, and crumbled to the ground.

“…! (pants heavily)”

The series of spell I cast greatly reduced my magical power, and I breathed heavily, propping up my staff to support my exhausted body. Then, Walter-san appeared from behind me and offered me a small bottle of potion.

“You did well. In the meantime, thanks to you, young lady, we have the upper hand in the war, so rest while you still can.”

I took the potion, which was opened and handed to me, and swallowed its contents frantically. There was still work for me to do, I didn’t have the free time to sit here all worn out… I still didn’t have the experience of supporting a front line in a situation where I am the only healer.

“…Well then, I’ll be on my way now. Philias will be in charge of the rest as planned.”

Walter-san, along with only a few escorts, all wearing some kind of camouflage cloak, headed toward the enemy backline… where the goblin mages maintaining the support magic were located. It is a very dangerous role as they cut deep into enemy territory… but they all had a certain confidence in their eyes, and none of recklessness.

“There’s no telling what tricks these things have up their sleeves… Sincerely, stay vigilant, I’ll see you later.”

With that, they ran out without a sound and disappeared into the forest.

…Even at this very moment, the enemy was closing in. I sensed among them, a strong bloodlust, and a spine-chilling bestial desire hidden within. The “Goblin General” was looking in my direction. It’s only natural that I would catch its eye, since I had been scattering my support magic with such flamboyance. I don’t think I need to explain the bestial desire, it’s for my own good.

The feeling of being locked on by the enemy made my heart throb. Even though it was the earliest raid bosses in the game, this was a reality that operates by different laws than the game, and we were not yet as capable as we had been then. We couldn’t afford to let our guard down for even a moment.

As my immediate escort, Reiji-san, who was waiting a short distance in front of me, drew his greatsword and Saul-niisama held up his shield.

This battle, had only just begun.

Part 3

Zeltis

A hail of arrows loomed in front of us. It was a chilling order to be told to charge head-on into it. But the protective magic we wore on our bodies certainly had its effect, and we took the fortuitous chance of finishing off a few of the higher species on the other side, who had been caught off guard, with our first surprise attack, and the tide was now tilting in our favor.

These higher species, who would normally take several people to finish them off with difficulty, were torn to shreds like paper, and the enemy line was broken.

The scene around us was as if it was being played in slow-motion. I wonder how much our physical capabilities had been enhanced, but what would normally have been a tough fight, was easily overturned.

The role of our first squad was to hit the enemy as quickly and hard as possible. For this reason, the elites of the company were chosen for this role, and I was honored to be entrusted with its leadership as its cut-throat leader.

First, we took the head of the enemy commander. The commander of the other side was, as far as I can tell, the Goblin General, an oddly shaped giant that appeared very rarely in decades and was treated as a disaster among people, and the High Goblins serving as its entourage… that was how they were called, anyway. Two of these things were in command of the enemy units deployed on the right and left flank, respectively… and I’d deal with one of them.

From there, I took the initiative and cut deeper into the enemy line, and the others would break open the cracks further. As usual, this time was no different. But there was nothing that can stop me now. With the blessing of the “Princess’” support magic, my body felt incredible, and as I moved in to engage one of the enemy leaders, my comrades were already tearing apart the enemy rank and file troops.

More importantly, the thought of that lovely princess with her divine wings fluttering in the background, praying for our victory and safety, lifted the spirits of this usually grimy male-dominated company.

And above all, the existence of her healing arts, which was, to put it bluntly, out of this world. Normally, healing arts were used to enhance someone’s regeneration ability and heal their wounds over time when out of combat. However, her healing light immediately restored us to a combat-ready state, even if we were injured, without even having to leave the frontline.

People with such power did in fact, appear from time to time, but they were usually revered as “Saint” or “Saintess” and were usually placed under the Church’s protection, but her healing arts were still a league above theirs. And she could even apply it to multiple at the same time from a remote location.

She had been strictly ordered not to push herself too hard because she was showing signs of fatigue, but her presence alone allowed us to have some mental leeway, which was a great advantage over the usual safety margins that are inevitably required to avoid being incapacitated on the battlefield, and as a result we were eliminating the enemies at a much faster pace, reducing the injuries we might have gotten.

“Kuku, kuhahahaha!!”

I felt my face relaxing in pleasure, but I couldn’t help it. Yes, I’m very happy right now.

It was only by chance that I saw her that day, when I was still very young, in a room in a secluded place.

I happened to sneak into the room, which my father had strictly told me to stay away from, out of mischievousness and a bit of rebelliousness due to the period I was going through, and was just staring at her mysterious profile, which did not seem to belong to this world, illuminated by the blue moonlight.

The well-defined profile of that Highborn girl, despite her young age, was as immobile as a doll in these circumstances. It’s hard to believe that she is just a village girl, and if you touch her, she looks as if she would fleetingly melt and disappear. I don’t think that’s the word I would use for a young girl, but it was just so beautiful.

On this day, for the first time in my life, while I was on the path to becoming a knight, chronically thinking that I was going to take over my parents’ house, I wanted to serve this person of my own volition, and I did so.

I was told that my father had kidnapped her from somewhere. The moment I heard this, I was unable to forgive my father for selfishly trying to poison a young girl with his venom, and from that moment on, I began to act out of a childish sense of justice.

A snitch to my uncle, who was a knight of integrity. Taking advantage of the fact that I wasn’t suspected because I was a child, I gathered the necessary information one by one and passed it in confidence, some of which caused my father to lose his title. Yes, I sold my parents for her sake without any hesitation.

I might have lost my status, my promised future, everything, but if it freed her from bondage and made her less of a plaything to others, that would be fine by me.

It was later discovered that her identity was truly that of the princess I was supposed to serve. I wept, too, at the fact that the road to becoming her knight was already closed to me, branded as the son of the man who had tried to plunder it, but I still had no regrets.

After losing my status, I turned to the sword skills I had cultivated up to that point, and joined the ranks of mercenaries with my sister, who for some reason went out of her way to accompany me. After repeatedly moving from one battle to the next, Captain Walter recognized my talents and took me into his company, which I’d stayed in ever since.

I had already given up on her, thinking that I would never meet her again. However, by chance, in a town where I happened to stop by, that dream, which should have been rotting away, suddenly knocked on the door of reality.

Ah, I must be on cloud nine right now.

Her appearance remained the same even after seven years? Barely an issue.

She was the supposedly extinct Lightwing race? Oh please, I’d wish to pledge my sword to such a person!

The Captain was considering her protection, so we should be walking the same path for now. However, should the paths diverge, I was willing to abandon everything again for her sake, if she wished so.

My childhood dream, which should have faded into unreality, was now revived before my eyes, and nothing shall stand between me and my happiness!

“Curse the misfortune that befalls you, for you face me in combat!”

Feeding off my overflowing thoughts of loyalty, a fierce fighting spirit rushes to my right sword and becomes so cold that it brought down frost on the surroundings, and with my flaming left sword, I repelled the enemy’s blow… the High Goblin was now awkwardly exposing its bare torso.

No matter how hard the skin was, if it kept getting scraped off, it would eventually be penetrated. All this time I had been preparing for this moment.

“Espinas Azul!!” (TL: “Blue Thorns” in Spanish)

My sword thrust deep into the enemy’s flesh to the base without any resistance.

“…Scatter!”

In the next instant, all the fighting spirit in the sword turned into ice ivy inside the enemy’s body, tearing its body to shreds from inside out and leaving a grisly flower of ice in the aftermath.

There was no time to bask in the afterglow of victory. The quicker I get the job done, the less work she has to do.

I kicked the ground and ran toward the enemy leader on the other side of the battlefield, who was crossing sword with my sister, Philias…

(Narrator: Little did Zeltis know that his technique is very similar in nature to the one used by the one accompanying the girl he called his beloved princess to slaughter the same enemy just a while ago.)

Philias

“Ahaha… You’re a tough nut to crack, you know what?”

I let out a grumble as I crossed sword with the enemy leader. After all, it was also assuming command while holding the other in check like me. I even wanted to praise it.

Fortunately, I could still deal with my opponent so long as I was committed to staying on my feet.

Originally, we, the second squad, were a unit of mainly wizards and archers who were intended to cover our allies, and we borrowed several members of the Captain’s third squad, who were acting alone, to maintain the front while the second squad was allowed to cover the rest of the battlefield.

Yes, our job was to stall the enemies. We didn’t have to win, if we could hold them off here so that our enemies didn’t run off to somewhere else until my brother’s first squad tore through the enemy left flank and got to us…

“Philias! I’ll take care of it, you go back to the princess!”

“So fast?! You’re done with that side already?!”

This idiot brother of mine swooped in and started slashing at my opponent like a strong gale. The enemy left flank, which had been my brother’s responsibility, had lost its leader and was beginning to crumble into tatters, and my brother’s men were in charge of clearing it out. From what I could tell, it should have taken a little longer, but wasn’t this too fast?!

But when I looked at the joyful color that perhaps only I would understand on his normally calm but unreadable profile, I understood what’s going on.

He’s… he’s overjoyed. After longing for it all this time, he was finally reunited with his “Princess”.

I could picture in my mind’s eye that little girl, so expressive and lovely, so different from when I saw her only at a glance many years ago.

I, too… wanted to protect that girl. If it were that cold and expressionless girl, I wouldn’t be able to protect her at any cost like my brother, but if it were that expressive girl now, I would want to protect her too. Her anxiously shaking eyes were like those of a small animal, which made my cute-loving heart flutter violently, and to tell the truth, I wanted to hug her and rub my cheek against her soft and smooth cheek at that time in the mess hall, but I held back with all my might.

For some reason I couldn’t understand, that girl aroused the desire to protect from others. I had a faint suspicion about that, but I also thought it’s okay because she seemed like a good, kind-hearted girl, not a bad one. It would be like wanting to protect a small kitten, yes.

Oops, I must concentrate on the task at hand. I noticed that the arrows from the rear had already stopped. Apparently, the Captain had already taken care of that side. I’m sure he would join us soon.

“Second squad, provide covering fire for the first squad, then join them after cleaning up the stragglers! I’ll go with the third squad to take care of our guests! Let’s go!”

Under my command, arrows and magic were launched against the enemies who tried to chase after the retreating third squad. After confirming that they had safely retreated, I followed behind them and ran.

Walter

“…Phew, is that all you’ve got, goblins?”

I look around at the enemy rear-guard unit, which had stopped moving. Once we had penetrated this far, they were not a serious opponent.

In addition to the goblin mages, we took out most of the archers in the enemy backline. Now we could go back to check on these kids…

“…Hmm? What on earth is that?”

An unnatural object peeked out from the crude costume of one of the enemy’s corpses. When I picked it up, it felt like a lump of clay… Oh, no.

“Those beasts, how did they get their hands on this kind of thing…?! Hey, all of you, we’d better move out fast!”

I returned the way I came at full speed, kicking the ground as fast as I could.

I didn’t know who taught the goblins to use “that”, but it had thrown a massive wrench into our battle plan, which was otherwise running smoothly as long as each of us fulfilled our roles.

“Stay safe…!”

Iris

Had I already depleted half of my magic power?

I gasped and struggled to get oxygen into my lungs, trying to regulate my ragged breathing.

I could feel my stomach churning from all the mana potions and water… I’d drunk so much of the stuff that it hurt. My stomach must be bloated right now, it’s a horrible feeling.

I’d been using “Eagle Eye” to get a bird-eye view of the battlefield, and dispatching recovery magic to those about to be injured above a certain threshold. But to have a single person handle such a large number of people at the same time, while maintaining buffs and counting their effect times and recasts, put a huge load on me both magically and physically, and my overworked head was beginning to scream slightly.

If there was solace to be found, it’s the fact that the arrow fire from the enemy rear guard had ceased completely as half of the enemies began to rout. I watched the battle unfolding as I caught my breath.

From the sky above, the “Chain Bind” released by Saul-niisama entangled the Goblin General’s arm, which was about to swing down its huge sword, and stopped it midway. But the chains would only hold it back for a short time.

“Reiji!”

“No need to tell me!”

Reiji-san’s sword, fully charged with his fighting spirit, thrust into the empty, armor-clad torso.

“Damn, that’s still not enough?!”

The released fighting spirit became an explosion that shattered a piece of the Goblin General’s armor and burnt the skin beneath… yes, only the surface. This particular technique of Reiji-san’s was only effective if it caused an internal rupture.

The Goblin General’s face contorted in glee as it saw Reiji-san stiffen in a posture with his greatsword outstretched, and a rocky arm, sword free, was swung down.

“Don’t you dare ignore me!!”

With a yell, Saul-niisama dove from above and landed beside Reiji-san like an arrow, then immediately unleashed a sword flash at a sharp angle.

“Perish!! ‘Lightning Vapor’…!!”

Dazzling lightning sparked from the tip of his sword, scorching the Goblin General’s entire body, causing it to fall back a few steps.

…?

Did the Goblin General just… use itself as a shield to protect the goblins behind it from Saul-niisama’s lightning attack?

“…Wow, not only are those two not budging an inch, but they’re also pushing that thing back somehow?”

I was brought back to my senses by the voice of one of the mercenaries who was serving as my escort.

Yes, the two of them were switching places at a dizzying pace, alternating their attacks without pause to fill in the gaps, and slowly pushing back that huge body.

…However, their opponent’s durability was still fearsome, and no matter how many attacks they made, they had yet to strike an effective blow. Our task was to keep this enemy mastermind, the most dangerous being on this battlefield, sewn up here. In the meantime, Zeltis-san and Philias-san would sweep the surrounding area before finally joining the fight themselves. In the game, it was a raid boss, and this existence, which appears only once every decade or so, was a threat that required a force of that magnitude to deal with in this world.

Weiss-san’s arrows shot through the goblins who were looking for an opening behind the tattered General… The reason those two were able to concentrate on the General was probably because the enemy goblins in the background were not able to make any unnecessary distractions. I thanked him only from the bottom of my heart so as not to interfere with their role.

Perhaps realizing that they were at a disadvantage, the enemy tried to retreat with the rest of the horde. However, the third squad led by Philias-san was already approaching behind them.

“GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!”

The Goblin General, seeing this, roared and slammed the ground with what appeared to be some kind of magic.

“Ugh!”

“Ack!”

In desperation… or at least, that was what I thought at the time, the Goblin General fired off its magic… From the look of it, it resembled “Spark”, an elementary-level spell. Electric shocks spread over a wide area, filled with goblin corpses.

Although not very powerful, it caused the mercenaries’ vanguard, including Reiji-san and Saul-niisama, and even the third squad who was just about to regroup with them, to fall on their knees, numbed by the shock.

“Reiji-san?! Nii-sama?! Let me cure you… ‘Rest Fi-…?”

Since I was outside the area of effect, I started chanting a cure spell to break the paralysis… At that moment, by sheer chance, my eyes met with those of the Goblin General’s… its face was contorted with glee.

“…?! That which rejects all malice, the light protecting us all, manifest yourself… Wide Protection!!

With a fierce and unpleasant premonition running down my spine, I reflexively switched the magic I was using, ended the chanting, and activated the “Wide Protection” I had been saving. This forced spell cancellation and subsequent use of another one violently disrupted my magical power, further diminishing the remaining amount. My vision turned shaky.

“…! All hands, defensive posture! Those with shields, stay in front…”

Philias-san, who noticed my condition, quickly sent out instructions, and the mercenaries immediately reacted and tried to respond, or so I thought.

At the same time, a blue light rose from the bosom of the surrounding goblins’ corpses, their loin cloths, and the backs of their clothes. It looked just like the color of the lighting strike I just saw…

Please, make it in time…!

Without grasping what was happening, I gazed at the spreading light of “Wide Protection”, as if praying. The light enveloped Reiji-san and Saul-niisama, ran through all the mercenaries, and reached the tail end of the mercenary group, where Philias-san was.

It was at that moment…

…A flash that burned my eyes and a deafening boom filled the space immediately in front of me, the place where everyone was fighting.

When the hot wind that was beating all over my body subsided, I finally looked up and saw the debris, still pouring down over and over.

The earth, which had been gouged out and blown away to expose its bare surface, was a completely different sight from what it had been just a few minutes before.

Just now…

“…Explosives?”

Yes, those goblins weren’t merely carrying gunpowder, they were loaded with explosives.

I could only mutter in dismay at the devastation of the surroundings.

“Damage report!”

Perhaps due to the earlier shockwave, Philias-san, who was giving instructions, her voiced seemed so far away.

When the goblins’ remains exploded all of a sudden, most of the mercenaries that was just now rushing in, the third squad led by Philias-san, were engulfed in flames, while Saul-niisama and Reiji-san were hit by a direct blast at even closer range, unable to get out of the way… Yet, they somehow made it in time, apparently because of Nii-sama’s “Invisible Shield” and my own “Wide Protection”.

The ground remained clean only around them, and both of them were still in one pieces, still somehow trying to raise themselves up.

Although we received extensive damage… everyone was still alive!

“I’m going to heal you now-”

“Quit it! Just run!”

As I hurriedly tried to heal everyone, Reiji-san yelled at me with a sharp voice.

The moment I looked up-

“…?!”

A goblin came flying like a cannonball and landed smack dab onto my “Protection”.

The weight and the impact of the speed at which it was thrown by the Goblin General’s muscles caused me to roll several times on the ground before finally coming to a stop.

“……Ugh…”

This was not the time to fall down, there were many people who still needed treatment. I tried to stagger back up on my powerless legs, but couldn’t, because of the mind-numbing shock from the impact, and my sense of equilibrium that had gone haywire after rolling around so much. Still, I had to get up quickly. Everyone was still in danger…

However, as I struggled to raise myself, I heard a clicking noise behind me, as if something like a metallic pin was being removed…

“GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE, KID!!”

“…Eh?”

Weiss-san frantically called out to me.

When I looked up, I saw the goblin that had just been thrown at me, hurriedly taking something out of its clothes and trying to throw it away. In its hand was a white, clay-like object… with a cylindrical thing embedded within, emitting light…

Then the goblin threw that white object away.

“Ah.”

There was nothing left that could be done.

In front of my eyes staring dumbfoundedly, the goblin, who somehow managed to throw away the ominously glowing clay, was swallowed by the explosion and disappeared, like a slow replay.

“FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!”

A shouting figure jumped in.

The feeling of being held by someone and pulled to the ground… I couldn’t make heads or tails of it.

The next moment, a flash of light engulfed me… engulfed us both.

We had been assisting the mercenary company’s strike force in the forest for a while now, and were steadily advancing into the goblins’ territory. It’s not surprising, considering goblins weren’t supposed to be the kind of opponent Reiji-san and Saul-niisama would struggle to fight against.

Still, Saul-niisama’s complexion wasn’t good, and he slowed down his pace.

“Reiji-san, can you still keep going?”

Since I couldn’t say anything to Nii-sama, who would only reply “It’s nothing” when I talked to him, I caught up with Reiji-san, who was walking in the lead, at a short run, and pulled his sleeve lightly to ask him a question.

“Me? Better than the other day, at least.”

He then patted me on the head to reassure me. I was worried that he might be overworking, but it seemed that I was just overreacting.

Looking back, Reiji-san was always the one to take the lead, even when I was still the “me” of before. His large hand placed as usual on my head eased my tension of standing on an unfamiliar battlefield.

“I’ll put what’s important to me first, and make anything that stands in my way pay… Just like old times, eh?”

…For some reason, I couldn’t look directly at Reiji-san because I felt like my heartbeat had intensified, and I hastily looked away.

“I’ll always be there to protect you… That fact will never change.”

“…Nnn? What did you say?”

I couldn’t hear what he said at the end, because his voice was so small that it was basically a whisper.

“…It’s nothing, don’t worry too much about it. Anyway, just rely on your elder, alright?”

“Aren’t we the same age?”

“I was born in May, you were born in October, that makes me five months older than you. Not to mention ‘Iris’ is definitely younger than me!”

I couldn’t help but laugh at Reiji-san’s deadly seriousness and forceful insistence that he was older than me.

“Well then, I’m counting on you, Onii-chan?”

“O-Oh… Leave it to me.”

At my slightly impish way of calling him, Reiji-san turned away and replied curtly, the opposite of what I expected… Did I tease him too much?

Our search continued.

“Saul, back off, you idiot! You’re straying too far from Iris!”

“What, oh crap-”

It was just a small opening. Several goblins jumped in between Saul-niisama and I, as we were slightly separated by the woods. What bad timing… no, it was as if the enemies had been waiting for this exact moment. Reiji-san was busy keeping the enemy archers in check, and he was too far away. Looks like there’s a “leader” commanding these goblins after all.

When I stepped back to distance myself from the signs of the enemies…

“Kyah?!”

A strong impact to the head.

My vision flickered.

I stumbled forward and had to lean my wobbly back on a tree that happened to be growing just beyond where I had fallen.

I felt a streak of viscous liquid dripping from my head. When I touched it in a daze, I felt the liquid sticking to my hand. My hand was stained red with blood.

“Iris! Dammit, run!”

Saul-niisama’s voice felt distant as he released a magic chain to stop the goblins blocking the way and somehow tried to break through.

Even though my “Protection” mitigated some of the direct damage, it was still enough to rip open the skin on my head.

In my flickering vision, I saw a goblin, even smaller than the ones in the surrounding, creeping up behind me, reaching toward me with a grin, as if pleased with its accomplishment.

From there, it was a spur-of-the-moment move.

Without thinking, I reached out my hand. Because of the difference in size, I was slightly quicker to grab the other side’s chest, and…

“Aaaaaaaaaah!!”

…slammed it to the ground with all my strength.

No matter how powerless I was, I couldn’t be as bad as the… child (?) goblin in front of me. Before the little goblin, still frightened by the unexpected counterattack, had any time to resist, I stomped on its chest with the thick sole of my boot, restraining it from trying to get up.

At the edge of my vision, I caught a glimpse of not only the goblins, who had probably underestimated the ease with which they could take me on alone, but also Reiji-san and Saul-niisama, who had frozen up at my sudden action.

Even I myself couldn’t fully comprehend what I was doing now.

What I did know, was “this thing” is after me, and trying to separate me from the two of them. I didn’t even want to know what its purpose was, but there’s no doubt “it” was my enemy. An enemy with whom we couldn’t mutually understand.

“…’Consecrated Field’.”

Even to myself, I think it was a remarkably flat and cold voice. It’s just an elementary magic to ward off monsters, undead and the like. All it could do was making them uncomfortable and refuse to approach, that’s it.

“?!! GY, AAAHHHHHHH!!”

The effect was extraordinary for “it” under my foot, unable to move or escape. At this moment, I was sure that the little creature under my foot was in severe discomfort and suffering terribly.

To us, these marauding creatures were incompatible with ours, and their existence was nothing but “hostility”. Yet, guilt pricked at my chest, and something rose in my throat at the sheer discomfort of my actions. But still.

“’Consecrated Weapon’…!”

The pointy tip of my staff had a faint glow in it.

“Its” eyes looked up at me in fear.

The goblins, who were taken by surprise by my sudden assault, began to move in a panic.

My hands never stopped shaking.

But I firmly grasped at my staff.

I put all my weight on the child goblin’s mouth, which was about to scream in terror, and drove the sharp, pointy tip of my staff into it.

“GYAAAAAAAYYYY!!”

The grating voice stung my ears.

My hands felt a horrible sensation.

“Its” jaws were shattered, and it screamed inaudibly, spitting blood and flailing about in a violent agitation, hurting itself just as much as I did.

…I hate this.

I don’t want to do this!

Because this creature is so pitiful, so painful.

I’m scared.

I want to release it from my restraint and forgive it already.

I want to heal its wounds and send it back to the forest to tell it not to do this anymore.

But!

“AAAAAAAAAH!!”

I shouted to shake off my hesitation and swung my staff down again.

Even though I was powerless, my “Consecrated Weapon” struck the target with a shock every time my staff hit it. Each time I swung down my staff, something new shattered with a soggy sound and transmitted an unpleasant sensation to my hands. And so with each swing, the resistance gradually weakened underfoot. A scream that gradually stopped.

Extinguished. A life, extinguished under my foot, by my own hand, not another.

My vision was nearly impaired by tears and my throat was parched with fear.

This, was the path those two had been on.

The only reason I had been spared from it was that I “wasn’t cut out for it”, that’s all, I had pushed this pain onto those two and kept my hands clean until now!

Then one goblin, unable to resist, jumped out and attacked me. This goblin, with tears in its eyes and attacking me half-crazed, must have been the family of this young goblin at my feet.

…My “Protection” was still durable enough. I braced for impact.

Just before the blade reached me, the goblin that had leapt at me split into its upper and lower halves in mid-air and rolled away.

“…I’m sorry, I should have prepared for this. Please, let me do it for you, I’m really sorry!”

It was Saul-niisama, gripping his sword tightly.

Together with Reiji-san, following a step behind him, they furiously swept through the surrounding area.

As the two began to demonstrate their full strength, they mowed down the onrushing assailants, as if their previous struggle had never existed.

A corner of the forest was soon stained with blood.

“Ugh…!”

Finally, unable to contain the pressure of what is rising from my throat, I fell to my knees, barely preventing my body from collapsing with the support of my staff, and irresistibly vomitted on the ground. The bitter-sour liquid burned in my throat as I coughed it up. I was thankful that I had little appetite in the morning.

Kill me. Just kill me already.

…But there’s no way around it. That’s the world we’re living in.

I stood up unsteadily, wiped my tears with my sleeve, and glared at those around me who were still fighting. I had to do my job. I started chanting a new spell to help those two fighting just a little further ahead, tears still streaming down my face.

I must never forget this experience. Being a healer on the battlefield was surely a crueler role than I thought. Fighting means sending the wounded out to die again and forcing others to kill someone else… that must surely not be forgotten.

“Iris… How are you holding up?”

As I marched down the road with tears still streaming down my face, I hear Saul-niisama’s concerned voice.

“(sniffs)…I’m fine. This is the road you two have walked, I, too, can…”

Nii-sama suddenly grabbed my shoulders, and with a serious expression on his face, he stared at me.

“Listen to me. I don’t want to see such a look on your face anymore, Iris. That’s why I’ll take my share of your ‘enemies’, as much as possible. I shall hesitate no more.”

No, that’s not what I wanted. Still sobbing and unable to speak, I could only try to convey this by at least looking at him and shaking my head no. But Nii-sama smiled gently and put his hand on my head with a plop. He gently stroked it, as if to calm me down.

“Hear me out, alright? I know you’re sad to see lives disappear, even those of our enemies… but I hope you stay that way… I’m sure it’s for our own good. Because I won’t justify getting my hand dirty, I’ll live without abandoning people, and I’ll live without forgetting the weight of what I do.”

Nii-sama gently wrapped his arms around me.

In his tender embrace, I could no longer hold back my tears, as if it was a reverse of last night…

31. A new encounter

Iris

“There’re an awful lot of people here… Iris, you okay?”

“Yeah, I can manage… somehow.”

The mess hall, where usually only we and the occasional townspeople who came to eat, was filled with a large number of people… They were men clad in a menacing aura that made it easy to tell at a glance that they were combatants of some kind. It seemed that they were the escorts of the merchants who arrived here recently.

That aside, Saul-niisama was still reeling from the incident the other day and silently following behind me. I thought the two of them would have something to say about the fact that he and I were sleeping on the same bed, but Reiji-san just patted me on the head a few times… Was that supposed to be a compliment?

Somehow we found an open space for three in the corner of the mess hall, took our seats some distance away from the crowd, and ordered our meals as well. However, the sheer number of people, the occasional glance toward me, and the rough way those men spoke reminded me of “that time”, and I couldn’t even get the soup down my throat.

“Dude, I’m so pissed. Our long-awaited break in this nice little town just got interrupted because some jobbers couldn’t even kill a single gob!”

Instantly, the two of them stopped eating.

I looked fearfully toward the voice and saw several men looking at me with grins on their faces. My skin bubbled with horror. The way those men looked at me reminded me of…

“……Just forget about it. Those bandits are long dead.”

“……Yes.”

The warmth on Reiji-san’s hand as he gently touched mine and murmured brought me back to my senses before the dam in my mind burst. Yes, the matter of “that time” had now long gone. I saw it all through to the end myself.

I heard a grating, vulgar laugh, but I ignored it.

What was it about our situation that “pissed” him off so much?

Suddenly, one of those men walked up to me and removed my hood in a flash.

“……”

My breath was stuck in my throat at the sight of my face being exposed. I was about to cry at the sound of the voices around me, but I tried to hold it in. Reiji-san and Saul-niisama looked outraged, but I gestured them with my eyes that everything’s okay. I didn’t want them to cause trouble by starting a fight in the mess hall, so I’d just ignore it for a while and let it pass…

“Damn, I don’t know what business you have with this remote town, but you look so cute. Too bad I’m not into children.”

That was one word too many. Was this his idea of flirting? No, I didn’t think he’s the type to earn others’ consent with that tone.

“You’re a skilled healer, aren’t you? I don’t care if they saved this town from an unidentified monster or whatever, how about you leave those chumps with only shiny equipment to show behind and come with us instead? I can assure you a much better treatment.”

My spoon that had been stirring up the soup senselessly clanged against the tableware as my body shook in something that wasn’t fear. It was anger, so much anger that I started to be surprised at myself.

“…Take back what you said.”

“Huh?”

Despite trying to stop the two of them from doing the same thing earlier, I voiced my protest against the man. I could feel them panicking beside me, but my mouth, which had apparently been quite stressed out by the whole thing up to this point, was no longer able to stop once I started to spit it out.

“I said… take back what you just said! Every single word of it!”

My condition, while somewhat better, had yet to be cured. It was so terrific that I looked down in front of me and shivered as if my knees would collapse at any moment… But my emotions were running high, and I was more angry than I was fearful.

Unforgivable… how dare he make such a despicable slander?! Did he even see how hurt they were because of yesterday?! Or see Ayame shaking and crying so badly last night?!

“Those two… they’ve always been there for me no matter what! The likes of you don’t have the rights to slander them!”

“You bitch…!”

There, I said it.

The enraged man grabbed me by the collar and lifted me off my feet, and the feeling of fear that was taking over my body quickly faded away from the waist down, a sensation I hadn’t felt for a long time. I reflexively held up my arms at least protect my head from the man’s hand swinging down at me, and squeezed my eyes to prepare for the impact that would come next…

Five seconds had passed… ten seconds had passed… there was no impact. When I fearfully opened my eyes, I saw that the man’s hand was being held by Saul-niisama, who was locking his arm behind his back. It didn’t look like Saul-niisama’s putting much force into it, but the man’s hand couldn’t move, his “Dammit, let go of me!” yell was the only sound echoing in the mess hall.

In the meantime, Reiji-san easily retrieved my body from the man’s grasp.

“……What you said was true for the most part, we did make a mistake, and we’re willing to accept whatever you have to say about us, but…”

Nii-sama slammed the man onto the table with great force, expelling the air inside his lungs and making him cough. After waiting for the man to calm down, Nii-sama continued.

“…Do not bring Iris into this, or I’ll make you regret it.”

I could not see his face, but at the sound of his low, even calm voice, the man who was being held down began to shake his head, looking very pale.

“What’s with the ruckus so early in the morning?”

“C-Captain?!”

Amidst the commotion where some people were ready to draw their weapons, a new person entered the hall with an air that could be called carefree around him. His dark brown hair was pulled back in an all-back bun, and his muscular body was covered with countless scars.

Reiji-san muttered “This guy is the real deal…”, so small that only I, who was being held to his chest, could hear it.

His gaze stopped at me, who was being held by Reiji-san, for a moment, making my body jolt. However, despite his stern appearance, his eyes had an intelligent light in them, and he smiled at me in a masculine yet somehow friendly way, and I soon let my guard down… He was a big, strong man by all appearances, but he had a strangely reassuring air about him.

The Captain who witnessed my condition glared at the mercenaries around me with a stern face again.

“So… don’t tell me you new recruits are going to lay your hands on the respectable lady over there?”

“N-No, w-we’re just trying to scare her a little…”

The men tried to explain themselves in a slurred tone, but their voices were feeble because the situation was so obvious.

I let out a big sigh. Despite being in Reiji-san’s arms, where it was safe and secure, I still felt the chilling anger even if it hadn’t been directed at me.

“Y’all need some good old-fashioned discipline, that’s what you need. Now go apologize to the lady, you numbskulls!”

“Eek?! We’re sorry!”

“It was just a prank, I swear!”

The group of men turned blue and bowed their heads as if they were about to get down on their knees at once. We (and the staff who had taken refuge in the kitchen) could only watch in amazement as they cleaned up the mess.

“Oh man… I’m sorry on behalf of those greenhorns. Are you hurt anywhere? Here, please lend me a hand.”

“O-Okay… Eh?!”

A blue-haired young man with a kindly appearance who had been standing by my side for some time casually held out his hand. He grabbed my hand, which I had taken without thinking because it was offered so naturally, and sat me down on the chair with a heave.

“…Well, well, well, what a pleasure to meet such a lovely princess. If possible, the next time you’re in danger, allow me the honor of saving you with my own two hands as your knight.”

He whispered to me in a somewhat theatrical manner, and then, in a gesture that I had seen in a movie or something, he put his lips to the back of my hand and immediately let go in such a natural motion that I wondered whether he had practiced this move for a long time.

My brain was unable to react to events that had greatly exceeded its capacity to respond, so I simply watched in a daze.

“…?”

Was it my imagination? When he started to raise his head and looked directly at me, his eyes seemed to widen slightly, just a little, with a hint of astonishment in them.

“…I beg your pardon. Such was your beauty that I couldn’t help but admire it.”

“Yes…?”

My brain was still unable to process what was going on.

“Oh brother, you dummy! How many times have I told you that it’s rude to do that to a girl?!”

“Ack!”

He was knocked down to the floor by a free-spirited looking girl with the same blue hair tied in a ponytail, who suddenly appeared behind him… Well, to be exact, she bonked him in the head with the sheath of her sword. I wondered if he was still conscious.

“Knight this, knight that, you haven’t been one for a long time… Ah, are you alright? Did he do anything weird to you?”

While I was still dumbfounded, the girl moved like a storm to see if I had any injuries, adjusting my hair and collar, and even put my hood back on as it had been.

My brain, which had finally resumed its activity, gradually understood the sequence of events… and my face turned bright red from embarrassment.

I had just been treated like a princess, complete with the kiss on the back of my hand.

“Ouch… why are you so cruel to me, I just wanted to greet her.”

“Oh brother, anyone with common sense would never greet a girl in that way! Why haven’t you learned your lesson?!”

For some reason, the girl was holding me in the arms and stroking my head through my hood.

Reiji-san was still frozen in the pose he had been holding me with, mouth agape.

Saul-niisama, whose fighting partner had been taken away at some point, was also completely stunned.

“They’re such a noisy bunch, aren’t they? I’m the captain of this mercenary company, ‘La Cercueil’. Once again I apologize for the out of control action of my subordinates.”

The Captain bowed his head vigorously. It must have been my imagination that the wind ruffled my bangs slightly.

…Coffin? What a strange name for a mercenary company. Doesn’t it bring bad luck?

“…No, it’s my choice of words that caused the commotion to happen, so I should be the one apologizing… I’m sorry.”

I sat down and returned the apology. Nii-sama also bowed his head next to me, and the Captain went to pay the bill for the hall’s repairs. With that, the matter was now water under the bridge.

And that was how we first met.

Once again, the meal was served… and this time, it was the Captain’s treat. We initially wanted to decline, but he insisted on making up for the trouble his subordinates had caused us, so we gratefully accepted the offer.

And so, just before the meal, we exchanged introductions.

“Allow me to reintroduce myself. I’m Walter, captain of this company, and these two are the squad leaders.”

“My name’s Zeltis. I’m sorry for my earlier misconduct.”

“I’m Philias, nice to meet you!”

The two people with the same hair color… they looked very similar and appeared to be much closer in age, and I couldn’t help but ask questions.

“Um… Are you two twins by any chance?”

“Of course! The handsome guy over there your brother must be your brother, right? That makes us both little sisters! We can have so much to talk about!”

“Please don’t mind my sister, she can be a nuisance sometimes…”

“Like you’re one to talk!”

A mild-mannered older brother and a boisterous little sister. Their dynamic reminded me of “me” and “Ayame”… so I smiled at them like I was looking at something funny.

Then it’s our turn to introduce ourselves.

“So… we’ve been asked to take down a horde of goblins that were spotted near this town.”

At these words, I could sense disappointment from both Reiji-san and Saul-niisama, although they did not express it in their attitudes. Perhaps they wanted to redeem themselves the other day, but now that the job was in their hands, there was no longer anything we could do, or so we thought.

“What do you think? Can you lend us your assistance?”

“Us…?”

Reiji-san’s eyes widened at the question.

“Where do I even start… The reconnaissance revealed that the horde was larger than I had honestly imagined. There’s a large colony of goblins that had been discovered in a town a little further down the road… I’m concerned that these goblins are possibly being led by a ‘commander’ type.”

A sufficiently large horde of goblins with a commanding individual guiding them was known to move in a more organized manner. But a horde of this scale, what if there were multiple leaders among them, or…

“In any case, we can’t deny that there’s a possibility that it’s getting out of hand for us. That’s why we need all the help we can get.”

“But we’re…”

Saul-niisama clammed up, as if reluctant to finish the sentence. He still hadn’t recovered from yesterday, and his eyes are shaking with a lack of confidence… but we couldn’t keep being like this…

“I’ve heard about your failure. If you ask me, it happens all the time to any new soldier.”

His eyes seemed to tell “Do you want a chance to make up for your mistake?”.

Saul-niisama turned his gaze toward me and Reiji-san.

We both nodded.

“…Then we’d like to take it on, and uh, we appreciate your concern.”

“Oh goodness, what are you thanking me for?”

A giggle escaped his lips as he shrugged his shoulders. As if he noticed me hearing him, he winked at me… I think this uncle looks kind of cool, like a movie actor or something. The “me” of before would have wished to become this kind of mature man in the future… Well, objectively speaking, it would have been impossible.

“…We’re departing at 11:00 today. These guys are nocturnal and as active as they are in the evening and morning, they’re at their slowest at that time. That’s it for now. If you have anything to ask, give me a word, I’ll leave you a liaison to help with that.”

“See you soon.”

“Bye bye~ Ah, Iris-chan, how about we bathe together after this?”

Each said their goodbyes and they stormed out of the restaurant.

…At first I wondered what would happen, but those three people who said they were executives were very agreeable, and I breathed a sigh of relief that it all worked out.

“Hey, Saul.”

“I know… They’re a capable bunch.”

I tilted my head at the two of them, who were looking serious.

“It’s a far cry from that wannabe mercenary. I didn’t feel his footsteps until he got that close.”

Ah, I see what they were talking about. Indeed, from my point of view, that man… Zeltis-san seemed to suddenly appear beside me. He took me from Reiji-san’s arms then took my hand and sat me down a chair before Reiji-san could be alerted.

“That bastard, his face pissed me off…!”

For some reason, Reiji-san had been in a bad mood since a while ago. Since that time, he had been occasionally sending glares toward Zeltis-san…

“Reiji being so jealous is unexpected, but it’s a pity he’s still so clueless…”

“…?”

I could only put a question mark on my head as Saul-niisama shrugged his shoulders and looked at me in pity.

“That aside… Reiji, think you can win against any of them in a fight?”

“Beats me. That old man Walter in particular, I don’t know what he’s capable of.”

From my point of view, he seemed to be a good-natured uncle, but apparently he seemed to be something else to the two sword-wielders. I was not sure about Philias-san, but perhaps all three of them were powerful people if those two had that much to say about them. I felt a sobering sense of how the inhabitants of this world are not to be underestimated.

Walter

“So, what do you think of these youngsters?”

I was talking to the one who was acting as a ruffian to those kids earlier… Now he had taken off his disguise and looked like a dull, young merchant’s servant. I didn’t trust a newcomer just because he’d just finished his first task, his entrance examinations were still ongoing.

“I don’t know what’s the deal with them, but they all seem to have some incredible abilities, but they’re still far too soft to be on the battlefield.”

He shrugged his shoulder, but the next moment, his expression turned serious.

“…Well, that was what I thought at first.”

“Oh? What about now?”

“I don’t want to fight them at all, especially the guy with the silver hair. Even if he’s a bit sloppy at the moment, he’s the type of guy who would go to ‘any lengths’ for what’s important to him. I swear, he was going to murder me at any moment back there.”

“…Very well. If I hadn’t heard that answer, I would have fired the auditor, but I’ll cut him some slack this time.”

“Phew… I’m saved…”

The man left the room after letting out his breath.

I recalled those youngsters… especially the girl at the center of it all.

“The ‘Northern Princess’… She’s very different from what I’ve heard of her. Rumor had it that she was a doll-like princess who never moved her face under any circumstances, but, well, here we are.”

The name first appeared in a commotion when a village girl living quietly in a remote knight’s estate was spotted by the local lord and forcibly taken away. It began with a call for the rescue from a man who was her brother, after a series of twists and turns, the girl turned out to be related to the missing sister of the former king, who was also missing, and the sudden scandal caused an uproar… The identity of the girl’s father could have been another oversized scandal, so everyone involved agreed to keep the matter under wraps… The girl was then placed into the custody of the country, but her whereabouts afterward were unclear.

And it was said that the girl was petrified all the time, hardly changing her facial expression, and being swept along by her surroundings during this commotion. Like an emotionless living doll.

But the girl I saw might look calm, but her facial expression changed from moment to moment. She was a somewhat shy girl, but she looked and acted like a girl of her age, and didn’t look like a doll.

That wasn’t the end of the mysteries. Her appearance didn’t differ in the slightest from the portrait drawn at the time… seven years ago to be exact, except that the signature wings of the Highborn race were missing from her back.

“To think that you would contact me like this… What are you trying to pull, Aureolus?”

As I stared at the letter, which was now nothing more than a folded sheet of paper, I muttered to myself and to no one in particular.

30.Unexpected Struggle

Iris

It was a sudden change from the usual peace.

While we were waiting for Milly-san… no, I suppose I should call her Miriam-san, to finish her work, we came to the forest to gather the medicinal herbs that this town needed. It was then that we were suddenly attacked by the little critters that weren’t supposed to be around these parts “back when it was in the game”.

“Damn, one of them escaped!”

“Reiji, you’re straying too far, get back!”

“But who’s gonna handle the archers at the back?!”

“Just get back here, please! My ‘Protection’ is about to run out!”

“Tch!”

…The battle had dragged on for quite a while since the initial ambush. It was no doubt that “a certain weakness” we had been throwing everything out of gear. Ill emotions were building up among us.

Our enemies were green-skinned creatures about the size of a human child, with crumpled faces and long noses… goblins, the staple of any fantasy world.

In games and such, they were mostly cannon fodders, but when we faced them in this way, we realized that they have solid intelligence, work together to compensate for each other’s weaknesses, and take advantage of their numbers to adapt their responses to the situation, making them extremely troublesome. Not to mention…

Because we were in the middle of a forest, Reiji-san’s weapon, a greatsword, couldn’t be used to its full potential. Against a small and quick target, slash attacks are severely limited, and there were many situations where a thrust attack is required, and he seemed to be struggling with this.

Saul-niisama was more flexible with his attacks, but even so, he had to  be aware of everything around him in this place surrounded by obstacles, and he couldn’t leave me, who was apparently the main target. The few goblins that had managed to get close were dealt with immediately, but this had also alerted the enemies, and their tactics had changed to using crude bows and throwing stones. Still, he was slowly whittling away at their numbers by showering them with chains and thunderbolts, but it is not enough to overturn the gap in numbers.

“Iris, above you!”

At Reiji-san’s cry, I quickly raised my hand upward and deployed a “Solid Ray”. Immediately after, with a tingling vibration in my hand, my barrier caught a goblin’s club. It was probably a goblin trying to jump on me from atop a tree.

“Don’t you get away!”

Saul-niisama’s “Chain Bind” quickly wrapped around the goblin’s feet and knocked it to the ground. While it was stunned by the impact, Saul-niisama tried to follow up with an attack…

“…!”

For a moment, the tip of his sword was off.

Not again. Since earlier, both Reiji-san and Saul-niisama were noticeably lackluster in their movements. In that moment of hesitation and freeze, I saw another goblin dragging to retrieve its fallen comrade.

“Divine Spear!”

The two spears that I fired lodged themselves into the goblins’ backs, knocking them unconscious. Reiji-san immediately went in to finish off his fallen opponents, but just before he can do so, his sword tip was dulled by hesitation, and another goblin moved in to interrupt… not again, too.

“Nii-sama, Reiji-san, we’re retreating! Cover your eyes!”

As long as the number of enemies couldn’t be reduced, the longer it took, the more disadvantageous it became for us. The “Wide Protection” had been recast and there was still time to spare, but it would be too late if I couldn’t make it in time. After telling them that, I started chanting, trusting that they were both dealing with the situation properly.

Two seconds later, I unleashed the spell with all my might.

“Flash Spark!”

Instantly, a flash of light filled the space around me. While the goblins were momentarily immobilized, Reiji-san and Saul-niisama fell back and carried me out of the battlefield.

“A horde of goblins?”

When we returned to town, we were the first to report the earlier incident to the mayor.

“Yes… We had to withdraw, partly due to lack of preparation.”

Both Saul-niisama and Reiji-san seemed to be suffering from their earlier blunder, and were standing there looking absentminded. By the process of elimination, I was the one giving the report.

“…If they actively attacked people like this, could it be that we’re dealing with quite the large horde of goblins?”

The mayor put his hands on his chin and wrinkled his brows, looking distressed.

Yes, goblins rarely attack people if their number was low. However, a large enough horde of goblins would turn into a major threat. They rob food, kidnap women, and their brutality is horrific.

“By the gods, this is ill news indeed… Before we go any further, let me say this. I won’t force you to go and defeat them. However, if I may be so bold to presume, knowing what you’re capable of, I suppose you could have handled it?”

At these words, the two of them looked away awkwardly.

…The mayor had a point. Even if it was a surprise attack, even if the other side had the advantage of location, even if they were far outnumbered, there was honestly no way that the goblins could pose a threat to the two of them. But they were forced to run back.

“…Well, I know you have your own reasons, and I trust that you do not have ulterior motives. I will consult with the merchant bodyguards, and if it is all right with you, I would appreciate your cooperation at a later date.”

“Yes, certainly… Are you okay with that?”

“You’ve done enough for today. You should get some rest.”

“I have no objection to that… and sorry for what happened.”

“Don’t sweat it. I, too, had looked only at your fighting ability, and I had forgotten that you are still young. My apologizes.”

So the mayor knew what’s going on too…

The entire reason for this unexpected struggle… was our “aversion to killing”.

Back in the game, when an attack hit, a “blood effect” was generated, and some attacks would cause “dismemberment effect” and the limbs would fly off somewhere. But in the end, it’s all just a performance.

This world is different. People didn’t disappear into thin air when they were killed. If you cut your opponent, real blood flowed, shredded limbs scattered around you, cloudy eyes that had lost their light torment you, and the remains of the melee were a bloody scene with the smell of blood and grease in the air.

Until now, it seemed that the main focus was on exterminating vermin, so there may not have been much resistance, but as modern children living in peaceful Japan, we were usually unfamiliar with such things, and it’s natural that we were not used to it… When we were faced with humanoid opponents like goblins, this problem reared its ugly head.

We all returned to our respective rooms in silence after taking a longer-than-usual bath, forcing food into our stomachs despite losing our appetite, and under the illusion that the stench of blood was stuck in our bodies and could not be removed.

That night, I found it difficult to sleep. Still, as I gazed blankly into space, my consciousness faded away, and I dozed off…

It was only by chance that I noticed the noise.

I was awakened by the sound of the keyhole being opened with a crank, despite it being meticulously muffled. Someone opened the door slightly and entered my room, trying hard to kill their footsteps. I didn’t think Ms. Miranda, who handled the keys, would give a duplicate key to a strange person, so it’s either a thief, or a person she’d have no problem giving it to…

“…Saul-niisama?”

The intruder cowered at the question.

“Ayame?”

“……”

Under the moonlight shining through the window, I could see a face that looked close to crying. Come to think of it, in the old days, whenever Ayame was troubled by something, she would sneak into my, no, “the other me’s” bed. She’d dropped this habits since she started high school, though…

“It’s been a while since we share a bed together, isn’t it?”

I flipped up the edge of the bed cover, and when I urged Ayame to come closer, she approached me with an air of trepidation.

“…Sorry, just this once.”

“You don’t have to be so shy… Come on, get in.”

A warm body heat, now completely reversed in size, slid into the space of the bed that had been opened by the side.

We got into bed, but neither of us said anything to the other, and time passed with only the warmth on my back, feeling nostalgic for the fluffy feel of feathers on “Saul-niisama’s” back, which I had now lost.

“Did you see a bad dream or something?”

“I’m not that kind of kid anymore…”

I chuckled at the sulking tone. Ayame was the kind of person who did everything with ease, but for some reason, she wasn’t a very good liar. As I turned my body around, I urged her to do the same and face me, sounding gentle but determined. Eventually, as if giving up, she reluctantly turned to me.

“Can we talk? I’ve shrunk a lot, but I can at least lend you my chest like I used to, you know?”

Tears slowly seeped down “Saul’s” handsome face. Gently, I held it into my chest.

……

For a while, we remained silent as it was. As I waited patiently, feeling the warmth of Ayame’s breath on my stomach, and the sensation of my chest slowly becoming wet with something warm, she began to talk.

“I killed a person. Right after I came to this world.”

She must be talking about the time “I” was being held captive. I was not conscious at the time, but I knew what happened.

“I thought Onii-chan was in danger, and I lost my temper. One by one, I cut them down. Not just those who couldn’t resist, but also those who turned their back and ran away. Yet…”

I was not able to notice it. No, I might have been aware of it dimly. But somewhere along the way I wondered if I had thought of it as something else, something that was a problem for those two to overcome on their own.

“I’ve killed a lot of people, but I couldn’t finish off a humanoid goblin. Is that weird?”

I was the only one whose hands had not been bloodied. What comfort could I say to her in such a situation? Beautiful words slipped through the back of my brain and disappeared, unable to pass the throat before they left my mouth. Except for this one sentence that did not disappear.

“But in the end… We’re able to meet again like this because you two fought hard for it, no? I can’t thank you enough, Ayame.”

I didn’t want any of them to deny that fact. I was only able to be here now thanks to their help and protection.

There were no words thereafter. Only the faintest of subdued sobs escaped in the moonlight, so all I could do was hold Ayame’s head and gently stroke it until she fell asleep.

I… want to be strong. Even if I don’t have the strength to defeat my enemies, I want to be able to support and lift up others.

As I gazed at the moonlight streaming in through the window, my thoughts drifted to that.

29.Confused Heart

Iris

“……Why are you even here?”

Under a blue sky in a town bustling with reconstruction work, my voice came out harsh in contrast. I’m sure if I were to look in a mirror right now, I’d see my gaze just as cold.

“Uh… I don’t know what might happen when you’re alone, so I’m just concerned.”

“I’m even more concerned if you keep following me around.”

“Guh?!”

I couldn’t help but feel awkward around those two, so I ran out into town aimlessly, but for some reason, Reiji-san was right behind me. As much as I wanted to hurry up to distance myself from him, our difference in leg stride was so great that he was able to keep up with me just by walking at a leisurely pace, which was really irritating.

“I said I’m sorry! I didn’t know things would go that badly…”

“Badly, you say…?”

When I thought back to that time, my face was burning with embarrassment, and tears spilled from my eyes. Reiji-san grew flustered at such a sight, but I couldn’t stop the wave of emotions that is surging through me.

“Do you have any idea how humiliated I felt?! The two of you… kept on violating my body over and over, no matter how much I told you to STOP!!”

“Heyheyhey, could you not word it like that, people are going to get the wrong idea!”

I shouted in anger, as my uncontrolled emotions ran wild. Every time I looked at Reiji-san’s face, I was reminded of that embarrassing experience when I exposed myself so foolishly, and I lashed out at him.

…Truth be told, I believed that Reiji-san wasn’t entirely at fault.

I was the one who asked him to examine the pattern on my back in the first place, and I didn’t expect things to turn out that way either.

As much as I wanted to blame him for what happened, I couldn’t forgive myself for making such a blunder in front of him and then behaving in a not-so-pretty way afterward…

And yet… I was still so embarrassed that I could neither look him in the eye nor let bygones be bygones…

Thus, an entire day had passed without me being able to do anything meaningful.

…What about Saul-niisama? I don’t know, how about him grow a pair and take responsibility?

“By the way, it seems a peddler has arrived in town.”

“Yeah, no wonder the kids are so excited.”

As I wandered around aimlessly, trying to lift my sinking spirit, I overheard a conversation among the townspeople.

“A peddler, huh. Not a bad idea to pay him a visit, don’t you think? We might be able to plan our next destination.”

Apparently Reiji-san had also heard about it… This could be a chance for us to make up.

“…Um, Reiji-san.”

Ugh, I must be looking like a sulking child right now. I really hated it.

“Hmm? What’s the matter?”

“I want to see what kind of goods a peddler sells, you know…”

For some reason, I couldn’t finish the rest of my sentence, as the words died in my throat… but if I couldn’t be honest with myself here and keep running away, an opportunity like this might not come again.

I squeezed my eyes shut, took a few deep breaths, corrected my trembling voice and told him with all my might.

“…If you agree to go with me, I’ll forgive you for what happened.”

“Excuse me?!”

Did I make a mistake again?

I tilted my head at Reiji-san, who suddenly became flustered.

While Reiji-san seemed to be occupied with something over there, I was engrossed with the knick-knacks in front of me. It was no longer common in my original world to see so many of the various goods that were spread out by the peddler, spread out all over the town square. The small items, each of which seemed to be handmade and slightly different from each other, were pleasing to the eye, and there were several materials that I had never seen before.

I used to not be so interested in these accessories, but now I enjoyed just looking at them. Come to think of it, my taste buds seemed to be changing as well. Compared to my old self, I was more of a sweet tooth, while at the same time my spice tolerance had dropped… I got a little anxious and secretly pinched my belly area lightly. Yeah, I wasn’t getting puffy or anything… probably.

It happened when I picked up one of the merchandise.

I casually picked up a brooch in the shape of a dark-blue flower with a faint iridescent glow. It looked very beautiful, but the moment I touched it, I felt something tugging at my heartstrings.

“…Huh?”

My field of view tilted, and the world seemed to be turning… No, it’s me who’s going to be…

“Watch out!”

The next moment I felt a quick and light shock, and someone held me up.

I blinked my eyes at the blue sky that suddenly spread out in front of me and Reiji-san’s worried face looking down at me.

…What just happened?

“Are you feeling unwell? You just collapsed all of a sudden.”

“I… collapsed?”

When I came back to my senses, my small figure was held up in Reiji-san’s embrace.

I could feel my heart thumping a little… that’s weird, isn’t it?

“Yes, you did. Again, are you feeling unwell?”

Reiji-san looked at me in concern, apparently unaware of my new weird emotions. What a relief… Wait, why was I relieved?

“Well, not really… Ah.”

“What happened?!”

“My legs… they aren’t moving. The enhancement magic wore off… I think.”

Yes, the reason why I collapsed was because my legs were unable to support my weight when the enhancement magic suddenly wore off.

“I see, so it’s no big deal. It’s rare that you misread the effect duration, though.”

That couldn’t be. The magic was supposed to last for three hours. It was not possible for it to wear off after only a few dozen minutes of running out of the room.

“…Anyway, I’m going to recast the spell. ‘Physical Enhance’.”

The elementary level magic took little time to chant, and my body was momentarily enveloped in the familiar faint magical light… or not.

I didn’t feel anything at all.

“Huh…? ‘Physical Enhance’… ‘Physical Enhance’!”

No matter how many times I tried, there was no response. Oh, no.

That enhancement magic was the only way I could be able to live a normal life in this world. What am I supposed to do now?

Blood drained from my face, and a feeling of panic slowly eroded my chest.

As I impatiently recited the magic over and over, an apologetic voice called out to me from behind.

“Dear customer… I think you’re unable to use magic because of that brooch you’re holding.”

“You mean this?”

I was still holding on to the brooch from earlier. I returned it to the peddler and tried casting the spell again, this time without any problems.

“I’m sorry if I inconvenienced you.”

“Don’t worry, miss, I’m glad that you weren’t hurt. It’s my fault too for not explaining it sooner. It’s not often that I found someone relying on magic for everyday life this far from the cities…”

As it turned out, the brooch was made from a material that could nullify magic of its surroundings to some extent. It was newly discovered in recent years near a village not far from here, on the road leading to the city. Especially in this northern continent, which had a large concentration of magic users and magic tools, it was said that a license issued by the government was required for handling more than a certain amount of this material, as it might be used for criminal purposes. That’s what the peddler explained to us.

Recently, however, research was being conducted on its use as a material for magical tools after processing, and there was a booming demand for it in places where it could be mined. Because of its brittleness, it didn’t seem to be used to create restraints or something like that, which is a relief for a moment, but…

“Reiji-san, there was no such thing back in the game, right?”

“Maybe Miriam knows a thing or two about it, but as far as I know, that material is unheard of.”

“…I have a bad feeling about this.”

All too conveniently, a recently discovered material appeared in front of us, one that did not seem to exist at the time of the game. Such a material seemed to be used in everyday products without question… I couldn’t say for sure what it is, but I couldn’t help but feel something fishy about it.

“My apologies, dear customers, but this is getting too much for my unmarried heart to bear… Could you continue somewhere else?”

“Yes?”

“Hmm?”

I looked around when the peddler said something unexpected.

…Why were we getting so much attention?

The crowd was happily whispering to each other, and I could hear some of the women squealing… Ah.

“S-s-s-s-sorry, I didn’t mean it, Reiji-san!”

“N-n-no, it’s my fault too!”

I was still held in Reiji-san’s arms.

I immediately got off from his arms and sat down on the ground, and Reiji-san quickly moved away from me.

All I could do was pinch the edges of my hood down to shut out my burning hot face from the eyes of those around me.

My heart was threatening to jump out of my chest… I think I might have gone somewhat crazy after all…

I hope it’s not a bad disease.

Reiji

Saul disappeared from my sight, Iris in tow.

I let out a breath of relief and sank into the hot water, resting my back against the rock.

That was so close, yikes.

I tried to remove my eyes as much as possible, but my gaze was inevitably drawn toward Iris. The charm of her white, young body felt like magic.

The image was burned into my eyes even if I tried to forget it.

Her hair was pulled back, her thin neck and nape exposed. Drops of water slid down the firm, fine-textured skin of her neck, shoulder and the slight bulge in her chest. Even if the person herself didn’t notice, I could occasionally see the cherry blossom color hidden beneath the thick and murky water.

Earlier, when she walked, her buttocks, which could be glimpsed from time to time through the shade of her long hair despite her trying to hide them, were modest but cute and plump… Okay, I should probably stop.

The point is, although she was implanted with knowledge by Ayame-chan, and her consciousness now belonged to the girl called “Iris”… she was as just defenseless around us as the Yanagi of before.

Because she trusted me.

Without those words of her, my reason might have been blown away into next week. Betraying her trust was not an option. With that one thought in mind, I managed to hang on to whatever’s left of my sanity.

I’m sure that’s why Saul didn’t say anything about the mixed bathing, and why he took Iris to do something deliberate to humiliate me now. He wanted Iris to be properly alert to us, the opposite sex… probably.

Well, knowing what he’d done so far, I’m not so sure about that.

As a matter of fact, Iris had unknowingly become extremely popular in this town. The people knew of her as a healer girl who was captured by bandits and suffered terrible emotional trauma, yet ran around for other victims and didn’t demand much gratuity. She normally wore a hood in the presence of men to conceal her face, but after a certain incident the other day, rumor of her beautiful appearance had already spread.

Although she was unaware of it, her mere presence in the background of today’s reconstruction site was enough to make the men at the site extremely enthusiastic. Their disappointment afterward when she was taken by a group of women, was well deserved. Men are like that.

We were lucky enough to enjoy such a warm camaraderie from the townspeople, probably due to the fact that this town was located at the frontier, or the mayor and his wife were good people, or both. But things might not stay the same once we continue on our journey. It’s better for Iris to develop her self-awareness as a girl from now on, without Saul’s involvement, for once.

“Nii-sama, stop, this is really embarrassing! M-my front is…!”

“As much as I would love to, unfortunately this one time I absolutely cannot. Don’t worry, just show me. ‘Chain Bind’”

“Kyah! M-my arms…!”

… Hold up, what’s happening? Did he seriously forget what his goal is? Was that the sound of metal chains clattering I just heard?!

“Nyahoo~ Looks like a lot has happened, Senpai.”

“Yeah, totally… Hey, why the hell are you here?!”

Before I knew it, another person was leisurely soaking in the bathtub. The one who should have been holing up in her room, Milly, no…

“Miriam the Tailor.”

I didn’t think Iris was aware of this, but this girl was actually the guildmaster of a famous top-class production guild back in the game days. A wanderer at heart, she rarely showed up at the guild and was still well-liked for some reason. My junior at college, who was also a cosplayer in real life, took up the hobby of making clothes in video games as well. She travelled around by herself, collected rare material, pushed her self-made equipment to players caught in her eyes (namely, the cute ones) and left without elaborating. In a sense, she was a walking myth.

“Everyone’s so mean, nya, leaving me behind while bonding in the bath together. You could have called out to me, nya.”

“S-sorry about that! But why are you even here, you’re the only one who’s 100% a girl!”

Yes, unlike Saul, who’s a man with a girl’s heart, and Iris, who’s a girl with Yanagi’s memories, she’s a girl in both the original world and this one!

“Nyahaha, how could I miss out on a mixed bathing trip in the countryside? Besides…”

Arms outstretched, she flaunted her figure… which was covered by a thin, one-piece, water-soaked bathrobe, unlike the naked Iris.

“… I came here prepared, see.”

“You could have said that from the beginning.”

And why didn’t she give Iris a piece of clothing like that too while she was at it? That could have saved me from so much agony.

“Anyway, want a drink?”

Damn, she even brought booze. She was enjoying this to the fullest, wasn’t she?

Come to think of it, I hadn’t had the opportunity to drink alcohol since I arrived here, so it was a tempting invitation.

“Y-your face is so close, it tickles… Eek!”

Considering what was going on over there, I suppose drinking was a fine distraction.

Japanese… no, Eastern Islands sake was poured into the cup, which was then gulped in one go. The burning sensation in my throat wasn’t half bad to be honest. Soaking in a hot spring under a clear, snowy sky and good sake. I felt like my fatigue was finally slipping away.

“… By the way, the request I made, it was crazy, wasn’t it?”

“Of course, nya. ‘Make the best armor possible which she can wear right now’ and whatnot. Somehow I think we’ve come to a satisfactory arrangement, nya.”

“I see… that’s perfect. How much do I have to pay you?”

“Nyahaha, no strings attached, nya. If this is for Iris-chan’s safety, I can do it for free, nya.”

So generous of her. In this world, when equipment with powerful effects was worn by those who were not strong enough, they become severely “intoxicated” by the power they were charged with. It was so bad that they couldn’t even stand up. In order to mitigate this problem and still maintain performance, appropriate materials and procedures were required, and it’s not something we could easily afford.

But she just laughed it off while gulping down her own sake cup. Her face, as she looked up at the sky, was not her usual aloof self, but rather a serious face with a hint of melancholy.

“…I’d hate to see a girl I care about die before I do, you see.”

“…Sorry to hear that.”

I remembered. Ayame once told me this girl had lost her sister in the past. It was a suicide, caused by mental illness. Her cosplay hobby… she started it for the sake of her late sister, based on the favorite anime she watched when she was stuck at home.

“… I’m really glad that you came over to this world with us.”

“Hehe, you flatter me, nya.”

Perhaps embarrassed by my sudden display of gratitude, the slightly red-faced, goofy tone of her joking expression quickly became serious.

“Not just that, call it intuition or whatever, but I have a feeling that we must keep her safe at all costs. Her life alone is more important than all of ours combined…”

“She’s got an important role to play, I see.”

Somehow, I had a faint sense of it. There was something unusual about Iris’ support capabilities. However, the overwhelming presence that I felt at that time had now faded away in this relaxed atmosphere.

But even without that, if, as expected, only the tertiary reincarnated classes were coming this way, she would be the only pure support and recovery player among us. It’s not like the non-player people in this world couldn’t become healers and supports, but compared to them, Iris’ capabilities were immeasurable.

“So that’s why I’m willing to help. And I’ve taken a liking to her.”

“I’ll be counting on you from now on, Overlord Miriam.”

“Nyahaha, it’s embarrassing being called by that name, nya… Well, my pleasure, Sword Saint-san.”

Calling each other by our unfamiliar class name, we bumped the sake cups lightly, and gulped the contents once again.

“Eep! W-why do you… have to confirm that far? Stop it… no, not that spot, stop!”

“I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS TOMFOOLERY, DUMBASS SAUL!!”

Clearly, whatever was happening behind those rocks seemed to be about to break past an unforgivable line, so I had to put a stop to it.

“(sniffs) I can’t become a bride anymore…”

“Then why are you sitting next to me, huh?!”

Yes, when she came back and got into the hot water, she went straight to sit between me and Miriam, who were drinking side by side. The space wasn’t that big to begin with, and I could feel her soft and smooth arm pressed against my right arm, chipping away at my sanity. However, I was reluctant to push away the crying girl, so I had to let her do what she wanted while feeling uncomfortable.

“My, my, is this girl secretly possessive, nya?”

Miriam nodded in agreement all by herself. What was she going on about?

“I’m really sorry, I shouldn’t have done that.”

Saul bowed deeply, and Iris, unusually, turned bright red and glared at him with tear-filled eyes. If that isn’t pissed off, I don’t know what that is. Miriam and I quickly evacuated the liquor.

“…So, did you find what you were looking for?”

“Not really, as I haven’t found the answer, but at least I was able to confirm that it isn’t tied to our initial registration in the original world.”

“If you say so.”

“Because… when I started the game, I had already ‘grown’ compared to this.”

“?!”

Iris and I choked. Why did this dumbass have to drop such a bombshell?!

Next to me, Iris’ shoulders were shaking. Although I couldn’t see her downcast expression, I could somehow guess how she feels.

“…Nii-sama, if that’s the case, a glance would have sufficed… Could you please explain it to me why you literally stared at every inch on my body in a way that makes sense?”

Uh oh, I felt a tremendous aura of negative emotion wavering up from next to me. It might even surpass the strange enemy we fought the other day.

“Ahaha… You were so cute when you were embarrassed, so I couldn’t help myself- I’m really sorry!”

Oh well.

I could hear the sound of a blood vessel breaking.

“NII-SAMA, YOU DUMMYYYYYYYY!!”

The next moment, a large amount of water splashed up toward Saul in the hands of an enraged, teary-eyed Iris.

“Reiji-san, is that sake? I want some.”

“No.”

Come to think of it, she had always liked drinking, but her alcohol tolerance was pitiful.

By the way, Iris had not looked at Saul at all since a while ago. Saul, who was consciously ignored, looked depressed. Suck it up.

“I’m not a minor anymore.”

“Your body says otherwise.”

“Ugh…”

As Iris turned away, my eyes caught a glimpse of an unnatural white object on her back. It was really just a coincidence that I happened to spot it.

“Hey, Iris… there’s something on your back… a white worm?”

“Eh?”

Actually, it’s too beautiful to be called a worm. The thought of staring at a young girl’s skin scared me, but I still did it.

“Did you draw in these feather-like patterns when you created the textures?”

“I… don’t know what you’re talking about?”

Feather-shaped patterns spreading out to the left and right, surrounded by something like a magic circle. Moreover, they were the same color as Iris’ original white skin… That made sense. I could only see it now because Iris’ skin was reddish from soaking in the bath.

“What you said was scary, Reiji-san… Can you check on it?”

“Yeah, we’ll be in trouble if it’s something bad. Turn your back to me.”

Iris

“Hyaaah?!”

As soon as his finger slid down my back, my brain went blank from the sudden and unexpected stimulation, and a strange voice leaked out of my mouth as a scream, which I could not suppress… What’s happening?!

“Sorry, did it tickle? But please bear with me. I can’t check it out if you move… Hmm, what’s this?”

I couldn’t know what it was because I couldn’t touch it myself, but what I did know was that it’s getting really weird!

“Hey, Saul, are those magic letters? It’s so complicated I can’t read it at all.”

“Let me see… No, these aren’t even letters, do they come from the previous magical civilization or something?”

“Seriously?!”

“H-hold on, you two… let me catch a break…!”

Whenever their fingers slid together, I felt the magic in my body being disturbed like a ripple, and the stimulation slowly spread throughout my body…It’s too much!

“…! …?!”

Every time my back was touched, it felt like I was being stroked by countless hands across my body. Ever since I became like this, I’d been more sensitive than before… I could barely keep my voice from leaking out by sucking my fingers with my lips and clenching hard, but if this kept up… I didn’t want to think about it!

“Scratch that, could this be the markings of the goddess Ailene herself?”

“If so, we’d have to get an expert to decipher it, wouldn’t we?”

“Yes… It’s not a language with a fixed grammar, it’s something that shows meaning in the letters themselves… how do I interpret this?”

Those two, still concentrating on their discussion, didn’t notice my pleas, and the relentless stimulation on my back chipped away at my thoughts. At first, it was only skin-deep, but it gradually eroded deeper and deeper into my body, lighting me up in heat.

That feeling I had earlier in the changing room was now passing through my mind, and my blood quickly started to boil.

“Stop! If you continue, I… I…”

I couldn’t hold back my fingers, which were sticky with drool from sucking on them, and they left my mouth. I tried to get them to stop, but I had the feeling that as soon as I tried to speak, I would be unable to stop my embarrassing voice from coming out of the back of my throat, and I could only make a mosquito-like sound, which would not reach the ears of the two of them, still absorbed in the discussion.

“I… can’t… ! Stop it, please…!”

The rippling waves that disturbed the flow of magical power throughout my body reached its core, deep inside my stomach. An intense heat came down upon me like an avalanche. How’s this even possible?! I was just being touched on the back! My whole body was bubbling with the sensation that I had already crossed the breaking point, from which I could not return… no, no, no, why is this happening to me?!

“Is this… stick-looking thing in the middle the staff you saw the other day?”

Reiji-san’s finger was right on my spine. I couldn’t take any more of this!

“Guys, if you don’t stop whatever you’re doing, Iris-chan will be in great trouble… Ah, it’s too late for that now, isn’t it?”

“Huh?”

“What?”

The two of them finally came back to their senses. But Reiji-san’s finger, caught off guard, slid vigorously in the hollow above my spine…

“FWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!?”

The biggest and most sudden stimulation struck me like an electric shock, and I let out a scream that I had been accumulating until now…

“Woah?! Sorry, you alright-”

Reiji-san’s voice felt so far away.

My body, drained of strength, fell into the hot water like a puppet whose strings had been cut… and I let go of my consciousness.

A while later, when I came to on Milly-san’s lap, apparently having fallen over the edge, they were both down on their knees bowing their heads together.

“I told you to stop… so many times already…!”

“My bad, I really didn’t notice, I didn’t mean any harm!”

“I’m sorry, I’m really sorry!”

… Hmph, those two really put me through the wringer, I don’t think I can forgive them for a good while! Argh!

27.Let’s go to the hot spring

Iris

In the large dressing room, a red-faced girl whose silver hair seemed to radiate a faint rainbow-colored phosphorescence, was repeatedly unbuttoning and re-buttoning her garment.

Yes, it’s me.

At the mayor’s recommendation, we went to a hot spring on the outskirts of the town.

It had been about a quarter of an hour since Nii-sama hammered home to me that I should properly face up to my present situation and accept reality. It seems that Nii-sama had already gotten tired of calling out to me, and he had already finished washing his body and were soaking in the bathtub first. That’s what I was told earlier.

…I was getting nowhere like this. It was a path that I had to give up and pass through at some point, and I guess the time had finally come. I had to make up my mind.

In front of the mirror, my clothes were removed from the top.

A thin, unbuttoned robe slipped down my torso, followed by a skirt that was unzipped on the side and crashed onto the floor. The glimpse of white porcelain skin, cherry-red from embarrassment, and peach-colored, breast-covering underwear, glimpsed through the shadows of the blouse as the top buttons were unbuttoned one by one, made me catch my breath as if I had seen something I was not supposed to see. But my hands couldn’t stop, and the fabric covering this body was removed in a nonchalant manner.

The sound of light cloth falling to the floor intermittently continued, until at last there were only two pieces of cloth left, one covering the waist and the other the chest area.

“…”

At this point, I already wanted to run away. Reflected in the mirror was my skin, as white and spotless as pearl. My body hair was very thin, and my immature limbs, which didn’t have much in terms of muscles, were long and slender, and my slim but well-proportioned hips and waist were a modest proof of my body beginning to turn from a girl to a woman.

Touching lightly around the arms and stomach, I found the elasticity of healthy thin fat as soft as a marshmallow, moist and fine-textured to the touch, and a cool, slightly low body temperature. Everywhere I slided my fingers, they were soft and fluffy, leaving an exquisite touch that feels almost unreal, but on the other hand, there was a faint friction that told me that the body I was touching belongs to me. The skin on this body seemed to be thin and sensitive, and if I slid my finger over the surface a little, that area would twitch slightly.

“I can’t run away, I can’t run away, I can’t…”

Chanting like a Buddhist prayer, I undid the hooks behind the upper part of the last two pieces of cloth, which covered my chest. It slipped off my slender shoulders, and the part of her body hidden behind it was finally revealed.

“Woah…”

So far, I have stubbornly kept it out of sight, and therefore had only touched it lightly through a thin cloth just after the transition, but never again. The place reflected in the mirror, where I saw it for the first time, was indeed still an immature bud, but it had a modest cuteness that seemed to condense a sense of immorality. The slightly swollen area that I directly touched still retained the hardness of immaturity at its core as before, but the surface was smooth and soft to the touch, leaving a superb feeling in my palm that made you want to touch it forever after touching it once. The modest cherry blossom color, which was slightly tinted at the tip, was so lovely that I couldn’t help but want to love it.

My overall appearance was pale and delicate, making me want to reach out and touch it, but at the same time, if it was touched, it would scatter and disappear instantly… It had a kind of ephemeral, art-like appearance, like an ice sculpture that shines only for a very short period of time.

I took a deep breath and put my hands on both sides of the last piece of cloth around the waist. I was frozen in conflict there for a while. Once this was taken away, all that remained is this body, without a stitch of clothing on it like a newborn. Once I saw it, there was no going back, and I must accept that this is who I am, even if I didn’t like it.

However, it’s also true that I couldn’t continue to turn my eyes away from reality forever, so now that I’d been given the opportunity from Nii-sama’s strong-arm tactics, he would never allow me to escape, and I couldn’t stop trembling at the thought of what I’d face next. Closing my eyes, I pulled the little piece of cloth off my legs at once.

Finally, I had nothing left on my body, and I slowly opened my eyes to look at it.

I. Saw. It. Perfectly.

I wouldn’t go into details, but I guessed the only thing I could say was that this body was a remarkably brutal lolicon killer… To be honest, I did not expect it to be this good. As if guided by it with its fantastic danger, my hand wandered up and…

It was a little too stimulating for me.

I had completely underestimated the situation, as I had felt nothing but disgust during my previous horrific experience.

In this peaceful atmosphere, I touched it of my own volition. It should have been just a light stroke with the tip of a finger, but just like that, my knees shattered, and my heart started to beat wildly.

Lots of blood rushed to my face and I felt a terrible heat. The unexpected shock caused an embarrassing voice to leak out of my mouth before I had time to hold it in, and I am sure it was my imagination that I felt a burning sensation deep inside my flattened body from the shame that welled up inside me.

I was disgusted to realize that the sensation that ran through me was definitely because I was touching my own body. I was too afraid to touch it again.

I hated myself for getting hot on my own naked body before even soaking in the hot spring. My memories were those of a man who has no experience with women, so please forgive me.

When I finally cooled my head and body, I ducked out of the changing room and was greeted by a small but much more beautifully maintained bathroom paved with rounded stones than I had expected, and a bathtub constructed of natural rock.

The sun was still high in the clear blue sky. The imagination of a secluded hot spring deep in the mountains was betrayed in a good way, and the sight of an open-air bath that resembled the nostalgic ones from my original world was exciting. As a matter of fact, I loved hot springs. When my grandfather and grandmother were alive, we used to go to various places for hot spring cures, along with Reiji’s family.

Due to the dangerous environment, including monsters, the human population in this world was not as large as in the original world. However, due to highly developed magical technology, it was actually not so inferior, but rather, when it came to urban areas, it was equipped with technology that even surpassed that of the original world. For example, Acropolis, which sat at the center of the continents, was an almost sci-fi version of a “perfectly environmentally enclosed multilayered city”.

Such benefits even extended to such a semi-pioneer town like this. Not all houses of course, but it was not uncommon for somewhat wealthier houses to have complete water and sewage systems. This seemed to be one of those places, albeit minimal, and seemed to be no more inconvenient than the public bathhouses of the original world.

I reached the washing area, taking great care not to slip on my feet. When I touched the stone that seemed to play the role of a switch, I felt a little magic power absorbed from the palm of my hand. This was a device that used the magic power of the person who touched it to produce hot water using a built-in mechanism. A little while after touching the stone, a gush of hot water from the shower came out…

“…Hyah?!”

..or rather, cold water came out. Was it common here to be cold and surprised at first?

I immediately checked the water with my hand until it’s warm and let the sponge soak up the hot water. Then I took a small amount of something that looked like body soap, let it lather for a while, and then gently rubbed the surface of my body with it when it was sufficiently foamy.

……Come to think of it, it’d been several weeks since I’d washed my body in such a luxurious way using plenty of hot water. It felt better than I expected, and I couldn’t help but start humming a tune. With this body, I could sing in higher keys than before without any problem, so it’s quite fun to sing what I couldn’t in my original body. There shouldn’t be much difference in terms of hygiene from when I was magically purifying myself, but when I did this, it was as if fatigue was flowing from the area where I had rubbed it.

“… Why are you strolling in here so casually?!”

Reiji-san sank his body into the bathtub and only stuck his head out. By the way, Nii-sama was taking a half-body bath with a cool face.

Yes, this hot spring was a mixed bath.

Although it was not obvious at first, the entrance was divided into men’s and women’s sections, but as soon as I went a little further inside, the wall separating the two sections disappeared, leaving a “concave” structure that allowed people to come and go as they pleased.

“Um… I felt lonely in such a large bath all by myself… and it’s my long-awaited hot spring trip, so I want to bath together like before… is that not okay?”

“That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be a little wary! Don’t you think anything of being seen by a man with that body!”

At his words, I put a finger to my chin and thought for a moment. Well, it’s not that I wasn’t ashamed of it. I strongly resisted being seen in front of the stones, and now my back was turned because I was in the washroom, but when I moved, I covered the important parts with a towel, and so on. But.

“Reiji-san has always said ‘we’ve bathed together so many times that I don’t care about seeing you naked’, so I decided not to mind it either.”

I resumed washing my body, humming an appropriate tune again. I couldn’t wait to soak in the hot spring myself.

“AAAAAARGH!! Who, who the hell said it?! Dammit! I’ll beat the snot out of whoever said that! Wait, was that me?! Curses!”

It was followed by the sound of something hard hitting the rock. What was happening…?

“Well, calm yourself, Reiji.”

“Why are you so calm with this, Saul?! Normally you’d be pissed off for exposing your sister’s naked body to other people!”

“Yes, but I think I’d reward you for your hard work the other day.”

“Did you mistake reward with torture, dumbass?!”

Behind me I heard what sounded like a heated argument.

“… I’m sorry if I’m intruding you if I stay here… I’ll go over there now…”

It’s lonely to be alone in the spacious bath, but if that didn’t allow Reiji-san to rest, then I had to give up on my desire.

“Uh… It’s not like you’re intruding or anything… but I’m a man, you know?! Aren’t you afraid of exposing yourself so defenselessly?!”

I blinked a few times at those words. Certainly, it hadn’t been that long since what’d happened, and I was afraid of what would happen if my body was exposed to the male gaze, but.

“I trust you, Reiji-san.”

I turned toward those two and said that. It was a little embarrassing to say it, so I concealed it with a smile.

“………………”

Oh, my.

Reiji-san, who had been standing up before I knew it, was frozen and flapping his mouth. What happened? His face was bright red, and I wonder if he was upset.

“……Do whatever you please already.”

Reiji-san sank into the hot water, looking away as if he had given up.

Then, after a long time, and with the help of Nii-sama, I finished washing my long hair and had it put back together, I finally had my long-awaited bath.

“Ahhh… It’s paradise…”

I scooped up the murky and milky water into my hands. The slightly thick and viscous water was smooth and gentle to the touch, sliding down the hands and arms, tickling the armpits, and falling into the bathtub. The falling water reflected and sparkled in the sunlight, and the warm bath after a long time under the surrounding snowy forest and the open blue sky was so comfortable that my whole body seemed to melt away.

“You seem to be perfectly fine with bathing even though you hated it so much before.”

“I’ve already given up with this body…”

I clasped my hands together and stretched my arms out above my head. After a moment, my arms relaxed and fell into the warm water.

In fact, I just didn’t have the guts to look directly at the changed female body, and once I saw it, it didn’t matter anymore. I stopped thinking and rested my back against the rocks on the edge of the bathtub.

Really, I didn’t know why I had been so stubborn, this feeling was much more important to me.

“There’s a saying that… many people have trouble getting into the bath, but few regret it… I think it’s right.”

“She’s completely into this huh.”

“Well, she’s a big fan of hot spring even when she was ‘Onii-chan’.”

They were talking to each other, but what was being said didn’t enter my head. Tiredness seemed to melt out of my whole body, and something euphoric seemed to seep in instead to fill it. Ahhh.

“Now that I think about it…”

“… What’s up?”

“What’s the matter, Nii-sama?”

“If our current bodies are based on the game, then what could the parts not displayed in the game be based on?”

“Isn’t that a dirty joke?!”

Now that it’d been brought up, I was certainly curious about it. Unlike other body parts, those parts couldn’t be created in the game.

“Let me see… Back in our world, all those years ago, probably when he was in high school… Reiji-san loved bragging about it while we were in the bath…”

Could the body on the other side reflect the one on this side? If so, the suspicious thing would be the calibration for physique recognition at the first login. But if that was the case, Saul-niisama and I were of different genders from the other side.

“Hey, Iris, are you even aware that you just said something outrageous…?”

“What do you mean… Oh.”

“Don’t ‘Oh’ with me! You know what you look like right now, don’t you?!”

What do I look like…? (gasps)

My hazy head quickly became clear, and my face boiled red like it was going to explode. Ah, aaah, d-did I really say… that?! Oh no!

“T-That was really a silly thing to say, wasn’t it?! But it’s really amazing that I don’t feel any discomfort from looking at Reiji-san’s current body at all!”

“Stop, you’re making it even worse! I don’t want to hear that coming from you of all people!”

As we were struggling, a hand was suddenly placed on our shoulder from behind us.

The black presence, which I could see even without turning my head, cooled my thoughts, and even though I was in a hot spring, I began to break out in a cold sweat. Fearfully, I turned around.

“Well then, looks like I heard something that I can’t ignore.”

The Devil was here.

“…Erm, Saul-niisama, your hand… and your face too, you’re scaring me.”

The hand on my shoulder was gradually getting stronger and stronger, as if trying to make sure to never let me escape. It even hurt a little.

“Iris, when we created our characters, we didn’t exchange them when we logged in for the first time, right?”

“Y-Yes.”

It was like that for a few days, no?

In other words, Nii-sama… no, Ayame was suspecting that the “current” me here was…

“……Oookay. Let me take a look. There’s something I must confirm. I don’t wish to do something you don’t want to, Iris, but this is different. My dignity is at stake here.”

“Hyah?! W-wait, h-help me, Reiji-sa…!!”

“… Sorry, I can’t help you if Saul’s like that.”

The hand that reached out for salvation was beaten down mercilessly.

I was easily held up and dragged behind a rock, my body laid bare without any resistance…

I couldn’t become a bride anymore… (sobs)

Iris

How did it come to this?

In my arms, a little baby was smiling happily.

… Ah, but it’s cute though.

Nonono, that’s not what I want to say here.

The problem was that for some reason, I was surrounded by many mothers who lived in the town, and they were waiting for me to carry their babies in my arms. The babies themselves were light, but my arms were getting tired.

“Thank you so much, I’m sure this child will grow up wonderfully with your blessing!”

“E-Erm… You’re welcome?”

A smile of my own was pasted on my face. Is this what it feels like to be a celebrity or a popular politician visiting the countryside?

“Thank you, thank you…”

In addition to the long line, there were also housewives and elderly people who had finished preparing for lunch and had some free time, some of whom were praying with their hands together.

“Ah, ahaha…”

“Da~”

The baby’s hand tapped me on the shoulder as if to comfort me.

… Seriously, I wondered how things came to this.

It’s been three days since the night of that fatal battle.

I took the next day off… mainly because Reiji-san, who was the most fatigued, could not get out of bed.

At that time, I was dressed in various clothes and took care of him in that way. While I’d always appreciated taking care of others for once instead of receiving it, the… cosplay was a little embarrassing to me, and I’d rather not do it again.

Well, I put the lid on that at the bottom of my memory, took a good night’s rest, went to the hideout the next day, and repaired the “wound” that had occurred as expected without incident. In the process, I discovered the badly damaged remains… I’m not sure if it’s fair to call it that, of the missing townspeople, and reported to the mayor, who said he would send someone to collect their belongings and hold a funeral service in a few days. As for the building itself, it was decided that it would be burned down it was no longer usable, or rather, no one could find any use for it.

And thus, I was able to confirm with my own hands that the place of nightmare that had plagued me for so long was now a thing of the past.

I could now show my face with no problem around people of the same sex as me… in other words, the women.

Our equipment had been severely damaged from the battle, so we had to leave all of it at the mayor’s place. Since we couldn’t leave the town or train while it was being repaired, we decided what to do and offered to help with the reconstruction of the damaged areas of the town this morning.

… Actually, only Reiji-san and Saul-niisama were helping with the reconstruction works. They both had physical abilities that set them apart from their surroundings, and they were very dependable.

Milly-san, on the other hand, hadn’t come out of her assigned room after taking various body measurements of mine on that abominable cosplay day. I felt rather concerned whether she was eating properly.

What about me? I was actually really enthusiastic about it… sorry that was a lie. I went to the site basically trembling with fear, and everyone just gently declined my offer to help. To be fair, I couldn’t lift even a small piece of debris… no, I did manage to lift it a little bit, it just took all of my strength to do so.

The warm gaze of people toward me was very painful.

And just like that, I was evacuated to a corner… or should I say I was moved out of the way. Then I happened to be caught to a housewife passing by.

Before I knew it, I was brought here in front of the church by her in no time at all. Perhaps because it was a small town, the church looked more like a simple meeting place than a private house.

As a side note, this region, the northern continent, was home to the faith of Ailene, the goddess of wisdom and purity. It was also said that my current race, Lightwing, was her messenger sent to this world long ago, during the Age of Gods. On the other hand, the major faith in the Eastern Island Union was the faith of spirits and nature, while the people of the south were believers of Ares, the god of war.

…So, were my race to be discovered here on the northern continent, it’s likely that I’d be made an object of faith…?

Yeah, I’d like to avoid being exposed as much as possible…

In the church, there was a gathering of the mothers in this town, along with their children. At the request of the mothers who wanted to take advantage of this precious opportunity, this place of worship was now open.

The cause of this must be what I did the other day. According to the mayor, my light at that time had healed the wounds of all the people who were watching from afar, and it seemed that the fact that I was a healer had spread to the extent of a rumor, so by process of elimination, it must have been me, and so it came to this.

The mayor had been told by my guardians to keep quiet about it, but he just laughed apologetically and left when he saw what had happened.

…Truth be told, I don’t want to be worshipped, nor do I want to be here, I just want them to give me a break. I used to be a mere citizen, so this situation was unbearable for me. I wish I could run away right now. But that’s not possible when I had someone’s child in my arms. Ugh……

“I’ve already heard about you, but you’re really beautiful in person. How about you marrying my brother?”

“Stop it. A beautiful girl like her doesn’t belong with that country bumpkin!”

Everyone around me laughed in agreement. When a stranger told me I am beautiful or cute, I was, well, embarrassed. My face was getting hot from the blood rushing to it.

“I mean, just look at the two accompanying her. They’re way above our league. I’m sure she doesn’t have an eye for any of the men in this town.”

“I know right?! A cool-looking beautiful boy and a wild-looking beautiful man, both of them are also strong, isn’t that nice? Hey, by any chance, which one of them are you dating?”

“Uegh!”

I shouldn’t have done that. But I was already in a daze, and the question pointed straight at me was too sudden, so couldn’t help but let out a strange yelp.

“Which one, you ask…?”

““Mhm, mhm…””

The pressure from the surrounding intensified all at once. Everyone’s gaze was drawn toward me with great interest.

Saul-niisama… was out of the question. We’re siblings. But I wondered what the blood relation between my body and his is. I’d like to check it out when I get a chance.

Then how about Reiji-san…?

Imagine myself falling in love with him, confessing my love to him, getting his OK, dating him here and there, making love with him, marrying him. Someday, a new life would be born in this belly, and while patting that growing belly, I would say welcome home to Reiji-san when he returned home from work…

………What?

“………I can’t give an answer.”

After long consideration, I gave a wry smile in response and received a tremendous sigh from everyone around me immediately. Why was everyone looking so dismayed? For some reason, I felt sorry for them.

“What a shame…”

“Maybe when she gets older…”

They started whispering to each other. I’m not even sure what’s going on anymore.

“By the way, which one would you rather be in a relationship with?”

“Saul-sama of course. I want him to smile at me with his handsome face while gently calling out to me!”

“I can see what you mean. But he only smiles like that to this girl.”

“I think I prefer Reiji-sama. Even though he is usually blunt, I think he would be very kind to me if we became lovers.”

They started talking about love. The conversation flowed at a very fast pace, and before I knew it, I was left alone in the flow of the conversation.

Feeling completely neglected and bored, I gazed around the bustling surrounding in a daze. By the way, Saul-niisama was slightly more popular than me, if you ask me.

“… The mothers are all in high spirits, don’t you think?”

“Daah!”

The baby in my arms flapped at the bulge in my modest chest. Oh, come on, my chest wouldn’t grow if it kept being hit like this (sighs).

“I’m sure she’ll get bored and come here soon enough to feed you.”

The baby was a little limp, and I wondered if it’s hungry. Its mother seemed to be engrossed in talking, so I picked it up and tried to comfort it. I heard something about just putting my breast in its mouth to reassure it even if nothing came out.

…That’s not going to happen, okay?

““Hot spring?””

It was not long after noon, when the sun was still high and bright that the mayor of the town, Rudolph-san, who had returned with Reiji-san and Nii-sama, suddenly asked us “Do you like hot spring?”.

“There is a hot spring in this neighborhood. The facilities are adequate for the countryside, and usually the townspeople rarely go there for a hot-spring cure, but I doubt that everyone here is in the mood for that right now. I’ll leave it available for your exclusive use until the evening, how about that?”

It was a proposal that came from a person who wanted to thank us for all the hard work we had done the other day. It’s a very kind offer, to be honest.

“Then Reiji-san and Saul-niisama should go. You must be tired from all the physical work today. Just go ahead without me, okay?”

I put on my perfect princess smile, then gracefully turned on your heel and head back to the house. Yes, I shall take my graceful leave.

“Wait a moment, Iris.”

A hand slipped under my armpit, and in an instant, I was in Nii-sama’s arms, hugging me. The women around us started cheering… Huh?

“Sorry, Nii-sama, even though we are siblings, this is a bit gentlemanly in a public place, don’t you think?”

“Then how about a young girl who runs away because she hates taking a bath?”

“…”

With a bitter face, he whispered to me In such a low voice that no one else could hear.

“… Don’t worry about me. I can use magic to purify myself.”

“That won’t do. Isn’t it time you learn how to take a bath properly?”

“Eeep!?”

Oh no, Nii-sama went straight to the highest tier of the “how to be a girl” class. Even if I tried to escape, I wouldn’t be able to match his physical abilities… I was being locked in a light princess embrace while completely unable to do anything about it. He even used restraint magic on me before I knew it, what a demon!

“Besides, you said you’d do anything for me, right?”

“Have I not told you before how much I hate that whole process, Nii-sama?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Just how much do you want me to take a bath, Saul-niisama?

I turned to Reiji-san, who was right by, for help…

“Ah… Well, if you did say that, I’m going to take your words for it…”

It was no use.

I screamed inwardly as I was being carried away.
